“ | Yeah, Halvan, I'm sure the village will appreciate your patient attitude while everyone's being rounded up and jailed! | ” | — Osian to Halvan in Chapter 1: The Warrior of Fiana |

Halvan (Japanese: ハルヴァン Halvan) is a playable fighter in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.
Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
Role
Halvan was with the Fiana Freeblades on a job outside of Fiana when it was attacked by the forces of Munster led by Weissmann, during which Nanna and Mareeta were kidnapped by Raydrik. Halvan worked with the rest of the Freeblades to drive out Munster's forces, after which him and the other members of the Freeblades accompanied Leif to rescue the captives. Halvan was separated from Leif after their assault on Kelbeth fortress when Leif was captured by Raydrik. He, along with Osian and Ronan, was arrested by Hannibal, having been mistaken for bandits, and was held at Meath Castle. They were reunited with Leif when Leif sought refuge in Meath and explained that the captive Freeblades were his friends; there were released and rejoined Leif's liberation army. Later during their attack on Dagdar's bandits in Mount Violdrake Halvan could potentially persuade Marty to join them. Afterwards, Halvan accompanies Leif's liberation army until at least the liberation of Munster. His involvement, if any, with the war after Leif's forces merged with Seliph's is unknown, as he does not appear in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Halvan is available from the start of Thracia 776. He is a level 2 Fighter with solid base stats, a high FCM of 4, and the Vantage skill. These traits make him a good combat unit in the early chapters.
Halvan is often compared to Osian since they share availability and classes. But despite their frequent comparison, Halvan is much worse than Osian. He lacks access to the tools Osian has, which makes Halvan the worse unit between the two.
Halvan cannot use the excellent Vouge personal axe and has no alternative for it. Halvan receives the Brave Axe in Chapter 1, but anyone can use it - for example, Dagdar. That said, he can make use of Vantage combined with the Brave Axe. Since Thracia 776 Vantage works even above 50% HP, all Halvan needs to do is enter enemy range. Then, he can kill 1-range enemies on enemy phase before they can damage him.
While Halvan's FCM of 4 is high, there are no high-crit axes available early. This is a problem for Halvan, because it prevents him from reaching 100% crit chance on the second attack. Osian does not have this problem, because he has Wrath, and the Vouge axe has a crit bonus. Osian also has more supports than Halvan does. Halvan is only supported by Eyvel, who becomes unavailable after the early game. He does not support anyone himself, either.
This leads to another problem with Halvan - he has no effective way of dealing with low hitrates. Osian can use the Vouge, which has high accuracy. Since Osian has Wrath and the Vouge has a crit chance bonus, he can also rely on critical hits on both combat phases. All Halvan can do is hope he hits. Since his skill growth is low, low hitrates will become a problem for him later in the game.
The player can boost Halvan's skill growth with Crusader Scrolls to mitigate this issue. In fact, Halvan is one of the best users of the Od Scroll obtained in chapter 6. It grants +30% skill growth, raising Halvan's growth from a low 20% to a good 50%. Having higher skill mitigates Halvan's accuracy problems and increases his crit rate. Every point of crit helps him use his FCM of 4 to its full potential.
Halvan lacks several advantages Osian has, making him a worse unit than Osian. But even so, he is a solid combat unit in his own right and has high availability. While he may not excel as much as combat gods like Osian, Finn and Dagdar, he can still help.
