Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu (ファイアーエムブレム 聖戦の系譜, Faiaa Emuburemu Seisen no Keifu, literally Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War) is the fourth game installment in the Fire Emblem series, and the second on the Super Famicom. This game is the first of the series that takes place in a place with no connections to the previous games, the continent of Jugdral.

Seisen no Keifu is split up into two halves, separated by the timespan of a generation. In the first generation, Lord Siglud sets to fight off an invasion of the Kingdom of Verdane, but is rapidly involved in the events leading to the creation of the Grandbell Empire - the same tyranny fought by his son, Celice, in the second generation.

Gameplay

The fourth game in the series revamped the gameplay and brought into play some of the franchise' most iconic features, while having some unique elements as well.

  • Two generations in one game:
  • Chapters:
  • Classes:
  • Holy blood and holy weapons: The legacy of the Twelve Crusaders. Holy blood can enhance different stats and weapon ranks.

Characters with minor blood receive the standard stats bonus and one more level to its weapon, while characters with major blood are gifted with double bonuses and a * rank in the Crusader's weapon.

Example: Azel, a mage, starts with C in thunder and wind but B in fire because of his minor Fala blood; without it, he would have had C in the three, as all other mages. He also receives a increment of 20% to his HP growth rate and of 30% to the Magic growth rate.

Holy weapons are the equipment used by the Twelve Crusaders in the Holy War. Each lineage guards one, and only the crusaders' descendants who have fully inherited their blood can wield them - one per generation. These weapons are vastly more powerful than normal weapons, but their maintenance is expensive.

  • Love and children:
  • Skills: These are abilities that can change the course of a battle. They are classified into two groups, albeit some of them, such as Pursuit, can be in both.
Personal skills: These are skills that are inherent in some units. They can be passed down to children.
Example: Tailto, a Thunder Mage, has Wrath as a personal skill. No other units of that class have such skill in the first generation.
Soldier skills: These abilities are present in all units of the class. They cannot be inherited.
Example: All generals, barons and emperors have Big Shield, which gives the ability to receive no damage from the enemy's attack.

These abilities are a factor to be taken into account when battling, as they give the characters an edge over their opponents - skills are not limited to playable characters.

Skills can also be passed down; the children will have both parents' personal skills. The only exception to this rule are the sword-related skills: Shooting Star Sword, Sun Sword, and Moon Sword, which can only be inherited by non-mounted, sword-wielding children.

  • Weapons: Most weapons in Seisen no Keifu have a durability of fifty uses. After that, they broken, but the remnants do not disappear as in other games. The weapon can be fully repaired in allied castles. On the other hand, their availability is very limited; there are not many of each type, and only some bosses give one when defeated.

A new aspect of weapons in this game is weapon kills, which corresponds to the amount of enemies defeated with that weapon. Once it reaches 50, the weapon gains the Critical skill. For each killing after the fiftieth, the bonus increases*.

  • Weapon triangle: Now a staple of the series, this was the first game to implement it. In essence, whenever a unit attacks, the game gives a bonus of 20 to accuracy if the weapon bests the enemy's choice. Should the opposite situation be true, though, the unit receives a penalty of 20 to accuracy.
    There are two weapon triangles:
Physical weapons: Swords best axes, axes triumph over lances, and lances are strong against swords.
Tomes: Fire magic is strong against wind spells, wind magic bests thunder spells, and thunder magic wins over fire magic.

Bows, light and dark magic are excluded from these triangles. Bows fares the same against all weapons, but is effective against flying units, while light and dark magic are strong against fire, wind and thunder.

Characters

Main article: List of characters in Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War features one of the shortest but most complex list of playable characters in the series. This is due to the female characters from the first generation (excepting Diadora and Ethlin) being able to fall in love with men from Siglud's army and bear two children, who then will conform Celice's army in the second generation. As long as they fall in love and remain alive until the end of Siglud's story, their children will be available in the second half; otherwise, they will be replaced with other characters.

This is one of the main factors in Seisen no Keifu's replayability; since the women can be paired with almost any men, who heavily influence the children, units in the second generation are quite variable. Children's growth rates depend on who their parents are, and they inherit the inventory and holy blood as well. On the other side, the substitute characters have set stats and no holy blood bonuses (except for Amid and Linda, who have minor Tordo blood), and are thus viewed as 'inferior' to their counterparts.

The following table shows the mothers, the children and the replacement characters:
