Harmonic Lance |
A mistranslation of the Japanese name. 倭, which means "Japanese", can also mean "harmony" due to conflation with the homophonous character 和 (which conversely originally meant "harmony" but has gained the additional meaning of "Japanese" due to conflation with 倭). Compare the Japanese names of Wo Dao, Wo Gùn, and yumi. If this item were named in English with the same pattern as its sword and axe counterparts, it would be "wō móu", the Mandarin Chinese reading of 倭鉾. |
