Useless husks! Do you bend the knee to me already? Pah! I've no use for blind obedience. I need you to face me! I was driven off the path to conquest, and only blood will see me returned to it. Only HIS blood!

Irreconcilable Paths is the nineteenth paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. It is one of a group often called the "SpotPass paralogues", as the chapter is unlocked via a SpotPass interaction and also requires beating chapter 25 in order to play. This chapter is unlockable via SpotPass starting May 17, 2012 in the Japanese version, February 28, 2013 in the North American version, and May 16-17, 2013 in the PAL version.
In this chapter, the Shepherds must fight off very strong Risen in a very remote area of Valm. These Risen, however, aren't commanded by one you'd think would be commanding Risen.
Plot
- Main article: Irreconcilable Paths/Script
During a stormy night in an area of northwestern Valm, Chrom notices a whole horde of Risen in the area, to which Lucina tells him to be careful--she feels a darker power than usual emanating from these Risen; these Risen resemble the monsters that drove humanity to the brink of extinction in her original future, to which Chrom says he feels the same--these Risen seem stronger than any the Shepherds have faced before. Lucina states they need not fight this battle, as these Risen are miles from the nearest village and may never threaten anyone; Chrom states that these Risen aren't the only power at work here, there's something else in the area, something strong. Preparations take place at this point; the player can take this opportunity to spot Walhart in the area.
Once preparations are finished, Walhart calls out to the Risen (whom he refers to as "useless husks") and asks if they bend his knee to him already; Walhart has no use for blind obedience, and needs them to face him. Walhart states he was driven off the path to conquest, and only blood will see him returned to it--Chrom's blood. The battle begins at this point.
Should Chrom face Walhart in battle, Chrom will react to Walhart having apparently survived their encounter at Valm Castle, to which Walhart states his heart beats no more but the flame of life within him refuses to gutter out, then states that this is the third and final times their blades will cross. Chrom tells Walhart the war has ended and they have no reason to fight; Walhart says they have every reason to fight, that a conqueror rules by strength alone--defeat is death and he must rise again. Chrom tells Walhart what he just said is utter nonsense, Grima has been reborn and plans to destroy this world--and if Walhart is dead set on battle, then he should join the Shepherds. Walhart notes Chrom's arrogance and claims the world's his, and says he'll suffer no harm from what's mine--from man, dragon, or otherwise. Chrom asks Walhart that they strike down Grima together, to which Walhart says words will not divert his course, only steel; if Chrom would claim him, he should draw his blade and make it so. Chrom says they can fight again, but when he defeats Walhart this time, Walhart will join the Shepherds.
Once the battle ends, should Chrom have faced Walhart on the battlefield, Walhart gives a silent reaction, to which Chrom tells him he gave his word and now he joins the Shepherds; Walhart asks Chrom to know how he defeated him, as he has never lacked for strength. Chrom says Walhart is the stronger of the two, and even now he thinks that's true, but Walhart stands alone--Chrom's own strength is but a fraction of the strength he wields; Chrom's allies hone and temper him, boost his morale and guide his actions. Walhart tells Chrom he treads the path of kings; after a shocked reaction from Chrom, Walhart states Chrom rules by winning hearts while he rules by winning battles--they are opposites. Walhart says he cannot change, as he treads the path of the conqueror and conquerors walk alone, yet he is curious as to see just how far Chrom's kingly path can lead him. If this exchange takes place, the player will be able to control Walhart the next time they take to the battlefield.
Frederick tells Chrom that the wounded have been treated and the horses loaded, and the Shepherds should hurry on; Chrom is thinking about Walhart's "path of the conqueror" words, and after a reaction from Frederick, Chrom says he was thinking out loud. Chrom states he is honestly a bit jealous of Walhart--he stands for strength above all things without regrets or doubts, he's a juggernaut that charges forward and mows down whatever gets in his way; Chrom states he's not like that, his steps are often plagued with question and worry. Frederick tells Chrom that such emotions may be part and parcel of Chrom's path and not obstacles to it, to which Chrom asks what that means. Frederick reveals that Walhart's path is straight but not always true--a juggernaut does not pause to correct trajectory, he merely presses on; by stopping, doubting, and occasionally doubling back, Chrom keeps a truer course--Frederick reveals he could not serve a conqueror, and tells Chrom not to think prudence as a flaw. Chrom thanks Frederick, to which Frederick asks if they should get going as Chrom accepts.
Website summary
The Risen are monsters devoid of souls, seemingly owing allegiance to no one.
There is one place, however, where even the Risen bend their knees to a single man and serve as his loyal soldiers. One man who is master of the Risen…[1]

The chapter's map is 30 columns by 30 rows.
Contrary to some popular belief, which states this chapter (and all of the other SpotPass paralogues) to be part of a free DLC model, this chapter is part of the vanilla Awakening game--it is not considered to be DLC, and should never be confused as being part of any DLC model. This chapter is a full-fledged chapter whose full data, including that for the featured character Walhart, is larger than a SpotPass transmission can accomodate, if not larger than chapters that fall into Awakening's actual DLC model. SpotPass originates no data related to this chapter other than the signal that allows the chapter to be unlocked. Once the chapter is added to the world map, it stays on the world map and can be accessed if the requirements are met even if the SpotPass data related to this chapter is not currently accessible to the game, something that would not be possible were it part of a DLC model.
Character data
Note: The returning characters list only those recruited by the time this chapter is unlocked. As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started. The returning characters list also does not include any characters recruitable in other paralogues, as the player may not have taken on any other available paralogue chapters yet. The list also does not include any bonus units, as they are recruitable at the player's discretion.

Trivia
- This is the only chapter in the vanilla Awakening game that includes generic Risen where the boss isn't a Risen Chief. (A non-Risen boss commanding Risen is the scenario of chapter 22, but the Risen in that chapter aren't generic.)
