I am the heir of Loptyr's kin, and the inheritor of his limitless power. This world belongs rightfully to me.
— Julius

Julius (Japanese: ユリウス Yurius) was the prince of the Grannvale Empire, the son of Emperor Arvis and Deirdre, and the twin brother of Julia. He was the product of the extensive schemes of Manfroy of the Loptyrians, to create a living vessel to reincarnate the Dark God Loptyr by breeding a child bearing full Loptyr Holy Blood from the bloodline's two living minor carriers, Arvis and Deirdre.

Several years prior to the rise of Seliph's liberation army, Julius became subject to Loptyr's corruption upon receiving the evil god's unholy tome. Under Loptyr's influence, Julius successfully wrested control of the empire from his father and twisted it into a brutal regime, reintroduced the child hunts and gave Loptyrian priests positions of power in the Empire. His ultimate goal was for Loptyr to eventually take full possession of him and, by extension, of the Empire, and from there to resurrect the ancient Loptyr Empire.

Biography

Early life

Julius and Julia were born some time after the Battle of Belhalla and the formation of the Grannvale Empire; even before his birth, his late great-grandfather Azmur had great expectations for Julius, as Deirdre's son, to save the Heim bloodline following the death of his grandfather, Kurth. In approximately Grann 770, seven years prior to their eventual reunion,[1] Manfroy came to Belhalla and presented Julius with the Loptyr tome. As soon as he touched it, he was corrupted by the spirit of Loptyr and attempted to kill his Naga-blooded twin; this failed, however, as Deirdre warped Julia away from Grannvale and allowed herself to be killed by Julius instead.

Despite his youth, after taking in Loptyr's spirit, Julius began to undermine Arvis's grip on the Grannvale Empire, rendering his father a mostly powerless figurehead as he began to pervert the empire into the style of the old Loptyr Empire, beginning with entrusting Loptyrian priests with official positions in the Empire's hierarchy.[2] Arvis attempted to resist Julius seizing hold of the empire, even once attempting to outright banish him from Grannvale, but his efforts met with failure and, it is implied, severe consequences.[3] At some point, he became betrothed to Ishtar, a member of the Friege nobility.

The child of darkness

In Grann 776, Julius, Ishtar and Manfroy were paying Veld a visit in Manster, at the same time as Leif's escape from the Manster Castle prison. There, he and Manfroy were conferring with Veld, the Loptyrian bishop in charge of Thracia's north, on the proceedings of the child hunts of the region. The three questioned Ishtar about her family's reluctance to forcibly storm the city of Tahra to begin the hunt there, and when Ishtar raised her family's concerns about the immorality of the hunts, Julius attempted to assauge her concerns before taking her away from the conference to observe the flower garden of the complex's yard.

Around the time that Leif's army began its march on Leonster's eastern gate, Julius came down with a severe fever and was hospitalized in Ishtar's quarters in Conote. Refusing to have him attended by Loptyrian bishops, Ishtar travelled to Leonster to find Saias, to come and help heal Julius. After the fall of Fort Danzich and Leif's army's subsequent escape from being cornered there, Julius and Ishtar arrived, whereupon he expressed his disappointment with the performance of Friege's forces. Rather than letting Ishtar go to Conote to assiste her father, he instead then took her to Miletos at the behest of Hilda, after warning her to not see Reinhardt again on pain of his death.

Rise of Seliph

During Bloom's last stand at Conote, Julius warped in to collect Ishtar and take her back to Belhalla, not wanting to unnecessarily lose her in the Manster District; shortly afterward, in the Thracian conflict, he rescued Areone from death to Seliph's army, swaying his loyalty to the Empire.

Later, at Chronos Castle in Miletos, Julius and Ishtar were present overseeing the child hunt in the region. They departed for Miletos Castle at Hilda's request to prepare to take the captive children back to Belhalla, where Arvis soon arrived, seeking to assist Ishtar in releasing the captive children; Julius fiercely rebuked Arvis for daring to interfere with his control. Manfroy then turned up, bringing news of the captive Julia and how she had recovered her memories of his actions. Despite wanting to have Julia killed, Julius nonetheless allowed Manfroy to proceed with putting her to use. Before leaving for the capital, he and Ishtar decided to play a game: who could kill a member of Seliph's liberation army first, departing after one of the two won or died.

At Velthomer Castle, Julius had an audience with the captive Julia, briefly informing her of what caused the change in him and that she, a bearer of the Naga bloodline, must be killed. At Manfroy's request, Julius allowed her to be brainwashed into serving Manfroy before departing for Belhalla. At the capital, he reluctantly allowed Ishtar to depart for the battle against Seliph's impending forces, where she would meet her doom, convened the newly-recreated Deadlords around Belhalla, and had the order to attack sent to Areone's mercenaries. By this time, Loptyr had concluded his descent into Julius and was revived and in complete possession of him. In spite of his wishes, Julia had been freed from Manfroy's influence and obtained the Naga tome from Velthomer, whereupon she used it to confront him in battle, negating the crippling effect the Loptyr tome had on enemies. Cursing Manfroy's erroneous judgement, Julius engaged her and Seliph's army in direct combat, and was killed; with his dying breath, he (or Loptyr) cursed Naga for interfering with his plans once again and swore to Seliph that, so long as men remained greedy, he would one day return.

