— An Agustria villager

(Japanese: ヘズル Hezul), dubbed the "Black Knight" (Japanese: 黒騎士), was a member of the Twelve Crusaders, the original wielder of Mystletainn and the founder of the Kingdom of Agustria.

Biography

As with the other Crusaders, Hezul was a warrior fighting in a revolution against the tyranny of the Lopt Empire, and was one of the survivors barricaded in Darna Fortress when the tide turned against their movement. It was at this fortress that the Miracle of Darna occurred, changing the tide of the war: Hezul was chosen by an unidentified member of the twelve dragon "gods" who descended upon the fortress, to undergo a blood-bond with said dragon, transforming him into one of the Crusaders. He was granted Mystletainn, sealed to his new holy lineage, by this dragon.

With the other Crusaders, Hezul fought in the rest of the Holy War and contributed to the downfall of the Lopt Empire. At the war's conclusion, Hezul founded Agustria and reigned as its first king. Of his numerous children, only his youngest daughter inherited his Brand and major Holy Blood; this daughter was married off to the Nordion nobility of Agustria, inadvertently permanently transferring his Holy Blood to House Nordion. As a result, following Hezul's death, none of his direct descendants - the future monarchs of Agustria - possessed his Holy Blood.[1] This was eventually rectified in Grann 778, where after the extermination of the Agusty royal family two decades earlier, the Agustrian throne was succeeded by the major-blooded Ares of Nordion following the liberation of Agustria from the Grannvale Empire.

  1. "Black Knight Hezul founded the Agusty Royal Family. He had many children and one of them, his youngest daughter who possessed the Brand, was married off to the Nordion family. From then on, the successor of the Brand appeared within the Nordion Royal Family and they were allowed to take the Demon Sword Mystletainn if they swore an oath of loyalty to the Agusty Royal Family. In terms of bloodline, the rulers of Agusty were Hezul's direct descendants." - Designers' notes from a Genealogy of the Holy War playing guide, as translated by Serenes Forest
