Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Janaff is one of two main hawk laguz available through midgame and on. Due to his class, he has high mobility and flight (but no canto); he is one of very few flying units that can shove. At base, he is fast enough to double most enemy units but he struggles to one-round enemies due to his average strength and weak beak weapon. He is also restricted to 1-range and has average durability (though a respectable health base), so his enemy phase is weak. His transformation gauge starts at full, so he will be transformed for the first few turns of each chapter then detransform. He can use a demi band to circumvent this after the first few turns, but his already-mediocre attack power will become even worse.

Janaff has excellent growths in skill, and speed, ensuring he will reliably double and land his hits long-term. While his strength growth is good, he is still limited by his weapon type and 1-range, and cannot use forges, so he will remain offensively weak. His defensive growths are mediocre for a laguz unit. Janaff is ultimately outclassed by mounted fliers in almost every way, his only useful niche being his ability to shove while flying.

Janaff has the Insight skill which gives him an innate boost to accuracy. As he already has high skill and luck, this skill is usually overkill but better than nothing. Adept and Wrath complement his good skill and health stats, respectively, and give him a necessary offensive boost. Smite can make him a more useful niche flying shover, though his low weight severely limits his shoving utility. His mastery skill, Cancel, is a useful defensive skill and is one of the better uses of the Occult scrolls, if the player wants to use Janaff long-term.

Janaff has a thunder affinity which gives a useful defense and avoid boost, helping his durability. He can support Oscar and Tanith, both mobile mounted units with earth affinities that complement Janaff's thunder affinity, but they generally have other more useful support options to abuse double earth. Shinon has another thunder affinity, giving a massive +3 defense +15 avoid boost, but Shinon is not a practical character to use and plays a completely different kind of role than Janaff.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Janaff is one of two hawks that joins Ike's group in chapter 3-7 and onward. As a hawk laguz, he has high mobility, flight, and canto, making him a very flexible unit. He is also one of few flying units in the game that can shove. He has excellent offensive stats all around, having more than enough strength, skill, and speed to one-round most enemy units until endgame despite his low base strike rank. His durability is excellent, having amazing avoid due to high speed and luck, with decent health and average defense, but he can be easily killed by crossbows. As a laguz, he lacks 2-range so his enemy phase is limited. As a laguz unit, he has a maintainable laguz gauge, allowing him to face a respectable number of units in combat before depleting to zero. He will generally need laguz stones or olivi grass to remain transformed, though he is more flexible than other laguz classes. Path of Radiance Janaff does not have a realistic chance of capping any stats, so the most benefit he can get from a transfer is a bond support.

Janaff has solid offensive growths for a laguz unit, capping strength and skill on average. His speed growth is low but he is already fast enough to double most units in the game. His experience gain will generally be low as a higher-level laguz; however, improving his strike rank is more significant than actual levels, as he gains +5 attack from each rank up. Ultimately his bases are enough to carry him until endgame, and by then a maxed strike rank turns him into a formidable endgame laguz unit that can compete with the royals, when Laguz Gems are available.

Janaff has the innate Insight skill which gives him very reliable (albeit overkill) hitrates. He is an excellent candidate for a Satori Sign, since he only needs one level to be able to learn Tear. Adept complements Janaff's excellent speed and boosts his offense, though his partner Ulki benefits more due to less attack and more speed.

Janaff has a thunder affinity which gives a light defense and avoid boost. Ulki has the same class and availability as Janaff, and his water affinity provides attack and defense. Other units that provide a defense or avoid boost (especially fliers) will be helpful, including Sigrun and Tanith, as long as Janaff is put on the same part 4 team.

Trivia

  • A bird nursed back to health by Nowi with Stahl's help in Awakening supports was given the name Janaff in homage to this character.
  • There is a typo in one of Janaff’s death quotes, where he asks Ike to look after his son. In the Japanese version “Son” is replaced with “Prince”, so Janaff really meant to tell Ike to look after the prince (Reyson).