Personality and character

Nothing is known of Julius's persona prior to his corruption by Loptyr. Julia implied that before then, Julius was at least a decent child and that the two held a standard good sibling relationship.[4] His persona from then onward appears to be based on his own with his sense of self retained, as Loptyr's possession of him was apparently not complete until shortly before his death,[5] but strongly influenced by the malevolent whims of Loptyr's influence on him. In this state, he was a highly charismatic figure, masking a cold exterior apathetic of the needs of others (except perhaps Ishtar), possessing immense cruelty, favouring abusing those in opposition to or of lesser power than him including his own father, and of having no tolerance for events not proceeding according to his desires.[6] He showed no hesitation in the idea of killing his own sister or mother, reluctant to follow through on Manfroy's plan which required Julia to continue to live and seeing his mother as a nuisance years after her death; here, he may have been spurred on by Loptyr's emnity for Naga, whose major holy blood was borne by both Deirdre and Julia. Julius appeared to have a twisted view of the nature of his actions, seemingly legitimately believing that the misery caused by such endeavours as the child hunts is for the good of all involved and for society as a whole; that, or he had no compunction with effortlessly spinning lies on the matter to persuade the reluctant.[7]

On one hand, he showed a far more human side in his dealings with his fiancée, Ishtar, for whom he seemed to have legitimate feelings and for whom he happily discussed the human trivialties of buying expensive clothing and accessories to attend a party held by her mother.[8] On the other hand, he had absolutely no tolerance for the idea of his relationship with her being even potentially jeopardized, and casually threatened to kill Reinhardt because of his suspicions of his potential interference in Ishtar's relationship with him.

It is implied that in his childhood, Julius had a problem with consistent illness, and that since Loptyr began influencing him the severity and frequency of his illnesses had been steadily increasing.[9]

Julius

As of Fire Emblem Awakening. A name of Roman origin, likely from the Greek ιουλος, "downy-bearded". This name was made famous by Gaius Julius Caesar, an ancient Roman politician, and through him and many of the emperors of the Roman Empire which followed him has a mild association with dictators and empires.[10]

  2. "But obviously he changed his mind. A few years back, as if by magic, the Empire turned into that oppressive force we all know and love today. Even worse... the ancient heretics of the Loptyrian Order have arisen from the shadows once more and raised influence across the land. Their murderous rituals have returned with them, and all across Jugdral they abduct children to sacrifice in droves to resurrect their fell god. All attempts to resist the Empire are crushed and met with brutal executions or enslavement. It couldn't be plainer that they seek to return Jugdral to the days of brutal control by that ancient abomination, the Loptyr Empire." — Lewyn, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  3. "Julius: Why, Father, it almost sounds as if you still don't know any better! Old age must already be dulling that once brilliant mind of yours. Why not retire before it grows still feebler? Unless... Ohoho! Don't tell me you still seriously believe that you can banish me?
Arvis: No... I know better than to try something so futile again... I... I have no further objection.
" — Julius and Arvis, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  4. "Who... No, what are you? That night... The night Manfroy came with that eerie black tome... Nothing was ever the same again. My real brother, the kind and caring boy I once knew and loved so, died that night. In his place stood a demon of terrifying power... My brother in name only." — Julia, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  5. "Everything I've done has led to this moment: the revival of my lord Loptyr. And at long last, it is so! Loptyr's advent in the form of Prince Julius is complete, and darkness shall soon engulf the world. You cannot prevent it. Nobody can..." — Manfroy, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  6. "He... How can I put this... He has this odd charm which draws people to him... only for them to find that he's colder than ice. He's terrifying! If I didn't know better, I would swear he isn't even human..." — Teeny, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  7. "Ishtar, I think there's a misunderstanding. I am not telling them to kill the children. I just want to educate them to be fitting citizens for my empire. Those who withstand the training will earn high posts and rule over the other inferior citizens. In other words, they will become new nobles, Ishtar. I'm giving them a chance to grasp their happiness." — Julius, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  8. "Miletos would be a perfect place to stay. Let's see... Ah, I'll buy you a beautiful silken dress. And...a ruby tiara to go with it. I'm sure Hilda will throw a splendid party for us. And I'm going to show you beautifully dressed up and surprise everyone there. Doesn't that sound wonderful, Ishtar? Ishtar, my love..." — Julius, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
