— Galzus to Mareeta in Chapter 24: The Baron in Black

Galzus (Japanese: ガルザス Galzus) is the prince of House Rivough in Isaach, a cousin of Prince Shanan of Isaach through his mother - the eldest child of King Mananan - and a full-blooded heir of the Crusader Od. During the Grannvale-Isaach war of Grann 757, Galzus fled Rivough with his daughter Mareeta when King Mananan attacked Rivough in retribution for the Rivough attack on Darna, and became a mercenary. He was separated from Mareeta and eventually entered the service of Duke Raydrik of Manster.

Biography

Early life

Before Rivough's fall, Galzus's wife gave birth to their only child, Mareeta, but died soon after Mareeta was born.[1] When King Mananan launched his attack on Rivough, Galzus fled with Mareeta. The two travelled together for some time, but were separated somewhere near Conote, when Mareeta wandered off against Galzus's wishes and was snatched up by a slave trader. Despite his best efforts searching, Galzus was unable to find Mareeta and eventually gave up, believing she would be better off without somebody so murderous for a father.[2]

Manster

After losing Mareeta, Galzus worked as a mercenary, and eventually entered Raydrik's service in Manster. Under Raydrik's employment, Galzus worked as a guard at Manster Castle, and was tasked with pursuing Leif and the Magi as they fled imprisonment in the castle. He nonetheless secretly defied Raydrik to release Mareeta from her own imprisonment, entrusting her care to Saias while he remained in Raydrik's service, although he refused to explain his true motives for doing so to Saias.[3]

When Leif later returned, leading his liberation army to storm Manster, Galzus still acted as one of Raydrik's mercenaries. He was approached by Mareeta, who had experienced a dream during her possession which revealed his identity as her father. At her behest, he joined Leif's army to help save Eyvel, Mareeta's adoptive mother. Upon Leif's army's successful rescue of Eyvel, he met with her for the first time and entrusted her with continuing to take care of Mareeta, but at her request agreed to visit Fiana once a year to visit.[4]

Role

Galzus first appears as an enemy optionally in Chapter 5. He arrives as a reinforcement from the central arena gate if four of the arena enemies have already been killed at the beginning of the next enemy phase; it is possible to complete the chapter without triggering his arrival. He is also an enemy reinforcement in Chapter 6, arriving at the beginning of the 15th enemy phase. In both of these appearances, it is impractical to fight him as his stats vastly surpass those of all units playable at the time, and his presence is likely intended as more of a warning to hurry one's escape. Despite this, some players may want to bait him into capturing an unarmed unit and then capture him with a mounted unit (preferably Felgus) with a Brave Sword.

Galzus later re-appears as an enemy in Chapter 24, and in this chapter he can be recruited.

Personality and character

Galzus attempts to hide his emotions by establishing himself as stoic and distant, but he still cares about the people important to him and his family.[5] Despite the effort he put into trying to find Mareeta after her abduction by the slave traders, once he realized he was never going to do so, he came to believe Mareeta would be better off without having a murderous figure such as himself in his life.[2] Once he reunited with Mareeta and her adoptive mother, Eyvel, he felt it was best to leave Mareeta in Eyvel's care with the promise of visiting her in Fiana once per year at Eyvel's request.[4] According to Mareeta, she remembers Galzus prior to her separation from him as being gentle and kind in addition to his great strength.[6]

Eyvel: I agree. Mareeta is my daughter now—has been for years. I wouldn't let you take her away from me even if you wanted to.
Galzus: Good... After this is all over, I'll go back to my life of wandering. You'll never have to see me again.
Eyvel: Then before you leave, I have one last favor to ask, Galzus.
Galzus: Name it. If it's within my power, it will be done.
Eyvel: Once every year, would you visit us in Fiana? That's all I ask.
Galzus: ...... Very well... I will.

  6. "We were separated when I was very young, but I still remember him clearly. He was a towering mountain of a man, strong as an ox, and yet... gentle. Galzus the sellsword... You're... It's you! You're my father!" — Mareeta, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
