“ | I've seen so many kids lose the ability to laugh thanks to this war. Grown-ups have a lot of issues, but come on, kids have to laugh. Even if the idiots who start these wars don't think so. | ” | — Hugh to Chad in a support conversation. |

Hugh (Japanese: ヒュウ Hugh) is a character in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He first appears in Chapter 16. Hugh is a streetwise young mage from Ilia, who sought out as a mercenary to earn some money. He is the son of Canas and the grandson of Niime.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
Hailing from Ilia, Hugh was hired as a mercenary to fight for the Etrurian forces. However, Hugh becomes deeply concerned when many defectors of the army, such as Roartz and Arcardo, left the army for Bern, since he feels that he will not get his pay. As a result, in the battle against Narcian, he goes to Roy to have him recruit him. However, in order to do so, the player must pay him 10,000 gold, since he claims that he needs medicine for his sick grandmother.[2] If you decline that offer, then he will offer to join Roy's forces again, but this time with 5,000 gold. However, if the player refuses again, Hugh will not join the army.
After the war, many nations attempt to hire Hugh, but he ends up turning down all of their offers, and continued onward with his own life. It turns out that he was really a pain when it came to earning money, but he eventually becomes a great and very powerful mage.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Hugh joins in chapter 16 as a level 15 mage, with average bases. He can be promoted immediately to gain access to huge promotion gains and become a valuable asset to your team.
Unfortunately, Hugh suffers from some significant flaws: while the monetary cost is not so much of a problem (The Binding Blade being pretty generous with it) you may wish to purchase Angelic Robes and promotion items at the secret shop at the end of his recruitment chapter. Recruiting him can also prove tricky; he comes from the right side of the map, followed closely by Douglas himself, who you must not kill if you want access to the gaiden chapter. Moreover, an annoying bolting mage may threaten Roy's life if you wish to recruit Hugh.
Another problem he faces is stiff competition with Lugh and Lilina, who may be already better than a prepromoted Hugh, and you only have so many Guiding Rings and deployment slots.
However, none of his flaws render him totally unusable. As said already, his bases are average, and his growths are all solid. A 15/1 promoted Hugh has noticeable advantages in HP, Magic, and Defense over 15/1 Lugh on average. His C anima rank allows him immediate access to Aircalibur after promotion or with a little work, and his high magic after promotion makes him a good staff bot.
Hugh doesn't fall off in the late-game, as his Speed growth rate is pretty reliable, and his high Magic, HP and Defense make him quite the dependable unit.
Personality and character
Hugh, as stated by his ending, is quite a pain when it comes down to money and getting paid for what he does. When Roy hires Hugh, he must pay either 10,000 gold or 5,000 gold in order to recruit him, otherwise he will not join the army. He also can tend to be quite avaricious with his pay, since when Chad, an orphan, asks him for a loan of 3,000 gold, Hugh at first refuses, saying that he is only willing to lend money to adults and to good-looking women and girls, as shown in his C support with him. Hugh is also shown to be somewhat gullible and juvenile; when he meets Raigh, a shaman, he lends him his grandmother's Nosferatu tome, but he does not give it back.[3] When they finally meet again, Hugh tries to get it back from him, but he continues to be fooled by his excuses[4], such as when Raigh claims that he would give it back after he uses it 20 times, which is the exact limit of uses of the tome before it is done.[5] His susceptible personality is also shown when he is fooled by the thief Cath and has some of his money taken from him, although he ironically wanted to give it to her in the first place, as she was planning on giving it to the poor.[6] Hugh also shows a few hints of some arrogance and narcissism, since he theorizes that Niime has not attacked him with her dark magic yet, due to his handsome appearance[7], or when he gets angry at Chad for calling him an 'old man,' as this, to him, does not do with his looks, much to Chad's amusement.[8]
When Hugh was still a child, and his father and mother both died protecting Ilia from a snowstorm, he was left in the care of Niime. However, during that time, she treated him severely, such as how she would never heal him if he was ever heard, as revealed in his support conversation with Lugh, where he even goes as far as to calling her a "kook."[9] On top of that, she had tried to get him to practice dark magic, but due to lack of progress, Hugh decided to move on to wielding anima magic[10], much to his grandmother's chagrin.[11] However, this harsh treatment causes Hugh to hold a grudge against her, and he leaves as a mercenary to make some money.
However, despite his somewhat avaricious and naive personality, Hugh is shown to truly be a very kind person at heart, as described by Niime.[12] This is shown when Hugh tries to give Cath the money he earned from joining Roy's army, knowing that she would give it to the poor, or when he gives his Nosferatu tome to Raigh out of sympathy when he found out he was an orphan, although it turns out Raigh steals it later on. He becomes very good friends with Lugh, even though Hugh thought he was his twin brother, Raigh, who he grew to not like very much.[13] Hugh states that Lugh is one of his best friends after he had treated a wound that he received on his elbow, even though it was apparently not that serious. He reveals to Lugh that he is the first person to ever truly care for his well being, and they become great friends.[14] He also turns out to be friends with Chad as well, and comes to respect him, too, since he sees him as a more mature person than he is himself.[15]

Canas: He will be two this year." — Nino and Canas in a support conversation, which takes place 20 years before The Binding Blade, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade - ↑ "Roy: If your grandmother's sick, then I suppose it's a worthy cause for the money...
