Hidden Truths 1 is a downloadable content xenologue chapter in Fire Emblem Fates. As a xenologue chapter, it does not officially bear a chapter number; if all xenologues are purchased and its list is viewed at the Dragon's Gate, Hidden Truths 1 is the seventh one from the top in the North American version of the game. Hidden Truths 1 is part of the first series of DLC releases in all regions.

This chapter was first made available on August 20, 2015 in Japan, March 24, 2016 in North America, and June 16-17 in the PAL regions. This chapter is sold together with Hidden Truths 2 in all regions.

This chapter serves as a postscript chapter to the game's predecessor, Fire Emblem Awakening, and the first part of a two-part saga bridging together the stories of Awakening and Fates. In it, three popular children characters from Awakening are tasked by Anankos to fend off invaders following him with the promise of saving their original future, while at the same time being judged by Anankos to be proven worthy of protecting his realm and granting them new power.

Plot

Main article: Hidden Truths 1/Script

At the Mila Tree in Valm, Anankos asks Owain, Inigo, and Severa if they are ready for something he is about to do; all three of them, still offscreen, confirm they are, to which Anankos says he's ready to begin, followed by a roar. A flash of light is seen; Severa asks what had just happened and why he had changed the color of her hair, Owain noticing his Brand is gone, and Inigo noticing Anankos has some powerful magic up his sleeves. Anankos states he thought it wise to alter their appearances before they departed for their destination, any characteristics that could hint at their true lineages must be kept hidden, and the least he could do is lessen the burden the three shall endure on his task; Severa states she liked the color of her hair, to which Inigo tells her not worry, her new hair color is rather fetching on her, with Owain noticing Inigo is still as much a flirt as he ever was, guessing that trait is something not even Anankos could change--Inigo's consistency is one thing the previous war didn't affect. Anankos states that, now that he has altered their appearances, they'll need new clothes and powers, and the last step will be to create new names for each of them; Owain states he thinks Anankos is joking about the new names, to which Anankos states he's not joking--abandoning their real names is a necessary precaution. Owain deduces that they must hide their true identities in case the worst happens, then notices he could get used to living as a shadowy warrior of darkness living under a false identity; Inigo asks Anankos that, since he's changing their names and appearances, that means he's asking a task out of them that is incredibly difficult and dangerous, to which Anankos confirms--he needs the three of them to travel to another place and time to fight for him, to a world where fates intertwine, a world of choices and consequences. Anankos states he truly hopes the fates are kind to them on the other side--if they are not, death awaits them all; after a reaction from Inigo, Severa states that they've finally achieved peace in this world, and she can't go dying before she's had time to enjoy it, to which Owain adds that dark missions are his specialty but still shows reluctance to risking his life again. Anankos states that he cannot say their reluctance was unexpected and reveals he's not forcing any of them to go and they have every right to refuse his request; Inigo asks who said anything about refusing, with Severa stating she never said she wouldn't go but finding the prospect shameful, with Owain adding his doubts that there's much reward in this task but he will still lend his unholy strength to the task. After a puzzled reaction from Anankos, Severa states that they may be young, yet they have tons of experience on the battlefield and they've been through a lot and can tell when someone needs their help; Inigo states it's not in their nature to refuse someone's need for help--the stakes may be high, but they want to help in any way they can, and even if it turns out to be a lie, they're choosing to believe in Anankos, to which Anankos thanks them. Severa reveals that Anankos looked suspicious when they first met, with his face covered--she states she never thought someone like him could come calling for them at the castle walls; Owain adds that the first words out of Anankos's mouth were a request to save his kingdom, and that got their attention even though he couldn't reveal more--Inigo adds that the most they could get out of Anankos was when and where to meet, being asked to follow a map and meeting on the night of the next full moon, adding that the request was mysterious and wonders how they could refuse. Anankos apologizes for keeping them in the dark, to which Severa states she's not worried but adds there's one thing she still doesn't understand--why they had to travel from the Ylissean continent over to the Valmese continent to get more info; Severa states that Anankos surely would realize most people wouldn't be able to manage it; Anankos again apologizes but notes that all three of them made it, to which Owain states that being heroes is their birthright, or maybe they crave the thrill of conquest or the seduction of revelation. Owain states that the situation is that they can't bear to abandon someone in need, but tells Anankos to be prepared to face the consequences if they find out he's taking advantage of their heroic nature; Anankos states he has no intention of deceiving them or taking advantage of their generosity--heroes who defeated the fell dragon Grima deserve far better, leaving Inigo to wonder how Anankos knew of those events as he doesn't recall telling him about them. Anankos again apologizes and states it pains him to involve them in another war, knowing they come from a desolate future; Inigo again is left wondering how he knew this information, then asks Anankos just who he is. After an awkward exchange between Severa and Anankos, he asks her to get down; as Anankos blocks an attack, a shadowy figure appears, to which Severa asks who he is, with Anankos expressing disbelief at the situation, that someone must have caught wind of his plans.

