Fire Emblem: Kakusei (ファイアーエムブレム覚醒, Faiaa Emuburemu Kakusei),[3] literally "Fire Emblem: Awakening", is the latest announced Fire Emblem game, being made for the Nintendo 3DS. The game is set to be released in Japan on April 19, 2012,[3] with a release in Europe on a later date in 2012. The game takes place on an as-of-yet unknown continent, featuring Krom, the prince of Iris. [5]

Story

Fire Emblem: Kakusei features Krom, the sword-wielding prince of Iris. Little is known about the story specifically; however, an advertisement in Jump magazine includes the following English text:

Two sleeping dragons - one a sacred ally of mankind, the other its sworn destroyer. Two heroes marked with symbols of the dragons. Their meeting heralds the dragons' awakening - and the world's ending.
— Jump advertisement[6]

Characters

  • Note: Most of the class information is speculatory, although the characters' appearances in the trailer videos fit the classes well.
  • Krom (クロム, Kuromu) - The main character, who wields the Sealed Sword Falchion.
  • My Unit - a customizable unit representing the player. A main character. (Jase and Rufure are sample names used in previews)[6]
  • Liz (リズ, Rizu) - A playable character who may be Krom's sister.
  • Vake (ヴェイク, Veiku) - A character who wields axes.
  • Frederick (フレデリク, Furederiku) - The pre-promoted paladin of the game.
  • Ronku (ロンクー, Ronkuu) - A male sword user with the Astra skill.
  • Emelina (エメリナ, Emerina) - A character who talks to Krom.
  • Sumia (スミア, Sumia) - A pegasus knight.
  • Gaia (ガイア, Gaia) - A male who wields swords.
  • Sol- The green cavalier.
  • Soiree- The red cavalier.
  • Cullum- A possible knight.
  • Geriba- Appears to be a bandit boss.

Unnamed characters

  • An brown-haired adult male, who wears armor and uses swords.
  • A fire mage.
  • A young black-haired female mage.
  • A small blonde girl.
  • A masked character resembling Marth.

Gameplay

  • The Free Map system, similar to the world map of Gaiden and The Sacred Stones, allows the player to walk across the map to different locations to battle or shop.
  • A new included feature called "dual system" activates when a character attacks an enemy unit and an ally is besides them. This mode powers up the abilities of the attacking unit as well as the ally unit helping with attacks.[6]
  • Just as in Shin Monshou no Nazo, the My Unit concept is used again - a customizable main character, representing the player and playing a large part in the story.
  • Also returning from the directly previous game is the option to turn of the permanency of character death. This is most likely included to attract newer players.

Pre-release information

Fire Emblem: Kakusei was announced only briefly on September 13, 2011 at Nintendo's 3DS Conference in Japan, then known only as Fire Emblem 3DS. Two videos were released on the official website. It was noted by IGN staff that its graphics look better than Radiant Dawn for the Wii.[7] In addition, one new feature of the game will be two-on-one battles.[8] The game will feature the return of a world map for traveling between the different towns and purchasing items, something that has not appeared since The Sacred Stones.

According to the Japanese Nikkei newspaper, Kakusei will be the first Nintendo game to offer paid downloadable content, allowing the purchase of additional content through credit cards or prepaid cards, each for several hundred yen.[9][10]

A third trailer was released during the December 27 Nintendo Direct press conference. Although the segment was less than two minutes long (running from roughly 34:25 to 36:08), many new pieces of information were acquired. Most importantly, a title, Fire Emblem: Kakusei, and a Japanese release date, April 19, 2011, were revealed. New characters were revealed, along with the fact that every character appears to be voiced, a first for the series. Several former games are mentioned in the video: Gaiden and Seima no Kōseki, in reference to the traversable world map, and Seisen no Keifu, Thracia 776, Seima no Kōseki, Sōen no Kiseki, and Akatsuki no Megami, in reference to the skill system. The skill system in this game will be more open than in previous games, and skills can be rearranged with more freedom than in the past.[3]

New magazine advertisements soon appeared in February 2012, the first in Japanese magazine Jump on February 10. A section of English text describing the game's story and confirmation on several details, such as the free map and the title, were included. Quite notable was the announcement of the My Unit concept reappearing in Kakusei - a customizable main character to represent the player. Next, on February 14, a large feature was published in Famitsu, Japanese gaming magazine, revealing many plot details, especially about Krom, Liz, and My Unit.

On April 21, during a Nintendo Direct broadcast, Kakusei was confirmed for release in Europe, sometime in 2012. Additionally, a new trailer was released, showing off voice-acting during battles and a transformation, similar to that of a tiger laguz.[4] DLC for Japan was confirmed to be free until the end of May as well.[11]
