Role

Hel first appeared in Xenologue 4, welcoming Surtr into her realm and stating her intentions to take his power for herself. She also states her intention to bring the Order of Heroes into her realm in due time, after Surtr claims that they could potentially have the strength to provide opposition.

In Book III, Hel gives Eir the order to infiltrate the surface world and kill its inhabitants when the time is right. She also sends her generals, Líf and Thrasir, in order to battle the Order of Heroes. Later, Hel ventures to the surface world to battle the Order personally, alongside Tibarn, Nailah, and Leanne. After her defeat, Hel places a curse on Alfonse that would kill him in nine days.

After nine days have passed, Hel appears before Alfonse to deliver her judgment, but his father, Gustav, takes the blow meant for him, as the curse was tied to the victim's bloodline, and dies as a result. She revives Gustav as a general for her army and forces him to fight against the Order against his will. After Gustav's second demise, Hel attempts to curse Alfonse again, but this time, Alfonse shows no fear by declaring that he would use the nine days to find Hel's weakness. When Eir is on her own, Hel appears to Eir to remind her of her mission, then departs.

As a playable character

Hel had information as a playable unit added in a dedicated Mythic Hero update, making her the game's thirteenth Mythic Hero; she was made available for summoning as part of a summoning event released on July 30, 2020.

Hel is notably the first former enemy-exclusive unit whose personal weapon skill from their time as an enemy-exclusive unit did not make the transition to their playable skill kit; instead of her Hel Scythe from earlier, she instead has the new Hel's Reaper.

Hel: Death Sovereign

She curses the living and sends them helplessly into the embrace of death. She is Hel, sovereign of the realm of the dead…which is also called Hel! Hel's power is nourished by death, and her goal is to claim all who still live and breathe for her realm. After raising up the fallen Heroes Líf and Thrasir to be her servants, she began an invasion of Askr. Hel carried out horrible acts to grow her power. She repeatedly executed Eir, a Hero who had been granted many lives, and used the strength that she gained to spread death throughout a number of other worlds. Askr was no exception to this terror, and our people began to succumb to her curse… In another world, Hel succeeded in destroying Askr and Embla, and she even took the life of my very own father. Yet, I'm told that when she once embraced Eir as her own daughter, she gave off a tender warmth… Where did things go so wrong?