We cut to a view of the stage, infested with invaders, to which Owain asks what the invaders are, wondering if they're zombies or Risen; Inigo states that he doesn't think they're what Owain thinks they are--they can sense these enemies but can't see them, yet the enemies clearly intend to kill them and asks why, to which Anankos states that it's his fault they're here. Inigo asks Anankos what he means, to which Anankos asks the three of them to listen carefully: these warriors are from another world, they followed him here. Anankos states he didn't want to affect this world any more than necessary; Severa cuts him off, and asks what kind of world Anankos lives in with those beings around, to which Anankos states he can't tell them yet. Owain states that even if Anankos could tell them, they don't have the time--they need to defend themselves; he doesn't care who the invaders are, they can't let them harm their world. Inigo tells Anankos that Owain's right, they can discuss things over a nice cup of tea later, and they've already told him they believe his plight; Severa asks if they can start fighting already, they said they'd take the job, but once the battle's over, Anankos had better answer all of their questions, to which Anankos confirms. The battle begins at this point.

Once the battle ends, Anankos notices that Owain, Inigo, and Severa have prevailed, stating he is pleased to see them live up to their reputations; Owain states that the enemies were no match for them, and Inigo stating he's glad this part of the ordeal is over and noting no permanent damage was caused. Severa brings up that a deal's a deal and asks Anankos to start talking, asking who the enemies were and just who Anankos is anyway; Anankos states he'll tell her all she wishes to know, but not until they reach his kingdom. With Severa asking why, Anankos states that if he tells them all he knows where they stand, he will vanish from this world, as there is a curse protecting the information they seek, telling Inigo he's afraid such information is true upon his shocked reaction; Owain says he's eager to get moving as they won't know what they're dealing with until they have all of the details, with Anankos apologizing for the secrecy, allowing himself to reward the three in advance. Anankos then asks what things humans seek, making guesses of longevity, eternal beauty, and incomparable wealth, to which both Owain and Inigo giving puzzled reactions; Severa tells Owain and Inigo that they are missing the point, as Anankos's "rewards" are impossible. This prompts Severa to ask Anankos if he's some kind of god, to which Anankos states he has been called one in the past; Inigo then asks why he even needs their help if he has that kind of power, to which Anankos fails to respond properly, with Severa stating it's probably due to the curse Anankos mentioned. Severa asks Anankos to give them the reward and get them out of the area, with Inigo stating he can't wrap his head around things--longevity sounds nice but it would be a long time until they can appreciate it; Anankos states that if there's something else they desire, they only have to name it; Owain asks if he can bring people back to life, with Severa stating Owain's crazy, with Inigo adding that he was thinking the same thing, saying he wants to know as well. Severa states she's also thought about having her real parents back as well countless times; Owain again asks if Anankos could bring back their loved ones, with Anankos stating he is truly sorry--bringing the dead back to life is beyond his power, with Owain stating that's what he thought he'd say. Inigo then asks Anankos about restoring a world that's been decimated, with Anankos asking him what he means; Inigo states that there's a place they couldn't protect--their original future. Inigo then adds that if that future was filled with plants and flowers again, it would at least look as nice as it did when it was at peace--it may seem small, but it would bring hope; Severa adds that it's not a bad idea, but also suggests adding nice gravestones for every person that died in that future, with Owain further adding it would mean so much to him to make his original world beautiful again and creating a proper memorial for those that were lost--even if they could never see it with their own eyes, at least they'd know they did something to improve their original future. Anankos asks them if that's what they really want, meaning they'd be risking their lives for a reward they may never see, that they'll have no way of knowing he even did what they said; Owain, Inigo, and Severa all confirm that this is what they want, with Owain adding it's the most they can do for their original future. Anankos states he shall restore the earth of their original future, creating gravestones for all who died there, then begins chanting an incantation; the screen then flashes.

