Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow (Japanese: ファイアーエムブレム新・紋章の謎〜光と影の英雄〜 Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow) is the second Fire Emblem remake for the Nintendo DS system, following after Shadow Dragon. It is a remake of Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem, the third Fire Emblem game to have been made.

Plot

One year after the War of Shadows between the Archanean League, led by Prince Marth of Altea, and the Dolhr Empire led by the Shadow Dragon Medeus, an imperial edict from Hardin, recently crowned Emperor of Archanea, arrives at Altea Castle, ordering Marth to lead his army to Grust to subdue a rebellion occuring there. Although Marth has his doubts about this order, he is forced to comply with the orders of his suzerain nation, and leaves for Grust.

Gameplay

New Mystery of the Emblem marks the first appearance of "Casual Mode", a gameplay mode in which units who are defeated in battle are not actually killed, but simply retreat from battle to recover in time for the next chapter. It also marks the first appearance of unit barracks, where random items are gifted after a certain amount of time

Characters

Main article: List of characters in Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow

With a total of 81 playable characters, New Mystery of the Emblem has the largest playable cast in the entire Fire Emblem series. New Mystery of the Emblem introduces Kris, a character whose name, appearance, class and gender can be customised by the player. Although this is not the first instance of a player-created character being directly involved in the game's plot, it is the first time said character is available as a controllable unit.

Chapters

Main article: List of chapters in Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow

New Mystery of the Emblem features eight prologue chapters, used to develop Kris's fighting skill and relationship with Marth, 24 main story chapters, six sidequest chapters, and three downloadable chapters, available from the extras menu, that take place before the prologue chapters of the game. Unlike in Shadow Dragon, the sidequests' availability is not determined by the number of units in the player's army, and so it is possible to recruit, and keep alive, all 77 possible playable characters in a single playthrough.

Fan translation

Main article: Fan translation § Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Upon the game's initial release in Japan a simple menu translation was created by fans.

After a year of the game's Japanese release and no word of a localization from official sources a full fan translation begun production. Said translation is textually complete, though it has not been updated to accommodate recent localization developments from Fire Emblem Awakening or Fire Emblem Heroes.
