Gunpei Yokoi (Japanese: 横井 軍平 Yokoi Gunpei; sometimes rendered as Gumpei) was a Japanese video game and hardware designer who was employed by Nintendo from 1965 to 1996. He is most famous as the creator of the Game Boy and Game & Watch portable console lines, and of the modern D-pad design used by the controllers on every Nintendo console since the Nintendo Entertainment System.

During his time at Nintendo, he acted as the producer of numerous titles developed by Nintendo Research & Development 1, including several early Fire Emblem series games. Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War was the final game he produced for Nintendo, before departing the company as a result of the fallout of the disastrous Virtual Boy launch. Afterward, he moved on to develop the WonderSwan portable console for Bandai, where he remained until he died in a car crash in 1997.
