Appearance(s)

Gwendal Roche (pronounced /ˈgwɛndəl/[key]; Japanese: グェンダル Gwendal) is a minor antagonist appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. He is a knight in service to House Rowe of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus.

Biography

Gwendal is a knight in service to House Rowe of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus. Roughly four years prior to the start of the game, Sylvain tried to involve himself with Gwendal's daughter; he had to be placated by Ingrid. In the game proper, he follows House Rowe throughout the war between the Adrestian Empire and the rest of Fódlan. On the Crimson Flower route, House Rowe remains loyal to the Kingdom, and he is one of the commanders in defense of Fort Arianrhod alongside Cornelia, Rodrigue, and non-recruited Felix and Ingrid. On all other routes, House Rowe betrays the Kingdom for the Empire, and he pursues Byleth and their allies to the Valley of Torment to prevent them from receiving reinforcements. In both cases, he fights Byleth and their forces, but is killed in battle.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Role

Gwendal is a boss in Part II of the game, fought in Chapter 16 of Crimson Flower and Chapter 15 of all other routes.

Personality

Gwendal is utterly devoted to House Rowe, and any attempts to impugn his character on this basis fall on deaf ears. He is described as stubborn and unwilling to compromise. He is also oddly eager to find a good place to die honorably as a knight on non-Crimson Flower routes, and outright thanks Byleth and co. as he is slain. According to Ingrid, he has a daughter whom he is very protective of; he was apparently furious when Sylvain tried to hit on her.

Quotes

Battle quotes

Does a whelp like you really expect to kill me? I am Gwendal, the Gray Lion, a knight by the hand of Count Rowe! Do your worst!
— Gwendal as an enemy in Silver Snow/Azure Moon/Verdant Wind Chapter 15 and Crimson Flower Chapter 16.
Dimitri: The man praised as a lion is degraded to a mere traitor's underling.
Gwendal: A traitor's underling? That's upsetting, Your Highness. I am and always have been a knight of House Rowe.
Dimitri: How dare you? You are nothing but a lowly beast scavenging for scraps. You have forgotten the dignity of knighthood.
Gwendal: I may be lowly, but this beast is devoted to his master.
Dimitri: Ha! Then I had better kill the pet and deliver its head to that master...

— Gwendal fighting Dimitri in Azure Moon Chapter 15.
Gwendal: So. You've chosen to turn your blade against the count. Heh. Never thought I'd see the day, mongrel.
Yuri: And yet you are seeing it, aren't you? Say what you will. I know your true feelings for me. Sure, you watched my back by order of the count. But you cared too. You were the only one who treated me as an equal.
Gwendal: That is all in the past. This is no time for misplaced sentimentality. I must do what I came here to do.

— Gwendal fighting Yuri in Silver Snow/Azure Moon/Verdant Wind Chapter 15 and Crimson Flower Chapter 16.
