Heroic Ordeals is a game mode in Fire Emblem Heroes, added to the game in the Greil's Devoted update and going live on February 7, 2019. Heroic Ordeals allows players to send teams of two into battle against four foes, with each map designed specifically for a chosen character or character variant who must be deployed for that map.
Overview
Players first select the map they wish to challenge. Only maps that correspond to characters or character variants the player has on hand are available to choose from; for example, if a player has yet to obtain Tailtiu, the player cannot take on Tailtiu's trial, whereas if a player has gotten rid of their free copy of Matthew and has yet to obtain another one, the player cannot take on Matthew's trial. Characters with multiple variants have separate trials for each variant, and the variants are not interchangable; for example, if the player has only the normal variation of Mist (as introduced in the World of Radiance update), they cannot take on the trial for her Valentine's variation (as introduced in the Greil's Devoted update), whereas if the player has only the Performing Arts variation of Shigure, they cannot take on the trial for his normal variation (as introduced in the Rite of Frost update). At minimum, the player will have access to three trials (those for the normal variations of Alfonse, Sharena, or Anna, which the player will unavoidably recruit and cannot be gotten rid of).
Once the player has chosen their trial, they must then choose two characters to take on the trial. One of the two choices must be the character whose trial has been chosen; for example, if the player chose to take on Legion's trial, Legion must be one of the two characters in the player's team. Once the trial starts, players have twenty turns to complete the map while keeping both of their characters alive. The trial is cleared once all four enemies are defeated; the first time the trial is cleared with the focus character getting two of the kills, the player will win Dragonflowers of the color matching their movement type. Dragonflower yields are proportional to when the character or variant was introduced to the game in relation to the most recent version; for example, characters/variants that were part of the game at its initial launch will yield less Dragonflowers than those introduced in the A King's Worth update more than two years later.
