Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Remember—you've got only one life. I don't want any of you dying on me. In times like these, it matters not what our blood ties are. We are family. If you don't want to cause your family any grief, then live!
— Greil

Greil (Japanese: グレイル Greil), formerly known as Gawain (Japanese: ガウェイン Gawain), was the former leader of the Greil Mercenaries, husband of Elena, and father of Ike and Mist. He taught Zelgius the art of swordsmanship when he was one of the Four Riders for Daein. Greil was slain by the Black Knight shortly after rescuing Elincia in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. He had a personal axe, Urvan, which was used as a gravestone for three years.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Role

Before the events of Path of Radiance, Greil was known as Gawain and a member of Daein's Four Riders. At the time, he was married to Elena. After being given Lehran's Medallion and finding out the plans of King Ashnard, they fled Daein and went to the laguz nation of Gallia, where they started a family while Greil worked as a mercenary for the nation. When their children were a few years old, Greil mistakenly touched the medallion, leading him to slaughter multiple people, including Elena when she attempted to take the medallion away. Afterwards, Ike and Mist's memories were erased, Greil cut the tendons so he could no longer use swords, and he hired Volke, an assassin with the sole mission to kill him if the event were to ever happen again. Greil, Ike, and Mist then traveled north to Crimea, where he started the Greil Mercenaries with various people, including some of which he met in Gallia, including Titania, Shinon, and Gatrie.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Role

Greil does not appear in the game but is mentioned a few times by Ike, Mist and Zelgius. There are also two flashback scenes appearing in the game where he is seen. If the player unlocks Ike's special memory scene after defeating the Black Knight, it is revealed that Greil murdered many inhabitants of an unnamed village, including his own wife Elena. Greil lost his mind and control over his body after he touched Lehran's Medallion and killed many people with his own axe. It is also revealed that he hired and paid Volke to kill him, if Greil were to lose his mind and kill people unpurposefully again.

During a conversation in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn Caineghis returns Urvan to Ike, because he felt that Greil would have wanted to give his son the Urvan in order to motivate him.
