Haitaka is a boss character that can be recruited by capturing him with Niles in Conquest chapter 9. He is the only Spear Fighter in the path outside of Einherjar. He has low luck, high strength and skill, and fairly good speed; with a Speed Tonic, he will be able to double enemy Archers and Oni Savages in the next chapter, and ORKO the former. As an enemy, he also several skills that would not otherwise be available to his class set, gaining one more with each difficulty level. Unusually for a capturable enemy, Haitaka also has very good growth rates, which complement his solid bases, and give him very strong overall combat. Though his defenses are somewhat low, his high HP can allow him to take a hit in spite of this.
On all difficulties, Haitaka will have Rally Defense, far earlier than any other unit in Conquest can possibly have it. This is an incredible support skill, and by itself makes Haitaka very much worth capturing and deploying. The defense increase it provides to other units can stack with other bonuses such as from tonics and pair up, can buff up to twelve units in a single turn, and generally allows other units to survive many more encounters on enemy phase. It is particularly helpful in the next few chapters, which have several large groups of enemies that can be difficult to eliminate during player phase. On Hard mode and above, Haitaka additionally gains Strong Riposte along with higher base stats, enhancing his enemy phase and making him an overall stronger combat unit. His performance on Lunatic mode is largely identical to his Hard mode performance, as he only gains a weapon level and Seal Defense, the latter of which he will learn by levelling up normally.
Generally, Haitaka’s ideal promotion is Spear Master; it further enhances his good strength and speed, and offers more skills that can aid his combat even further. Seal Speed can also assist other members of the team. The bonus granted by the class along with his high skill can allow him to reach respectable crit rates overall. Furthermore, it grants a passive boost to critical avoid, helping to mitigate his low luck stat. Basara is a tempting option for Rend Heaven, which will activate very often thanks to Haitaka’s high skill, but this is not exactly necessary given he will likely already have reliable ORKO capabilities as a Spear Master.
Though Haitaka has great strengths, he is also held back greatly by his status as a bonus unit. As he has only one class set, he will always be stuck as an infantry unit, making him prone to being left behind mounted units, of which there are many in Conquest. Additionally, his weapon selection is small; though he can use tomes by promoting into Basara, his magic is too low for it too be effective, making him almost purely a lance unit. This means that his ranged attacks are mostly limited to the Javelin and Spear, which, while still handy, both negate his good speed. He also lacks supports entirely, meaning he benefits far less from pair up than other units, hindering his combat potential slightly. Despite this, Haitaka’s skills are useful without even entering combat, making him overall a worthwhile unit to consider even without investment.
