Oh, I do! You smell so nice and are expert fur brushers! Honestly, all the humans I've met in the outside world have been nothing but kind. But the humans who come directly into our village never are. Our elders taught us long ago that humans who come here will kill us and take our fur! That's why we have to kill anyone who comes here, to protect our own.

Kitsune Lair (Japanese: 妖狐の山 Fox Spirit Mountain) is the nineteenth chapter of the Conquest campaign in Fire Emblem Fates. Plot
- Main article: Kitsune Lair/Script
Leo notifies Corrin of trouble ahead of them, with Xander adding in that their path is blocked by thousands of Hoshidan soldiers and that the Nohrian army doesn't stand a chance if they engage in a battle against them; Azura deduces that Ryoma must have ordered the Hoshidan forces to intercept them upon returning home from Izumo knowing the Nohrians also came from there, prompting Corrin to suggest backtracking and finding another way into the Hoshidan capital. Azura reveals that there is another path the Nohrians could use, with Corrin thinking there's a catch to it; Azura states that there's a path further to the west that the Hoshidans never use and thus no danger of running into their troops, but that mountain is home to the shapeshifting kitsune and there's no guarantee the Nohrians would make it back down the mountain alive if a skirmish were to break out. Azura states that it's risky going through kitsune country but that the Hoshidans would have more time to prepare the more time passes; Corrin states that the group will risk the the trek through kitsune country as they need to end the war quicky in order to expose the truth about Garon, after which Azura states she'll lead the way.
We witness Corrin, Azura, and Elise trekking along a mountain path, with Corrin noting the long trek they've already undertaken and wondering where the kitsune live; Azura reveals that very few people have found the kitsune village and made it back in one piece and that they may have already passed the kitsune village and that the group should remain on guard for the time being. As Corrin suggests picking up the pace, Elise spots a kitsune; the kitsune proceeds to introduce himself as Kaden, the chief of the kitsune village, and notices the group as being Nohrian humans by their smell. Kaden reveals that Nohrian humans tend to help him get home upon losing his way after wandering from the village, prompting Corrin to deduce that the kitsune are friendlier than he/she expected and reveals the rumors about the kitsune and states that he/she is relived that they're just a big misunderstanding; Azura tells Corrin that he/she is wrong, having noticed kitsune warriors surround the group, with Corrin stating that they must have surrounded the group while they were talking with Kaden. Kaden states that he wishes he could have met the Nohrian army elsewhere and reveals his distaste for violence, but reveals that the army has to die for stepping into kitsune territory; Kaden reveals that Nohrians he meets outside the village have been nothing but kind to him, but humans who step directly into the kitsune village are never nice and after kitsune fur, and thus they have to kill invading poachers in order to protect themselves. Corrin states that his/her group just want to pass through the area peacefully, to which Kaden states that he wishes he could trust Corrin but that his job to protect his village comes first and vows to fight. Preparations take place at this point; once preparations are finished, the game will reveal the chapter's gimmick involving kitsune illusions before the battle begins.
Once the battle ends, Corrin feels regret over the result of the battle leaving numerous kitsune dead, but Azura reveals that this had to happen in order to protect themselves and save lives elsewhere; Azura finds herself having to cheer Corrin up before suggesting that they head down the mountain before the Hoshidans catch on to their location.
Summary
After a brief break, Corrin sets out for the Hoshidan capital. Numerous enemies block the way, so the group crosses the mountains, home of the kitsune.

Enemy data
- Note: Enemies with leaf icons on the bottom left of their field sprites are illusions that cannot engage in combat the turn they have the leaf icon; enemies can only engage in combat on turns they do not have leaf icons and are thus not illusions. In the case of the boss, Kaden, his boss icon will alternatingly blink between the boss shield and the illusion leaf icon when he's an illusion. The illusion icons change at the end of player phase.
