“ | In every battle that mattered in my life, I've always been the one left standing, no matter how slim my chances. This battle means more than any of the others, because it's for the life of every person that I've ever cared about. | ” | — Ike, to Ashera |
---|
Ike (pronounced /aɪk/[key][4]; Japanese: アイク Ike) is the legendary Radiant Hero and leader of the Greil Mercenaries, the son of Greil and Elena and elder brother of Mist. Shortly after joining the Greil Mercenaries, he became the leader after his father's passing and led the group in protecting Crimea's errant Princess Elincia and in combatting the invasion force of Daein, winning the trust and respect of his allies in both laguz and beorc nations. Three years later, after completing a job with Bastian to save Lucia from falling victim to Ludveck's civil war, Ike and the Mercenaries were hired by Gallia's army in their war with Begnion, where he came into conflict with Micaiah of Daein. Ike strives to live up to his father's reputation and become an expert swordsman so that he may one day avenge his father's death by defeating the Black Knight.
Ike serves as the lord character in both Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, though he is not of the "Lord" class by name in the latter. He is the first and only lord character of the Fire Emblem series not of royal blood. Ike is also a regular participate in the Super Smash Bros. series, making his debut appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Role
Ike starts out as a mercenary in his father Greil's mercenary troop. After his father passed away, he travelled with Elincia, the princess of Crimea, to Gallia and eventually Begnion through Nasir's merchant boat. Along the way he is asked by Begnion's Apostle to perform tasks which involve preventing Laguz slave trading. After these tasks, the Apostle gives Elincia and Crimea aid, and it was Elincia who gave the rank of Lord to Ike. Continuing on with their way through Daein and eventually Crimea, Ike confronts the Black Knight several times and then eventually the King of Daein, Ashnard himself and a black Laguz Dragon which was controlled by Ashnard. Defeating Ashnard, Ike was able to help Elincia restore Crimea to its former glory.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Ike is a Lord that has weak base stats but has excellent growths across most stats, so he will usually grow into a powerful unit. Training him may seem unnecessary due to lack of a mount and sword-lock (only 1-range), but it is often advised due to his necessity to fight Ashnard at the end of the game.
His weak earlygame is somewhat remedied by his decent base speed and his Regal Sword (mitigated by only ×2 effectiveness bonus). Through midgame, his growths will often have begun to kick in, and forges / other effective weapons have become more readily available. However, he is also prone to stat screwage at this point due to his low bases. After promotion, Ike is a force to be reckoned with and will on average cap strength, speed, and skill at max level. Although Ragnell is only available for the last two chapters, it gives him a powerful 1-2 range option and a massive defensive boost, making him one of the most powerful endgame characters.
Due to the power of Aether, Ike is a prime candidate for an Occult Scroll. Wrath + Resolve is another powerful combination, since it allows him to kill Ashnard quickly and trivializes the last two chapters with Ragnell. Aether or Wrath alone are almost mandatory if the player chooses to take on the Black Knight.
Ike also has an Earth affinity, which is arguably the best affinity due to a +5 avoid boost per support level. In particular, Oscar makes a strong support partner with his own earth affinity and availability, giving both units an impressive +30 avoid at max support.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Role
In Radiant Dawn, Ike returns as the leader of the Greil Mercenaries and has gained respect from most of the nations in Tellius thanks to his role in the Mad King's War three years before. He is first hired by Bastian to rescue Lucia when she is about to be hanged at the end of part 2. Afterwards, Elincia meets with him privately and explains that Daein now has a new king and that Bastian compared him to Elincia and a girl called the Silver-Haired Maiden to Ike. She also reveals that the Black Knight was seen there. Ike is shocked to hear this and returns to the Greil Mercenaries fort; he initially decides to look for the Black Knight.
Ike then abandons his search when Ranulf hires the mercenaries to aid the Laguz Alliance against Begnion in Part 3. When the plot forged by the Begnion senators is discovered, Sanaki makes Ike the supreme commander of the combined armies of Crimea, Begnion, Gallia, and Phoenicis, who had just forged a new alliance. Ike also leads the Greil Army in Part 4 and is the only one who can deliver the final blow to Ashera at the end of the game.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Ike is considered one of the best combat units in the game, with excellent base stats, solid availability, and earth affinity. He starts with the powerful 1-range Ettard, then gets the even better 1-2 range Ragnell for the latter half of his availability. He is held back by lack of mount, very bad resistance, and low speed growth (only an issue after promotion). It is worth noting that after he caps skill (common in early Part 3), it is better on average to level him with bonus experience, because his average stat gains per level becomes less than 3. Because he is required to deal the final blow to Ashera, and also defeat the Black Knight, it is always recommended to use and train Ike. Radiant Dawn Ike benefits significantly from Path of Radiance transfers, as PoR Ike has better balanced growths that help him frequently cap several stats at level 20.
Ike promotes at the start of part 4, which gives him axes (only useful for Hammer on generals and Black Knight), Aether (a mastery skill that heals), and Nihil (still costs 20 skill capacity). Because part 4 has many rout chapters, Ike becomes a very useful unit with the Ragnell despite starting under-leveled. Ike may struggle in endgame because of the abundance of enemy magic users and his bad resistance, but there are several tools to mitigate this (Ward staves, Pure Waters, wardwood tiles).
Ike has an earth affinity, which is arguably the best affinity in the game, giving +22.5% avoid at max. Oscar makes an excellent partner for Ike with his own earth affinity and perfectly shared availability with Ike. Tanith is another solid earth partner due to being a flier, though she joins significantly later than Oscar. Mia and Boyd are other good partners with fire affinities, giving a useful attack and accuracy boost. Rafiel's Heaven affinity is a useful lategame partner to help Ike's hitrates because of their shared part 4 chapters, Ike's extreme biorhythm cycles, and his inconsistent accuracy on Ashera and her auras.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Two versions of Ike are playable in Awakening: a free one through SpotPass as part of the Path of Radiance character set, and a paid one from the DLC chapter package Rogues & Redeemers 3.
Ike also appears as an enemy in six DLC chapters, including his role as the boss of Champions of Yore 3 and Rogues & Redeemers 3, and as a neutral unit in Champions of Yore 1 and Smash Brethren 2.
Additionally, Ike's title, reputation and the Ragnell have been inherited by his distant descendant Priam, who allies with Chrom.

Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
There are four different variations of Ike available to Heroes, three of which are tied to his storyline appearance in Path of Radiance and one of which is tied to his storyline appearance in Radiant Dawn. In the case of the Path of Radiance-based variations, the normal variation of Ike is one of the characters added to the game in the World of Radiance update, and became available for summoning by players on April 26, 2017, while a brave variation of Ike was made available on August 31, 2017 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Brave Heroes update, and a Valentine's variation of Ike was made available between February 8, 2019 and March 8, 2019 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Greil's Devoted update. A variation of Ike termed "Vanguard Legend", based on his Radiant Dawn incarnation, was first made available to players on January 31, 2018 as the game's third Legendary Hero, and the first one not to be a character original to Heroes.
The brave variation of Ike is notably the first character whose data was not present in the game at launch to be the first bearer of two passive skills of the same type; in this case, he is the first bearer of the type-A skills Steady Stance and Steady Breath. The same variation of Ike is also the first non-launch-day character to be the first bearer of three different types of passive skills, also being the first bearer of Beorc's Blessing.

Personality and character
Throughout his games, Ike is shown to be a blunt, yet passionate person, earning others' respect and trust easily. This is especially evident with Reyson, who begins to trust Ike in Path of Radiance after he had hated all beorc so badly for so long. Ike is also one of the few beorc who do not hold predjudice against the laguz and shares Elincia's desire to bring peace between the two races.
Ike also, for a while, hates all nobles and their lifestyle. This changes somewhat after he gets to know nobles, such as Elincia, Sigrun, Geoffrey, Lucia, and others. He reluctantly accepts Elincia's promoting him to a lord as well, even though he is quite uncomfortable over it.[5] Ike also seems to not think before he acts at times, as shown when he shouts at Sanaki in the Begnion Palace.[6] Mist also says that he is reckless.[7] Several times in Path of Radiance, Ike also doubts his own abilities as a leader, but his allies believe otherwise.
Another notable thing about Ike's character is his love for food. Soren, Oscar, Titania, and Lethe all hint that he eats a lot, probably as much as the laguz,[8] who are said to eat much more than the beorc, and Oscar and Soren say Ike particularly favors spicy meat dishes, mainly ribs and steaks.
Also, it's easy to tell when Ike is tired. His left eye twitches when he's feeling beat according to Soren.