Once the flash is finished, Anankos states he has granted Owain, Inigo, and Severa their request, that their original future is blossoming once more, to which they all thank him; Anankos then starts to ask them not to worry, then is suddenly startled--Owain asks him why, to which Anankos states he heard voices. Anankos states that when he blessed their original future, he sensed the presence of a certain tactician, setting up a grave for that person and those he/she was closest to--he felt it was the right thing to do even though their bodies are long gone, revealing he heard their voices; after a reaction from Severa, Anankos states it is certainly what they were thinking of. Inigo asks what they said, with Anankos stating the voices mainly said "thank you" over and over again with joy and laughter, "safe travels", and "We're always watching over you, no matter where you are"; Inigo and Severa are visibly crying. Anankos states that, before they journey to his kingdom, he wishes to give the three of them something, which Owain reveals it to be a tiny crystal ball; Anankos states that, once their work is done, if they wish to return to their original future, they can use the crystal to do so--the crystal has the power to transport them through space and time, and after they complete their mission, they can use it to return to this spot or even back to their original future, but they can only be used once. Severa states that if they decide to return to their original future, they can never return to this spot, to which Anankos states it is taboo for humans to travel through time as it is, and even he does not have the power to break this rule more than he already has--the fact that the god of this world had the power to transport so many of them leaves him in awe; Owain states he never thought they'd ever be able to return to their original future, with Inigo stating that would mean leaving behind everyone in this world and states he'd never go back without them, and Severa adds they'd at least be able to visit their parents' graves and leave flowers for them. Anankos states they need not make their decisions now and to consider their options carefully and can wait to decide until they complete their mission in his world; Owain states they'll save any world again as long as it takes, with Inigo and Severa making puzzled reactions and Severa telling Owain this is no time for theatrics. Owain states that all they need to think about right now is helping Anankos--there's no point thinking or worrying about their original future just yet, they have a mission to complete first, and then they can decide what to do; after all, the three of them are going together as a team, and they'll have plenty of time to think things through and talk them over. Inigo tells Owain he's right, that now is not the time to pine over their original future or to miss the world they're currently in--they've already received a better reward than they could have hoped for; right now, the three of them should join together and focus on the task at hand; Severa states that their parents already gave their blessings and thanks, saying she'll always cherish that thought. Severa then expresses eagerness to get going, that they're counting on Anankos; Anankos says he's counting on the three of them as well, and states he shall begin the process of transporting them to his world, asking them to have patience and that it may take some time. Owain, Inigo, and Severa state that they're all ready, to which Anankos says he understands; he then notices an object that was somehow given to him by the tactician--something he shall accept with gratitude, it's a gift that shall surely come in handy. The player recieves a Fell Brand at this point.

We cut to deep within ruins in Valla, to which a different version of Anankos states his disappointment that his pawns were unable to complete their mission; he expresses disgust at the thought that the version of Anankos previously seen is still alive, as he thought it faded away a long time ago after breaking apart from him, asking himself what his other self is plotting. A mysterious figure appears, to which Anankos asks her what she wants; the figure states that the other Anankos will soon return here with Owain, Inigo, and Severa in tow. Anankos states he knows this and tells the figure he grants her the honor of killing them and to use as many soldiers as she needs, to which the figure thanks him.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This chapter can be fairly straightforward if you know what you're doing due to you controlling the Awakening trio, who are all a fair bit more powerful than the enemies.

