Hamill Canyon (Japanese:ハミル渓谷 Hamill Canyon) is the thirteenth chapter of Eirika's route in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.

Plot

Main article: Hamill Canyon/Script

The chapter opens on Valter reporting the death of Glen to Cormag. Valter brought the corpse of Glen back to the capital as proof of his word and falsely names Eirika as Glen’s killer. Valter suggests that Cormag take on the title of “The Sunstone” and replace his brother in the Imperial Three, but Cormag is far too enraged to consider Valter’s words. The grief-stricken Cormag demands to know Eirika’s whereabouts. Once Valter gives him the current intel on Eirika, Cormag immediately departs Grado Keep. After Cormag leaves, Valter muses to himself over his expert handling of Glen’s short-tempered brother and how much more interesting of a prey Eirika will become after defeating Cormag.

Meanwhile, just as Eirika’s group arrives in Jehanna, a messenger from Frelia arrives and informs the group that Frelia has engaged Pablo’s forces in Carcino. Pablo’s forces are far outmatched by Frelia’s soldiers and are retreating towards Jehanna. Innes speculates that Pablo is attempting to meet with the imperial army of Grado to bolster their strength. The messenger also reports that Ephraim has forced the enemy to surrender at Fort Rigwald and is currently marching towards the imperial capital of Grado. Innes doubts that Ephraim could truly beat the elite forces at the capital, though Eirika chooses to believe in her brother’s abilities.

The messenger departs and Eirika begins to make preparations to break through Grado’s army to join with Jehanna’s. Eirika advises L'Arachel to stay behind and leave the fighting to her allies, though, in typical fashion, L’Arachel dramatically refuses, claiming that participating in this battle is part of her sworn duty as an ally of justice. L’Arachel also adds that she cannot stand idly by and allow Grado to destroy Jehanna’s Sacred Stone. Eirika asks where she obtained information that only the royal family of each country could possibly know. L’Arachel cryptically replies that the wind whispered it to her and adds that the wind also told her that knights of Rausten are marching to their current location and that the battle is theirs so long as they can hold out until they arrive. After conveying this info, the ever mysterious Troubadour leaves before Eirika gets the chance to ask any further questions.

On the battlefield, Grado’s army is making their final preparations to face Eirika’s army. Caellach is giving a final pep talk to his comrade, Aias. News of Eirika’s alleged killing of the Sunstone has left Aias doubting his ability to take down such a formidable opponent. Caellach assures Aias that he is more than capable of handling Eirika. Aias expresses some regret with following Caellach into Grado’s imperial army, though Caellach reminds Aias that their current life is far better than their former existence as mercenaries in Jehanna. After musing about using this war to elevate his status to that of a king, Caellach leaves to handle the advancing knights of Rausten.

Once Eirika’s group arrive on the battlefield, Seth warns his liege that Pablo’s army is advancing from the rear so they must exercise due caution in the battle. L’arachel also reminds Eirika that their goal is to survive until Rausten’s knights can arrive. With their goal of survival established, Eirika begins to prepare for the battle.

During the battle, Cormag appears on the field. He quickly flies to Eirika and challenges her to a duel to avenge his fallen brother. When Cormag accuses her of killing his brother, Eirika is taken aback as she never fought Glen nor even knew he was dead. Eirika tries to explain this but Cormag is suspicious of her and demands proof. Eirika admits she has no proof other than Glen’s words before he departed: that Eirika had the same gentle heart that she did when the two first met. Eirika’s account of Glen echoes the doubts he had expressed to Cormag in Grado Keep, prompting Cormag to lower his lance and consider the situation a second time. After reassessing the situation, Cormag realizes that Valter lied to him about everything regarding his brother’s death. This epiphany enrages Cormag and causes him to set his sights for revenge on Valter. In pursuit of this goal, Cormag decides to join Eirika, paying no mind as to whether or not him raising his lance against a general of Grado will cause his homeland to brand him as a traitor.

Eventually, the knights of Rausten arrive, bringing the battle to a decisive end in favor of Eirika and her allies. Once the knights have routed the enemy, one of them reports to L’Arachel and refers to her as “princess.” L’Arachel realizes that the soldier just revealed her identity, prompting her to reveal her identity as none other than the jewel of the theocracy of Rausten, Princess L’Arachel. The princess claims that she was acting under divine order to strike down evil in Magvel, though a soldier instantly corrects this claim, asserting that L’Arachel begged for permission to go on this anonymous quest for justice after suffering harsh words from the court troubadour Saaga. The soldier also gives the two princesses 5,000 gold from King Mansel. Immediately after receiving these funds, Seth brings news from Jehanna: The palace has fallen to Grado. He also reports that Lyon, the prince of Grado, led the force responsible for the fall.

If the battle ended without Aias dying, he rides to Jehanna Hall and confronts Caellach. The knights of Rausten arrived far too early for them to have been delayed by a warrior as powerful as Caellach, leading Aias to conclude that his old friend planned to abandon him from the beginning. Caellach does not deny Aias’ accusation for a second and explains that in order to realize his ambitions, he cannot be chained to the past. With this, Caellach strikes down Aias in a single blow and moves on as if nothing happened.

Strategy

If you wish to recruit Cormag, don't get impatient and kill Aias before Turn 5, because that's when he shows up as an enemy reinforcement.

Trivia

  • Some enemy units are mistakenly named "Remnant" in the English version, which is supposed to be used for the remnants of Grado's army in later chapters. In the Japanese version, these units are named パブロ私兵 Pablo Private Soldier.
