Appearance(s)

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Kris (Japanese: クリス Kris) is Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem's Avatar unit. Kris is the first avatar unit in the Fire Emblem series (however, as New Mystery of the Emblem was never released internationally, Robin was instead the international market's first exposure to the avatar mechanic).

Kris is customized by the player upon start of a new file, and is first playable in Prologue 1 of New Mystery of the Emblem. Kris seeks to serve Marth and Altea.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Creation and customization

The player will get to choose their class, name, and gender. Kris's name is limited to five characters. The available starting classes are cavalier, archer, and mage for either gender. Only males can be mercenaries, knights, and fighters, while only females can be myrmidons and pegasus knights.

The player also gets to customize the appearance of the unit, being able to choose one of twelve hair styles, ten hair colors, and ten eye styles. A few additional styles will be unlocked throughout the game.

Trivia

Kris's unused portrait
  • Kris is one of only two characters to have an item named for them in Awakening—in this case, Kris's Confect, using Kris's default name—who does not themself appear as a SpotPass or DLC character. The other character in this situation is Orsin.
    • However, portraits of the male Kris do feature in the game's data alongside those of the various other SpotPass characters featured in Awakening [1] (albeit without the brown background shared by the other portraits), possibly suggesting that he was planned to be featured, but was dropped for yet unknown reasons.
  • Kris is, thus far, the only avatar to date who does not share any of their default names in any language with a character from Fire Emblem Gaiden.
  • Kris is the only main character in the series to lack a unique or semi-unique class. They are also one of only three main characters to lack a personal weapon, the others being Celica as she appears in Fire Emblem Gaiden and Robin, and one of only two main characters to lack explicit noble or divine heritage, the other being Ike.

Similarly, in gaming it refers to a playable character intended to represent the player, usually in the context of the character being able to be named and customized as the player chooses.
