So ends the human race. The future is built upon the past...But your kind shall never see it. Your mother and father...are dead, tiny one. And now it is your turn...to DIE!
— Grima

Five Gemstones is the twenty-first chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, the Shepherds have fallen into Validar's trap and must escape Plegia Castle. The chapter's aftermath sees Robin manipulated into doing Validar's will, and Lucina having to make a difficult choice.

Plot

Main article: Five Gemstones/Script

The Shepherds are approaching Plegia Castle, with Lucina being the first to spot it. Lissa asks Lucina what's wrong, to which Lucina notices the great skull and revealing she saw it once before--at Emmeryn's execution and even then it reminded her of Grima (Lucina revealing this after Chrom asks who the skull belongs to). Lucina states a cataclysmic war ushered his return, then reveals it's said Grima fed upon the souls of the fallen before turning upon the living.

(Cutscene: "Dire Future II") We cut to the future as it originally transpired, where we witness Lucina draw the Parallel Falchion and turns it against a Risen. Numerous soldiers are depicted fighting numerous Risen as an explosion rocks the area, barely missing Lucina. Cutting away to a fiery exterior, a large, shadowy figure can be seen emerging along the skyline. As Lucina gets her bearings, an ominous voice declares the end of the human race--the future is built upon the past, but humans shall never see the future. A few red lights appear to Lucina as the ominous voice tells Lucina her mother and father are dead; as Lucina panics, detail emerges onto the shadowy figure as its ominous voice tells Lucina it is her turn to die. The giant creature lunges toward Lucina as she screams in fear.

Back in the current timeline, Lucina says she cannot reveal whether these are Grima's true bones or simply an effigy, but Lucina says she knows they cannot let it come back to life; Chrom promies Lucina that they will succeed, as the future can be changed and she's proven it already, and with the Shepherds together, they can turn the course of history. Lucina says she wants to believe Chrom more than anything.

Inside Plegia Castle, Chrom, Robin, and Lucina arrive on the scene; Robin begins whispering to Chrom, to which Chrom deduces there's trouble and Robin reveals he/she saw armed soldiers hiding in the shadows as they were shown in. Chrom reveals it appears they have their answer already. Validar and Aversa arrive on the scene, to which Validar welcomes Chrom; Chrom reveals he was told Validar had something he wished to give him, to which Validar asks if Chrom has no time for courtesy. Validar asks Chrom if he wants the object that badly, revealing it concerns him; Validar then states that the Gemstones and the Fire Emblem can be treacherous artifacts, a fact Plegia and the Grimleal sadly know all too well. Lucina asks Validar if he speaks ill of when the first exalt used the artifacts against Grima, to which Validar confirms then declares the Shepherds intruders; after a shocked reaction from Lucina, Validar reveals the Shepherds are not supposed to be in this area and must be destroyed, to which Chrom also gives a shocked reaction. Validar asks Chrom to give him the Fire Emblem; Lucina reveals that Validar has made a declaration of war. Validar reveals he will ask only one more time and again asks Chrom to hand over the Fire Emblem immediately; Chrom says he never will, to which Validar declares the parley over and asks his guards to seize the Shepherds. Chrom reveals things are going down just as he thought; Robin calls Chrom over toward him/her and asks him to hurry, to which Chrom, Robin, and Lucina leave the scene. Aversa notes Robin had an escape route all planned out, a clever action to which Validar should be proud; Validar states that if Robin had half Validar's wits, he/she would know the Shepherds have already lost. Preparations take place at this point.

Once preparations are finished, Chrom reveals that the Shepherds have to get out of the area right then and there, and tells them to cut down anyone who gets in their way. The Plegian general assigned to the task of stopping the Shepherds, Algol, tells his troops to signal the men in hiding and give the "Ylissean scum" no quarter. The battle begins at this point. Algol signalled oncoming reinforcements prior to the start of the battle; they begin to arrive after two full turns of combat.

Once the battle ends, Chrom, Robin, and Lucina continue their escape; Chrom reveals they're almost there, the exit is nearby. Chrom then asks the others to wait and asks them if he feels something; Validar warps onto the scene and attacks Chrom to the point of visible injury. Validar tells Chrom that the Shepherds can run all they like, but they can't escape fate and asks the Shepherds if they know that; Lucina shows worry for Chrom, after which Validar asks that Chrom either give him the Fire Emblem or have it taken from him, to which Chrom asks Validar to try. Validar says he won't need to do anything; he calls out to Robin, who then has a headache. Chrom shows worry for Robin, to which Validar commands him/her to seize the Fire Emblem and give it to him; Robin continues to try to fight his/her headache, and in a moment of intensity, the scene is bathed in white light. Chrom asks Robin what he/she is doing.

The scene cuts to a depiction of the Fire Emblem, where the final Gemstone, Sable, is set into it, thus completing it. Validar congratulates Robin as the Fire Emblem finally belongs to him, and with his Gemstone, it is complete; all that remains is to set the Dragon's Table and perform the rite.

