Appearance(s)

Few folk livin' today are as vile as that Queen Hilda of Chronos. She's real cozy with them dark cultists. She goes 'round stealin' kids, then if they so much as cry, she kills the mams so calm-like, you'd think she was just swattin' flies! There's no way that woman's human! It's a fiend that's rulin' us now...
— A Miletos villager

Hilda (Japanese: ヒルダ Hilda) was the wife of Duke Bloom of Friege, a relative of the Velthomer nobility of Grannvale, and the mother of Ishtar and Ishtore. She was responsible for the relentless abuse of Tailtiu/Ethnia while in Bloom's captivity, resulting in her death, and as the appointed Queen of Miletos in the Grannvale occupation of the region, personally participated in the Loptrian child hunts in the country.

Biography

At some point during the era of the Grannvale Empire, Hilda married Bloom of House Freege. When Bloom abducted Tailtiu/Ethnia and her daughter Teeny/Linda from their hiding in Silesse and imprisoned them, Hilda took to viciously abusing the two, both physically and verbally, for years on end until her actions ultimately caused Tailtiu/Ethnia's death.[1]

With the occupied Miletos territory placed under the rule of House Friege, Hilda was appointed the "Queen of Miletos" while Bloom governed the Munster District. Ruling Miletos from Chronos Castle, she was a prominent architect of the massacres and child abductions in the region, until the arrival of Seliph's liberation army in Miletos. She was defeated at Chronos, but survived the battle and retreated to Grannvale. At Grannvale, in the final confrontation with Seliph's army, Hilda was entrusted with the defense of Friege Castle, the last obstacle between Seliph and Julius himself at Belhalla, and died in the battle.

Role

Hilda is the first boss of Chapter 10, fought at Chronos Castle. While she is the first the player will pass, she can be ignored for a while and the player can go fight Morrigan at Rados Castle instead if they choose, but both must be defeated and seized to progress to Miletos Castle.

Hilda later re-appears as the third boss of the Endgame, fighting outside Friege Castle with the Gelb Ritter.

Personality and character

Hilda was violent and bloodthirsty, delighting in the suffering of the people of Miletos under the rule of Grannvale and the Loptrians, regularly participating in the massacres herself, and considering the murders of escaped children to be a perfectly normal "lesson" to the people of Miletos.[2] In particular, she had an intense hatred for Tailtiu/Ethnia as a result of their status as traitors to Grannvale;[1] while she freely and gleefully admitted to her abuse of Tailtiu/Ethnia, she nonetheless claimed that they were "ungrateful" toward her, as if she expected gratitude from them for her actions.[3] She appeared to have an interest in her family scaling the social order, as evidenced by her insistence on Ishtar's pursuit of her relationship with Julius.[4] At the same time as her heinous deeds, she nonetheless claimed that the demise of Ishtore and Bloom at the hands of Seliph's army was itself a vicious crime on Seliph's part worthy of eternal emnity from House Friege.[5]

Quotes

Battle quotes

My father, my husband, and my son... Know their vengeance!
— Hilda, in Chapter 10 of Genealogy of the Holy War.
Hilda: Ohoho! Well, if it isn't Teeny/Linda. I knew you'd come crawling back to me. You really are every bit the ingrate you dear mama was!
Teeny/Linda: Hilda! You... What did you do to Mother...
Hilda: Ahh, that takes me back! It's been so long since I had as much fun as tormenting that eyesore you call "mama"... Ahahaha!
Teeny/Linda: No! You... I won't forgive you...
Hilda: Why, if I didn't know better, that's the smart mouth of someone all grown up! What could a brat like you ever hope to do? Good thing you miss your mama. You're about to go join her in hell!

— Hilda, when fighting Teeny/Linda, in Chapter 10 of Genealogy of the Holy War.
Hmph... I won't fall anywhere near as easily as those other worms!
— Hilda, in the Endgame of Genealogy of the Holy War.
Hilda: Ohoho! So you toddled all the way here, Teeny/Linda. I've been waiting for you. I want nothing more than to choke the life from you with my bare hands!
Teeny/Linda: You won't get that chance! I pray you're watching, Mother... I'm finally going to kill Hilda!

— Hilda, when fighting Teeny/Linda, in the Endgame of Genealogy of the Holy War.
Hilda: Ohohohoho... You're Tailtiu's other brat, aren't you? Am I to presume you've come to seek my head for your mommy's pathetic demise?
Arthur: Oh, yeah. I figured that Teeny/Linda shouldn't dirty her hands this time around...
Hilda: Oh, did you, now? In that case, I'll drag you straight to hell with me!

— Hilda, when fighting Arthur, in the Endgame of Genealogy of the Holy War.

Trivia

  • In her Endgame appearance, Hilda erroneously has major Dáinn Holy Blood, instead of her actual minor Fjalar blood. The "Project Naga" fan translation corrects this error.
  • Hilda shares her name with a character from Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
  • Hilda mentions her father in her battle quote. This possibly refers to her father-in-law Reptor, who was killed by Sigurd's army, rather than her own father, as her father is not a character in the game.

Lewyn: What, did she treat you bad or something?
Teeny: Yeah. She always used to beat me and call me names, and she said my mother a traitor.
    Lewyn: That would've been Tailtiu...
Teeny: Yes. She and Arthur escaped to Silesse after the Battle of Belhalla. Then she had me. But I was told my father passed away...
Lewyn: Is that right... So you came to the Alster Kingdom after all that?
Teeny: Well, we didn't go there willingly. We were taken by force by King Bloom's men. And then that's where my mother died.
Lewyn: You sure haven't had it easy, have you...
Teeny: Yeah... Anyway, Hilda really had it in for my mum. My mum put up with so much to keep me safe. A day didn't go by that she wasn't crying...
