This page is about the axe-wielding class. For the personal class belonging to Alm, see Fighter (Gaiden).

Fighter

Proficient with the axe, bow, and gauntlets, the Fighter has high strength that translates to mighty blows.

The Fighter (Japanese: 戦士 Fighter, or アクスファイター Axe Fighter) is a basic class which debuted in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and is present in some form in every game in the Fire Emblem series, if Alm's personal class of the same name is counted. In almost every appearance it makes it is a common infantry class which exclusively wields axes (and in the case of Alm's personal class it is instead a sword-wielding class). In Three Houses, this class also specialises in bows and gauntlets.

Conventional fighters are defined by their immense strength, also possessing significant HP. However, their other defensive stats are lacking in comparison to other classes (including a typically weak resistance stat for a physical unit), usually causing them to be somewhat frail despite the relative longevity afforded by their sheer amount of HP. Furthermore, they are crippled by subpar skill and speed, which combined with the low hit and high weight of axes gives fighters rather poor accuracy and dodging abilities among many other classes (also making them poor in the doubling department). Fighters are very much oriented toward front-line combat, and provided they receive healing support from forts or a healing ally, they tend to survive well. Compared to their spiritual counterparts, the "criminal" axe-wielding Pirate/Brigand/Barbarian/Bandit, fighters are often weaker options with lower HP and speed, but they fare better in regards to skill, luck, defense, and resistance. In Fates, the class undergoes a change in statistics in which they still possess great HP and strength (now unmatched by any other), but in this new iteration they possess high skill—a rarity for axe units, and high speed much like their "criminal" counterparts, but their defense suffers more than usual and their resistance is even worse, coupled with a low luck growth that hampers their hit rate, avoid rate, and critical evasion. Compared to the newly introduced Oni Savage of Hoshido, they are superior in strength, skill, speed, and luck, but inferior in magic, defense, and resistance.

Originally in the NES Shadow Dragon and Mystery of the Emblem, fighters are incapable of promotion, which was later changed in the remakes of the games. Genealogy of the Holy War introduced the Warrior as the de facto promotion option of the fighter class, which persisted throughout much of the rest of the series, save Thracia 776, in which fighters instead promote into the Mercenary class. In The Sacred Stones and Awakening, which feature multiple class change options, fighters have the choice of promoting to their normal advanced option of the Warrior, or the Mercenary's normal advanced option of the Hero; additionally, in the former, fighters themselves are one of the base promotion options for the trainee Journeyman class, the other being the longtime alternative to the Figher class, Pirate. In Fates, the Berserker replaces the Warrior as the fighter's primary promotion option thanks to the lack of a "criminal" axe-wielding class such as the aforementioned Pirates, Brigands, and other similar classes.
