Hit point

From Fire Emblem Wiki, your source on Fire Emblem information. By fans, for fans.

HP or hit points (Japanese: HP) is a stat that determines how much damage a unit can take. Some units on average have more health than others, such as knights. Weapons like Nosferatu and Runeswords can take HP from an opponent and give it back to the wielder.

Eirika attacking an enemy Gargoyle in The Sacred Stones. The Gargoyle currently has its maximum HP, which is 25, and it will decrease by 51 due to Eirika's attack, enough to instantly kill it.

Maximum HP (Japanese: 最大HP Maximum HP) is the maximum amount of HP that a unit can have at once. It can be increased by Leveling up or using a Seraph Robe or similar item.

Overview

In most games, if all hit points are gone, the unit will then die, and not return to battle. If a main or special character has run out of hit points, it will result in a "Game Over." In other games that have Casual Mode, units return on the next map, however the defeat of main or important characters still triggers a Game Over.

Restoring HP

Items such as vulneraries and elixirs can restore health, while many staves also restore health. Units that are standing on certain structures (such as fortresses and gates) recover a small amount of health at the start of their turn.

Casting spells with HP

In two Fire Emblem series games, Fire Emblem Gaiden and its remake Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, mages and other magic-using classes use their HP to cast black magic and white magic. More powerful spells cost more HP to cast and mages become unable to use most spells when their HP is low.

Multiple health bars

In Fire Emblem: Three Houses, monster units have multiple HP reserves, or health bars; most monsters have 2, but stronger ones may have 3 or 4. If a monster unit runs out of hit points, then instead of dying, the unit will move on to their next HP reserve; monster units will only die once all of their HP reserves have run out of hit points. A new HP reserve will always start at its maximum value, and excess or overkill damage from a previous HP reserve will not carry over into a new one. Depleting single enemy HP reserve will award as much experience as defeating the enemy normally would.

HP reserves can also have varying amounts of hit points per reserve. Typically, the second reserve will have as much as the first, and if the unit has even more than just two reserves, then the third will have roughly 1.5× as much as the first, and the fourth will have roughly double the first reserve's amount of HP.

Units possessing multiple health bars return in Engage as Revival Stones (Japanese: 復活の石 Resurrection Stones). In this game, they can be held by non-monster enemies, typically bosses. Unlike in Three Houses, the amount of HP in each health bar is exactly the same as the unit's first. Both red and purple variants exist. If a unit's revival stones are colored red, they merely function normally. If they are colored purple, however, it indicates that some event will activate upon that unit losing a revival stone from damage; for most bosses, this triggers an event that grants them additional engage weapons or skills. A single Revival Stone can also be given to a player unit using Emblem Tiki's special Divine Blessing skill.
