Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Gareth is one of the two playable red dragons in the game and joins extremely late in endgame. He has a high strength base and an S rank strike, so he can contribute heavy damage. His defense is high but does very little to help him, as all enemy units from his join time are magic users. His speed base is very low, so he will get doubled frequently. As a dragon laguz, he has 1-2 range combat, so he can counter most enemy units. He has low mobility which limits his options. Ultimately as a combat unit, Gareth is very weak and performs best as a support unit.

Gareth has a high growths in strength and defense and will cap them quickly. He has low growths in magic, speed, and resistance, with the latter two harming him significantly and are unsalvagable for his available chapters. His skill and luck growth are high for a laguz unit, which can help hit more reliably, especially Ashera's auras. While Gareth's combat would benefit from maxing his strike rank, it is unrealistic for him to raise it in two chapters. In a huge contrast to Nasir, Gareth's base resistance is notoriously poor, making it extremely easy for all the enemies to effortlessly kill him, made worse with the fact that he will always get doubled. Fortunately, his low resistance can be patched with tools such as Ward staves, Pure Waters, wardwood tiles, and standing next to Kurthnaga (Night Tide).

Gareth has the Blood Tide skill, which gives a +5 strength and skill boost to adjacent units. This is an extremely valuable support skill for endgame as Ashera's auras are extremely dodgy, so this boost allows more player units to accurately hit them. Blood Tide can be combined with Ena's version and Nasir's White Pool so a unit is able to double and can deal even more accurate damage.

Gareth has a thunder affinity which gives a light defense and avoid boost. Due to his join time, it is only possible for him to build one C support, which is still impractical as building a support with him will often take more than one chapter. As a non-combat unit, he does not benefit much from a support partner, though one may consider pairing Gareth with an earth affinity partner to help improve his avoid rates.

Personality and character

Gareth is one of the most underdeveloped characters in the series. He appears very infrequently and speaks very little during his time onscreen, but he can be characterized by an extreme devotion to the Goldoan royal family. He unquestioningly joins Dheginsea in the defense of the Tower of Guidance, but refuses to raise arms against Kurthnaga, the crown prince, or Ena, Rajaion's princess-consort, under any circumstances. After Dheginsea's death, he follows Kurthnaga without a second thought, again showing his loyalty towards Goldoa. Gareth is also trustworthy enough to be aware of Dheginsea's greatest secrets, and knowledgeable enough to share them with Kurthnaga and to become his nephew's chamberlain afterwards.
