Fire Emblem: Dark Dragon and Sword of Light Fire (ファイアーエムブレム 暗黒竜と光の剣 Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi) is the first game in the Fire Emblem video game series. It was released in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, only in Japan. It tells the story of Marth, the prince of Altea, on his quest to save the continent of Akaneia from the Shadow Dragon Medeus, who has been resurrected.
As the first Fire Emblem game, Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi introduced most of the gameplay concepts present in the rest of the series. Some examples are the turn-based gameplay, unit classes, and permanent death.
Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi was never localized outside of Japan, but a two-episode OVA, Marth's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and the worldwide release of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon are all results of this game.
