Role

Guy is hired by the Black Fang forces attempting to stop Eliwood and Hector from reaching the marquess of Santaruz. He reminisces about how a man named Matthew saved his life by giving him food when he was near starvation. When the battle begins, he runs into Matthew, who calls in Guy's life debt to him, and Guy is forced to join Eliwood's side. He stays with him for the rest of his quest.

Starting stats and growth rates

Stats with two figures separated by a ~ are presented as a range, representing stats that vary due to random growths. The figures to the left and right of the ~ are the stat's minimum and maximum possible values respectively.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Guy is the first myrmidon on Eliwood’s/Hector’s path and fits the “early joining myrmidon” trope like a glove. He has great speed and skill at the cost of lower strength and durability. He joins with a Killing Edge, which complements his high base skill and mediocre base strength. Guy faces no competition for the Killing Edge when he joins; other units either have a low sword rank or kill everything anyway, like Marcus. These circumstances make Guy the best user of the sword.

Guy’s early game offense is among the best in the army. There are few alternatives available, and Guy is capable of one-rounding enemies because he doubles everything and has a high crit chance with the Killing Edge. His offensive stats are outstanding in Hard Mode because he receives a +2 bonus to base strength, skill, and speed. However, his long-term potential suffers. Guy will be swordlocked for the entire game, meaning that, aside from the Light Brand and Runesword (both extremely limited), he cannot counterattack at 2-range. Many enemies in The Blazing Blade wield 2-range and 1-2 range weapons—a severe problem for Guy, because he cannot counter their attacks in most cases. He is a liability on the enemy phase unless all enemies he fights only have 1-range.

Guy also has a low constitution stat. Usually, it does not matter because enemies in The Blazing Blade are slow, and Guy’s speed is very high. However, it prevents him from doubling with heavy swords in the early game. Even later in the game, Guy’s constitution will be deficient because he only gains 1 constitution from his promotion. That makes it more difficult for him to double faster enemies with effective weapons like the Longsword. This flaw is relevant if Guy is used long-term and fights the enemy Valkyries in Chapter 29 (Hector Hard Mode).

Guy is also footlocked and does not become mounted upon promotion. His movement will forever be inferior to mounted units, and since the mounted units in The Blazing Blade are very good, the player will probably use many of them. Being footlocked also prevents Guy from having any utility—all Guy can do is fight enemies at 1-range. He is effective at it, but his most remarkable contributions are in the earlygame when the competition is sparse, and his good traits stand out more. In the long term, 1-2 range becomes essential, and most units can double because The Blazing Blade enemies are slow; Guy’s tremendous speed is overkill and does not provide him with an advantage.

Guy’s promotion does not fix his issues. It increases his sword rank and provides statistical increases but does not give him a mount or an additional weapon type. Guy’s most significant flaws are being swordlocked and being unmounted, so promoting him is not a tremendous benefit. Raven is a superior candidate for the first Hero Crest promotion because his long-term potential is higher. Raven gains access to axes through promoting—and with it, 1-2 range. Guy only acquires some bulk and attacking power, and the statistical increases are not even that high.

Endings

Guy, Mounted Swordsman
Guy continued in his quest to be the finest swordsman of all Sacae. His form was so perfected that all called him the Saint of Swords.

Guy and Priscilla
They fell in love amidst conflict, but Priscilla was a noble, and Guy was but a mercenary nomad. Guy rode away before her tears could stain the earth, though her smile was the brightest thing he ever saw.

Guy: I am Guy of the Kutolah!
Uhai: Kutolah... the Ash Wolf, Dayan's tribe! They're said to be the strongest on the plains. But you're still a child. Do you fight like one?

Trivia

  • In the pre-release build of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade Guy explicitly confirms to Priscilla that he is 15 years old,[2] the released version of Fire Emblem does not confirm his age explicitly, though dialogue with Rath implies his age may be the same as his statement in the prototype.[3][4]
  • The english localisation changed Guy's character-endings to a significant degree. In the japanese version, his Solo-ending states that he was seen as the Sword Saint's equal, instead of himself obtaining the title. In a similar fashion, his paired ending with Pricilla states that she convinced him to stay with her in the japanese version, while it states that he leaves her in the localisation.
