...Lady Olwen, I can tell you only one thing for certain: your place isn't with the Empire and its army. Not anymore. But perhaps there could be a place for us in Prince Leif's army.
— Fred to Olwen in Chapter 11x: Murder Holes

Fred (Japanese: フレッド Fred) is a playable paladin in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. He is subordinate to and protector of Olwen. He is a knight of House Stase.[1]

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Role

Fred is first seen accompanying Olwen to Noel Canyon in Chapter 10. He does not say much other than that he thinks Kempf has a grudge against Olwen to send her on tedious daily missions to the canyon.[2]

He returns with Olwen to Dandrum Fortress in Chapter 11 to report the attack on the fortress in Noel Canyon. He witnesses Kempf send Olwen to the dungeon and accuses Kempf of instigating and imprisoning her for personal reasons.[3] Kempf denies this and has Fred sent to head the defenses of the fortress. Kempf encourages Fred to get killed in battle; if he retreats Kempf says he will ensure Olwen's execution.[4] For the sake of Olwen, Fred obeys Kempf's orders. During the battle, Leif, seeing Fred's distaste for the underhanded tactics being employed, allows Fred to escape instead of fighting him to the death.[5]

If Fred survived Chapter 11 he appears in Chapter 11x and assists Olwen in escaping from the fortress's prison. Olwen decides to join Leif's forces to rescue children captured in the child hunts captured by the Friege house; Fred agrees to accompany her.[6]

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Fred joins roughly halfway through the game in Chapter 11x. He comes with very solid performance on outdoor maps thanks to his mount, 9 move, and decent stats for the most part. He does suffer from some limitations in combat; his luck is fairly low and more importantly his FCM is a meager 1, so he is unlikely to get crits. While this slightly hold back his performance, he is still a very solid unit on outdoor maps.

On indoor maps Fred's performance is more lackluster: he is demoted to only 6 move and takes slight stat penalties, as well as losing his C rank in lances. Thankfully, he retains his A rank in swords, which allows him to use any non-personal sword in the game. Because of this he still performs well enough indoors, although he fails to fill much of a niche.

Fred does have a while to take advantage of his outdoor performance, as chapters 13 through 17 are all outdoors, however by the late-game Fred becomes more mediocre, as many chapters are indoors and his stats become less impressive. Because he is promoted his experience gain will be very slow, and his growths are fairly mediocre besides strength and HP. These problems can be mitigated with investment and scrolls, but other units compete for those. Overall, Fred is a solid unit who struggles to keep up in the late-game.

Endings

Fred, Knight of House Stase
After the war, Fred returned home to the Dukedom of Friege. There, he spent all of his strength helping the new, young lord rebuild the war-torn land. He went on to marry a young noblewoman with close ties to House Friege's inner circle, though the difference in their age made him the butt of many jokes.

  3. "Fred: General Kempf! Explain yourself!
Kempf: Fred, my dear boy, you look different from your usual self. Is something amiss?
Fred: Don't play dumb! Why have you done this to Lady Olwen?! It's a violation of our military code to punish a subordinate over a personal grudge like this! You have a responsibility to overturn this! Please, sir, release her at once! Otherwise, I have no choice but to report this matter to Princess Ishtar!
" — Fred to Kempf, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  4. "Be that as it may, as Olwen's adjutant, her duties now fall to you. I command you to ride forth and engage these invaders in her place. But be warned: this isn't merely an order, it's a punishment. You are not permitted to retreat for any reason! See the battle through, regardless of the outcome, or I'll have Olwen executed!" — Kempf to Fred, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  5. "Leif: ...If you've no mind to fight, sir, then we have no reason to meddle with you. In fact, we may even be able to help each other—I'd wager the both of us have little energy to spare, now.
Fred: I... can agree to those terms. I've many things left undone. ...It's settled, then. We can both agree that our time is better spent devising an escape.
Leif: Very well. My forces will storm the castle's interior in short order. When that happens, you should make your escape to the south—we can take care of the gate ourselves.
" — Leif to Fred, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  6. "Olwen: What exactly have I accomplished? How many children have been stolen from their families under my watch? How many caravans of children have I helped send to Belhalla? How many... how many sacrifices to Loptous have I made possible?
    Fred: Lady Olwen...
Olwen: Never before have I had such... doubts... about what I've done. I believed that as long as I followed my brother, there could be no questioning the righteousness of my path. But now... Now I'm as blind as a newborn! I can't be certain of anything! I have nothing to believe in! I... I don't know what to do...
Fred: ...Lady Olwen, I can tell you only one thing for certain: your place isn't with the Empire and its army. Not anymore. But perhaps there could be a place for us in Prince Leif's army.
