— Emmeryn's last words
|
Emmeryn (Japanese: 聖王エメリナ Holy Queen Emerina) is the ninth chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. In this chapter, the Shepherds arrive at Plegia Castle with the goal of rescuing their abducted exalt before the Plegians execute her. Events take an unexpected turn after the end of the main skirmish.
In addition to next chapter in the storyline, completing this chapter will also unlock the fourth paralogue chapter.
Plot
- Main article: Emmeryn (chapter)/Script
Inside Plegia Castle, a soldier reports to Gangrel and Aversa that they could not ascertain whether the Fire Emblem or Chrom was among the Ylissean force. Aversa, displeased, kills the soldier. Gangrel suspects Chrom and the Fire Emblem are among the Ylisseans, and awaits their arrival. At the Shepherds' camp, a spy reports to Basilio that Emmeryn is to be executed at Plegia Castle the following day. The Shepherds harden their resolve, hopeful for tomorrow. Elsewhere, Validar informs Grima that with Emmeryn's execution, events are falling back on course. The morning of the execution, Robin wakes from a nightmare before being informed by Lissa that it is time to march. At Plegia Castle Emmeryn and a Plegian soldier are situated at the end of a stone plank. Gangrel emerges and delivers a speech to the Plegians before ordering the executioner to kill Emmeryn. Flavia throws an axe at the soldier, knocking him off the plank before he can kill Emmeryn.
As the battle begins, Chrom orders that the soldiers be prioritized and Gangrel will be dealt with later; Gangrel orders his men kill all of the Ylisseans as he and Aversa leave. One of the Plegian dark mages, Tharja, responds to the orders apathetically. An Ylissean war monk, Libra, rushes to intervene in Emmeryn's execution. The commander of the Plegian fighters, Campari, orders a wyvern brigade to cut off the Ylissean escape.
During the battle, Libra recognizes Chrom as Emmeryn's brother and prince of Ylisse, and joins the Shepherds. Chrom mistakes Libra for a woman, though Libra quickly corrects him. Chrom also recognizes that Tharja is reluctant to fight; she explains that she is not driven by loyalty to Plegia and Gangrel, and joins the Shepherds following an invitation from Chrom.
Once the battle ends, Chrom signals for Phila and her pegasus knights to enter the battle and save Emmeryn. Aversa summons Risen archers, who kill Phila and the knights. Gangrel then taunts Chrom and the shepherds before offering an ultimatum: he will let Emmeryn live in exchange for the Fire Emblem. Emmeryn asks Gangrel to listen to reason, but when he is unresponsive, she decides to sacrifice herself rather than force Chrom make a choice; despite his pleas, Emmeryn lets herself fall off the high perch. Chrom, enraged, threatens to kill Gangrel, but Basilio convinces him that they must escape. Marth laments that she arrived too late, and Emmeryn's death sets the world back on course to a bleak future.
Summary
The rescue fails, and Chrom is forced to choose between the Fire Emblem and his sister. To spare him and the world further conflict, Emmeryn ends her life.

Trivia
- Gangrel and Aversa are on the map during the battle preparations phase, but leave before the start of turn 1. Gangrel uses the wrong help text for this part of the game (it makes sense for his appearance in paralogue 18) and his movement is disabled here, but otherwises uses the exact setup he will use in chapter 11, right down to the Dragonstone he will drop in that chapter (he is not set to drop it here). Aside from having no Goddess Icon in her inventory, Aversa uses the exact setup she will use in chapter 22.
- Aversa's significant statistical advantage over Gangrel foreshadows her having a more important role in the overall story than Gangrel.