Hugh: You betcha! She's so sick you don't even know. She always gets these headaches on her back...
Roy: Huh? Headaches on her back?
Hugh: Uh, y-you know what I mean. That's just one of her many symptoms, each worse than the last... ...OK, all the money seems to be here. You won't regret this. I know what I'm doing!
Roy: ......" — Chapter 16, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Niime: Hugh, those tomes are hard to find! I sincerely hope you didn't pawn it...
Hugh: Wait! No, no, no! I didn't sell it! I gave it away!
Niime: What?! And that's any better?
Hugh: No, but listen! I met this kid who was studying dark magic, and I traveled with him for a while. The kid was an orphan, so I felt kinda bad for him, I guess. Anyway, one morning when I woke up, the kid was gone, and so was the tome!
Niime: So you didn't give it away. A child stole it from you.
Hugh: I suppose that's one way of putting it.
Niime: That's the only way of putting it!" — Hugh and Niime's B support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Raigh: ...Heh, what an idiot. So gullible. I can’t even comprehend such bumbling foolery." — Raigh and Hugh's B support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Raigh: Let’s see... I suppose I could give it back after I use it 20 times.
Hugh: You better keep your word!
Raigh: Of course.
Hugh: ...Oh well, I guess I just gotta be patient... Hey, wait a minute! It’ll be all used up after 20 times!" — Hugh and Raigh's B support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Hugh: Then...are you going to give my money to the poor as well?
Cath: Of course.
Hugh: ...... Then hey... You can have maybe a hundred... No... I can give you around half of this money...
Cath: ...No. I'm the Master Thief. I have my dignity. I don't take charity.
Hugh: Look, I'm giving it to you. Just take it!
Cath: I said no. I don't want it. Besides... I've already got your money.
Hugh: What?! Wh...what the heck?! When did you switch my...? Cath! Wait! Just wait a minute, please!" — Cath and Hugh's A support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Hugh: ...I thought I was a dead man for sure. Either she's gotten soft with age, or she was dumbfounded at how handsome I've become. Either way, lucky me!" — Hugh and Niime's C support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
- ↑ "Chad: ...Are you really a mage, old man? You seem more like some kind of jester or something.
Hugh: O-old man?! Does this handsome face look like it belongs to an "old man"?!
Chad: Yeah. Well, compared to mine, anyway.
Hugh: Ugh! Daggers through my heart! ...I take personal offense to "old man". Seriously, you can call me anything. Smelly, messy, stupid, anything. Just don't call me "old man"! I feel like my soul has died a little after hearing that!" — Chad and Hugh's A support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Hugh: My grandmother raised me, but she's a real kook. She's given me injuries way worse than this one, but she never once used her staves to heal me!" — Hugh and Lugh's A support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
- ↑ "Hugh: Was my old man good at dark magic? I don't really remember.
Niime: ...Why?
Hugh: Well, I really did try to study dark magic, but I couldn't seem to pick it up at all. That kid I told you about was doing great, though. I thought that maybe I don't have the talent, so I switched to anima magic. " — Hugh and Niime's A support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Niime: Harumph! If I dropped dead who would keep my pathetically helpless grandson in line? So tell me. It was three years ago I sent you out to study the darkness. I hope you have a good excuse for using that putrid anima magic.
Hugh: Actually, I became a mage.
Niime: ...I must finally be going deaf. I thought I heard you say you became a mage.
Hugh: Oh, sorry, I'll say it so you can hear. I! USE! ANIMA! MAGIC! NOW!
Niime: You...you blundering failure! You dare show your face in front of me?!" — Chapter 16, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Niime: He's just like his father was at that age... He tries to be bad, but his heart is too kind. Why couldn't he inherit his talent for dark magic as well?" — Niime and Hugh's B support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
- ↑ "Hugh: Oh... H-hey. You're Lugh, right? I, uh, I'm sorry I mistook you for your brother the other day...
Lugh: No, Hugh, it's all right. We're twins, so no one can really tell us apart anyway.
Hugh: Oh man, I'm really sorry, though. I can't believe I just lost it and grabbed you by the collar like that. I'm a terrible person." — Lugh and Hugh's C support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Hugh: ...I was embarrassed, that's all.
Lugh: What? Why?
Hugh: Because... No one ever cared for me that much my whole life... My grandmother raised me, but she's a real kook. She's given me injuries way worse than this one, but she never once used her staves to heal me! I was just happy to have someone concerned about me for a change... Thanks, man. You're my new best friend.
Lugh: Of course, Hugh! Let's be friends forever!!" — Hugh and Lugh's A support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ "Chad: I used the money to buy a strong sword. I'm going to use it to end this war quickly. Then I can go back to the children!
Hugh: So the kids are family to you. You want to protect them.
Chad: That's right. I've got nothing else. You got a problem with that?
Hugh: Not at all... I'm sorry I was so rude with you before. You've already grown up, Chad. You're certainly more of an adult than I am." — Chad and Hugh's B support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - ↑ Hugh - Name Meaning, What does Hugh mean?, www.thinkbabynames.com, Retrieved: 10 November 2018
