Helman has received news of the fight between Zagan and Eliwood. Although Helman agreed to Ephidel's plan, it is clear that Ephidel sent in the bandits with the intention to kill Eliwood. For Helman, this is the last straw. He chastises Ephidel for not being forthcoming with his true intentions and begins to make preparations to receive Eliwood's party and explain everything. Ephidel calmly attempts to dissuade Helman from betraying the Black Fang. When Helman refuses to listen Ephidel announces that he has no use for the Marquess anymore and stabs him, leaving him to bleed out on the floor of his castle. Meanwhile, Eliwood and Hector approach Castle Santaruz only to be stopped by Boies who, with the intention of delaying them from saving Helman, challenges them to make it to the castle alive and summons his underlings.

After Eliwood and Hector defeat Boise, they enter the castle and find Helman on the floor, slowly dying from the wound Ephidel inflicted upon him. In his final moments, Helman apologizes to Eliwood for the trouble he has caused and tells him that Darin, the marquess of Laus, knows all and to beware of the Black Fang. Eliwood and Hector decide to heed Helman's final words and continue on towards Laus to seek answers from its marquess.

Beginning log
Eliwood's tale: "Eliwood enters Santaruz, only to be attacked by a strange group. In a desperate moment, he is rescued by a childhood friend, Marquess Ostia's younger brother, Hector. The assailants' leader reveals that an unknown party seeks Eliwood's head...Eliwood cannot help but think this is related to his father's disappearance. In search of more traces of his father's footsteps, Eliwood sets out for the castle of Lord Helman, the marquess of Santaruz."

Hector's tale: "Hector rescues Eliwood and the two friends are reunited. The paladin Marcus reveals news: Someone has called for Eliwood's death. Pherae's problems must be connected to the attempt on Eliwood's life. Searching for more clues, Hector and friends depart for the castle of Marquess Santaruz."

There are basically two paths you can take: northwest along the snags, or southeast over the bridge. The former is generally easier, and crucially allows you to visit Merlinus's village and unlock the side quest, but if you do not devote resources to the other route, the other village granting a Mine may be destroyed. A final, more dangerous option is to ford the river with Eliwood or Hector, who can even Rescue someone else across to help out. Whichever path you choose, anyone with good bulk should be well-equipped to defeat the boss.

The easiest way to recruit Guy is to take advantage of Matthew's higher movement, and position him just outside of Guy's range on the previous turn. He can avoid entering the nearby enemies' attack ranges if you approach from behind. If you do wish to draw Guy out, Marcus is the obvious choice given his high speed and bulk, but even he will take around half of his max HP in damage if Guy gets a critical hit, which is likely thanks to his Killing Edge, and have a small chance to one-shot Guy in return given his own high Skill stat. Alternatively, you could use the Mine from the nearby village to prevent him from initiating combat, or sacrifice someone you weren't planning to deploy later anyway.

It should be noted that the Armory sells Javelins and Hand Axes. In Hector's tale, you may only have one of each at this point, and at least two maps remain before you can buy more in Chapter 16.

— Boies to Hector and Eliwood

In Search of Truth (Japanese: 真実を求めて Seeking the Truth) is the thirteenth chapter in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. In order to unlock Chapter 13x, the player must visit the northern village in this chapter.

Plot

Main articles: In Search of Truth/Script (Eliwood) and In Search of Truth/Script (Hector)

Helman has received news of the fight between Zagan and Eliwood. Although Helman agreed to Ephidel's plan to dissuade Eliwood, it is clear that Ephidel sent in the bandits with the intention to kill him. Helman announces his intent to receive Eliwood's party and explain everything. Ephidel calmly attempts to discourage Helman from betraying the Black Fang, who refuses to listen; Ephidel announces that he has no use for the marquess anymore and stabs him, leaving him to bleed out. Meanwhile, Eliwood and Hector approach Castle Santaruz, but are stopped by Boies who challenges them to make it to the castle alive and summons his underlings.

After Eliwood and Hector defeat Boies, they enter the castle and find Helman on the floor, dying. In his final moments, Helman apologizes to Eliwood for the trouble he has caused; he tells Eliwood that Darin, the marquess of Laus, knows all, and to beware of the Black Fang. Eliwood and Hector decide to heed Helman's final words and continue on towards Laus to seek answers from its marquess.

Strategy

Augury
This chapter has no augury. Hannah will offer her services beginning in Chapter 14.
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Trivia

Hannah's portrait
 • Hannah, or a character using her portrait, first appears in the southern village of this chapter. She gives the units who visits a mine, one of her new inventions.[1]