Ike/Super Smash Bros. series
Ike is a recurring playable character in Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. fighting game series. He first joined the series in Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii. He appears in both of the following installments, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as well. Ike uses his Path of Radiance design in Brawl, his Radiant Dawn design in 3DS/Wii U, and both designs in Ultimate (with Path of Radiance as the default).
Ike's fighting style in the Super Smash Bros. series has him move slowly on the ground but deal heavy, far-reaching blows with Ragnell. However, like his movement speed, his attacks are slow.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.
Ike features as a bonus playable character in the Nintendo 3DS title Code Name: S.T.E.A.M..[9] His appearance is triggered by using an amiibo during preparation for a chapter. As is standard for the Fire Emblem series, but atypical of characters in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., Ike cannot be brought back into a battle after being defeated; instead, the player must use his amiibo again in order to use him again.
As in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Ike appears in this game in his Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn Hero attire, and is once again voiced by Michihiko Hagi and Jason Adkins in Japanese and English respectively. His two weapons are Ragnell and Urvan, the former allowing him to attack enemies over an impressive by throwing shockwaves, and the latter dealing heavy damage to multiple enemies and objects in close proximity to him.

Trivia
- In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Ike is wearing the attire worn as a Ranger, and he wields Ragnell. However, in Path of Radiance itself, Ike does not use Ragnell until after his promotion to Lord, though he came into possession of it long before then. This is rectified in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, where his design is now derived from his Hero incarnation in Radiant Dawn, in which he actually does use Ragnell.
- Roy, the protagonist of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, was originally going to be named Ike.
- Ike was known by the name "Paris" in early images of Path of Radiance.
- Priam's Japanese name, Paris, appears to be in refrence to this.
- Greg Chun, Ike's English voice actor in Heroes, also voices Lukas, Eldigan, and Ephraim in the same title as well as Lukas in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.[10]
- There is a bug in the North American version of Path of Radiance that causes Ike to have four Iron Swords in Chapter 1 if the Visit tutorial is skipped. This was not present in the Japanese version, and was fixed for the PAL release.

Ike |
Diminuitive form of "Isaac", itself from the Hebrew יִצְחָק Yitzchaq, "he laughs".[11] A name of Biblical origin, Isaac was the son of Abraham, whom God nearly forced Abraham to kill as a test of faith.[12] The most famous bearer of the short form was US President Dwight Eisenhower, commonly known by the nickname Ike.[13] |

- ↑ "Elincia: I'm...sorry about this. If you're absolutely opposed to it, I won't force you.
Ike: No, I have to do what's necessary. So what am I supposed to do now? Put on a funny hat or something?" — Ike and Elincia, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "Elincia's homeland is lost to her! Her family has been hunted down and killed by the monsters of Daein! And with nowhere else to turn, she endures mortal danger and terrible heartbreak to reach your door. And then you...you laugh at her?! Where is the humor in that? Where is your decency? You're horrible! You are all horrid people! You disgust me beyond words! And you owe Elincia a proper apology." — Ike, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
- ↑ "Mist: He means that for once, your recklessness actually got us OUT of trouble!
Ike: What's that supposed to mean?" — Ike and Mist, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑ "Lethe: On top of that, we have General Skrimir and Ike. ...Yeah, I'd be surprised if what's here lasted past those two, much less a whole pack of laguz.
Titania: Tsk! You're exaggerating! Ike is a beorc. He couldn't possibly eat as much as someone from the beast tribe. Well, maybe he would. Actually... He most definitely would.
