General
| ||||||
|
The General (Japanese: ジェネラル General) is an advanced armored class which debuted in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and is present in almost every game since; with the sole exception of the first game, it is the promoted form of the Knight or its weapon-specific variants. It is absent only in Gaiden, Radiant Dawn, and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia; in Radiant Dawn, it is instead divided into three weapon specialist variants, the Sword General, Lance General, and Axe General. Generals have always wielded lances in every game in which they appear, but their other weapons have varied wildly across the series, with Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776 even giving them access to all four physical weapon types.
As with their basic form, Generals epitomize slow and defensive gameplay: their immense defense and HP grants them excellent defensive capabilities, at the expense of low speed and the lowest movement of any class. Their primary weakness is to magical attacks, owing to their mediocre resistance, except in Radiant Dawn where the General variations have some of the best resistance among the physical classes. Their combat capabilities are decent, with good strength and typically possessing access to a wide variety of physical weapons, but are hindered by their low speed often leading to them being double-attacked, and by their low movement preventing them from keeping up with other allied units in crossing the field. The ideal use for Generals is as defensive pivots to guard choke points and thrones in defensive maps, or as bait to lure physically-attacking enemy units and sponge their attacks.
The General is the promoted form of the Knight in most games, with some exceptions. Despite both classes existing at the time, neither was associated with a class change line in the NES Shadow Dragon; this was rectified in Mystery of the Emblem with the establishment of the General as the Knight's advanced form. In Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776, the General is the promoted form of the two Knight variants available to the player: the Armored Sword in the former, and the Armored Axe in the latter. The Sacred Stones, Awakening, and Fates allow Knights the option of promoting to either General or Great Knight.

Trivia
- There have been more General bosses than bosses of any other class in the Fire Emblem series.
- The shells worn by generic Generals in Fire Emblem Fates are available as accessories in My Castle.
- Generals are unable to wield Levin Swords in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light due to graphical glitches resulting from their battle animations.
- The General is one of only two playable classes in Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem (the other being the unpromoted Knight) and the only playable class outright in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 to be able to wield lances while unmounted. Therefore, they are the only ones who can wield lances indoors and the only ones who can wield lances in the respective final chapters.
