The Great Knight (グレートナイト) is an advanced class of armored fighters on horseback. They first appear in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, in which they are the promoted version of the Axe Knight class and only use axes. In Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, they are still the promoted version of an axe knight, but they can use axes while mounted and swords when dismounted. Great knights return in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, in which both cavaliers and knights can become Great Knights; great knights use swords, lances, and axes. Great knights in the mold of their Seisen no Keifu and Thracia 776 incarnation do exist in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, but were translated in the English version as "Axe Paladin".

Great knights are very strong units with especially high HP and strength. Since they are promoted units, they have high stats all around. In Thracia 776, they can dismount to enter buildings and better move over certain terrain. In The Sacred Stones, they actually have lower movement than other horse-riding units. Regardless, they are still useful units for many purposes.

In Seisen no Keifu and Thracia 776, axe knights promote to great knights. Later, in The Sacred Stones, both cavaliers and knights can become great knights.