The scene shifts back to the castle hallway, where Validar has already left the scene; Chrom curses out Validar and shows signs of his injury, while Robin, recovering from his/her headache, asks what he/she has done, to which Chrom tells Robin they must flee. Robin apologizes and says he/she doesn't know what came over him/her; Chrom tells Robin that they need to focus on leaving the area right then and there, to which Robin says he/she understands. The player may save their game at this point.

Chrom, Robin, Lucina, and Frederick have gathered in a Plegia Castle hallway. Robin reveals that what he/she did is unforgivable; Chrom tells Robin to save his/her energy for helping the Shepherds track him down. Robin insists Chrom leave him/her behind since Validar could use him/her again and that he/she can't be trusted; Robin then states that the cursed blood in him/her must somehow give Validar dominion over him/her, to which Chrom states Validar never had full control and tells Robin he/she can fight it--if Validar expects Robin to blindly obey, that might be the surprise the Shepherds need. Robin tells Chrom he puts too much faith in him/her; Frederick tells Robin to not give up now, to which Robin tells him he's not listening. Chrom reveals that the deed is done, but Robin can still try to undo the damage and that it's not too late, to which Robin says he/she will try. Lucina briefly thinks things over.

Outside Plegia Castle, Robin walks onto the scene, followed by Lucina. Lucina asks Robin if she can have a word; she reveals that it's about Chrom, that she has memories of him from when she was young before he died. Lucina reveals the Chrom she knew was courageous and kind, everyone spoke fondly of him, people said he was brave until the very end. Lucina says she yearned to know Chrom better, and now that she does she can see that the world will be robbed of a very great man--and she will not allow that to happen. Robin says he/she understands and that everybody loves Chrom, to which Lucina tells him/her to forgive her; she then draws the Parallel Falchion (even if she has been reclassed into a class incapable of using swords) and points it at Robin. Robin is shocked at Lucina's actions, to which Lucina asks Robin to stay where he/she is--she has no choice, she must kill Robin. Robin asks what madness is going on, to which Lucina reveals that in her original future, he/she is Chrom's murderer; Robin says that's insane and asks why he/she would kill Chrom, to which Lucina reveals she wasn't certain herself until right then and there. Lucina reveals she knew Chrom had been killed by his closest friend; having witnessed his bond with Robin, Lucina doubted Robin was Chrom's murderer until that day's events made it clear--Robin is at Validar's mercy. Lucina reveals she suspects he forces Robin to kill Chrom and very soon; Robin asks Lucina to wait, to which Lucina states that, if Chrom is right, that they can change their fates. If her dark future is to be averted, sacrifices must be made, to which Lucina apologizes to Robin--she knows this is murder. Robin attempts to talk Lucina out of her action, to which Lucina asks Robin not to make it harder--if he/she doesn't resist, his/her death will be swift and painless, and if Robin holds any love for Chrom, then he/she should let this deed be done. The player is given the option whether or not to accept Lucina's judgement. If the player refuses, Robin says he/she does love Chrom but he/she cannot just let Lucina kill him/her; Lucina says she understands and asks Robin to draw his/her weapon, battle shall have the final judgement. If the player accepts, Robin says he/she forfeits his/her life, to which Lucina wishes him/her godspeed. Chrom arrives on the scene and calls out to Robin and Lucina; Lucina attempts to explain the situation to Chrom, to which Chrom asks Lucina to lower her sword. Lucina again attempts to explain, to which Chrom again asks Lucina to lower her sword, more harsly this time, Lucina finally doing so after this. Lucina says she can explain things; Chrom reveals there's no need, that Lucina is not the only one who can eavesdrop--he himself heard every word. Chrom tells Lucina that he knows her heart is in the right place, but that he trusts Robin, and that Lucina cannot shake his faith in him/her; Lucina says this isn't about trust, that Robin will be the death of Chrom. Chrom reveals that he and Robin have held fast through good times and ill, that they swore to be two halves of a greater whole, and that Lucina underestimates the strength of the bonds they share and he believes in them more than some foretold "destiny"; Lucina states that's easier to say when he hasn't seen it himself, to which Chrom asks Lucina if their ties aren't stronger now than they were in her original future--something Lucina said herself, that they're bound tighter than ever in this flow of time, and not merely as father and daughter but as friends. Chrom states they can change things--they already have and they will again, to which Lucina accepts; Lucina says she'd ask Robin for his/her forgiveness, but cannot expect it, to which Robin says he/she does forgive Lucina and that they needn't speak of this incident again. Lucina states that she trusts both Chrom and Robin to prove her wrong, and that this future would fall to pieces before their bonds ever would. (There are some differences in these events should Robin be Lucina's husband or mother.)

Summary

Instead of handing over the Gemstone, Validar manipulates Robin to steal the Fire Emblem. The Ylisseans barely escape the castle alive.

Trivia

  • This chapter is one of few chapters in the game where the preparations theme doesn't play during that phase of setup. In this case, the music from the preceding cutscene continues onto the battle preparations screen.
  • Plegia Castle is one of five locations on the world map that connects to only one other location (in this case, only to Plegia Castle Courtyard), and as such is a dead end. The other four are the Outrealm Gate, Law's End, Warriors' Tomb, and Grima.