Turn 1: Have Inigo talk to Severa to receive an Umbrella (and Owain, if you wish) and pair him up with Severa. Have Severa use her Armorslayer and move two spaces west and two spaces south, in the range of all three Knights and a Fighter. Have Owain move two spaces to the left, pull out his Levin Sword, and use his Spirit Dust. On the enemy phase, every enemy in range except the Oni Chieftain will be killed. At the end of the turn, three Mercenaries show up.

Turn 2: Move Severa down two spaces and have her use the Dracoshield you got. Keep the Armorslayer equipped. Owain moves one space right and finishes the Oni Chieftain. On the enemy phase, the Mercenaries wipe themselves out on Severa's blade. Two Oni Savages to the north will advance.

Turn 3: Move Severa north four spaces and talk to Owain, if you wish. Move Owain south three spaces and have him use the Talisman he got. On the enemy phase, the Oni Savages will get themselves killed. The southeastern Dark Mages and the eastern Ninjas will move out, and enemy Cavaliers and Sky Knights will take the field.

Turn 4: Everyone holds their positions. On the enemy phase, all of the Dark Mages are wounded. The Ninjas continue to advance.

Turn 5: Severa moves one space south and switches to Inigo, who finishes the wounded Sorcerer with his Umbrella. Owain finishes a Dark Mage. On the enemy phase, the other Dark Mage dies, the Cavaliers approach, and the Ninjas start to breath down your neck.

Turn 6: Inigo moves two spaces south and switches to Severa, who equips her Armorslayer and takes and uses Inigo's Energy Drop. Owain moves one space north so that the Ninja can't get your Mercenaries. On the enemy phase, you mow down the Cavaliers and wound the Ninjas. The Sky Knights advance and 5 enemy Wyvern Riders appear.

Turn 7: Owain moves one space south and finishes one Ninja. Severa moves two spaces north and switches to Inigo, who finishes the other Ninja with his Umbrella. On the enemy phase, the Master Ninja and the Kinshi Knight attack Owain, who is seriously wounded. The Wyverns approach.

Turn 8: Owain pulls out his Wyrmslayer, takes Severa's Concoction and Elixir, and uses the Elixir. Inigo switches to Severa, who kills the Master Ninja with her Armorslayer. On the enemy phase, the fliers all attack. Owain should be wounded enough to start using Vantage, so he should be fine.

Turn 9: By this point, there should only be a Kinshi and a Wyvern left. Kill them both. On the enemy phase, the Master of Arms, Swordmaster, Sniper, and Onmyoji advance.

Turn 10: Put Severa in range of the Swordmaster and Master of Arms, equip her Steel Katana, and use the Speedwing. Move Owain out of danger and heal him again. On the enemy phase, the Swordmaster is wounded and the Master of Arms is killed. The boss and the Great Master advance.

Turn 11: Place Inigo just outside the Onmyoji's range and have him kill the Swordmaster with his Umbrella. Move Owain next to Inigo inside the Onmyoji's range and have him use the Seraph Robe. On the enemy phase, the Sniper is wounded and the Onmyoji is killed.

Turn 12: Move Inigo just outside the boss Swordmaster's range, switch to Severa, and equip her with the Silver Sword. Move Owain next to Severa inside the boss's range and have him finish off the Sniper with his Levin Sword. On the enemy phase, the boss Swordmaster and the Great Master attack.

Turn 13: Have Severa kill the Great Master with the Steel Katana, then have Owain heal. Allow the boss to attack again.

Turn 14: If the boss dies on this turn, consider the xenologue a game, set, and match.

Trivia

  • This chapter is the only one in all of Fates to make use of the Myrmidon class.
    • Inigo and Severa reuse the Awakening help text description for the Mercenary class.
  • Because of the three units re-using their Fates sound clips when fighting, Owain can sometimes end up saying "Odin Dark knows no fear" when he is paired up with another unit. This happens before Anankos grants him the Odin alias.
