It's not that simple...I know what the Nohrian kingdom has done to Hoshido is unforgivable...And I know now that these are not my brothers and sisters by birth...Yet even still, I must side with them. My heart won’t allow me to do otherwise.

— Corrin, reasoning for their decision of backing Nohr
|
Embrace the Dark (Japanese: 闇へと進みゆく Advancing into the Darkness) is the sixth chapter of the Conquest campaign in Fire Emblem Fates. In this chapter, Corrin has made his/her fateful decision to take the Nohrian side of the family's squabble and side with the people he/she grew up knowing as his/her siblings, and thus must face off against his/her (apparent) blood siblings.
Plot
- Main article: Embrace the Dark/Script
- The below plot corresponds to the use of a male Corrin. If you refresh this page, it is possible to get an alternate reading using a variation instead.
Continuing from Corrin's decision having chosen to side with Nohr, he tells Ryoma to withdraw his troops and tells him he will not fight for Hoshido; Ryoma, attempting to paint the Nohrians as vile fiends who wish to trample Hoshido, state that the Nohrians killed their mother, to which Corrin states he knows the atrocities Nohr committed are unforgivable and that the Nohrian royalty aren't his siblings by birth, but his heart wouldn't let him side with Hoshido. As Ryoma attempts to convince Corrin that he is mistaken while Xander expresses his gratitude toward Corrin, Ryoma brings up the events in the Shirasagi castle plaza and particularly Garon's role in them, to which Corrin states that he needs to hear Garon's side of the story, and thus needs to return to Krakenberg to learn the truth of the tragedy in Shirasagi. Ryoma states that he will not allow Corrin to return to Nohr and starts attacking him, with Xander jumping into the fray to protect Corrin; as Corrin attempts to stop the fight, Leo brings up that they have no choice but to fight—retreating will make it appear that Corrin was coerced into siding with Nohr. As Leo, Camilla, and Elise make their pitch toward Corrin into fighting, Ryoma calls Hinoka, Takumi, and Sakura into action, after which Xander calls Camilla, Leo, and Elise into action.
Right before the battle begins, Felicia runs onto the battlefield, stating that she's relieved to see Corrin alive, after which Corrin asks Felicia what she's doing in the area; Felicia states that she's been searching for Corrin after they got separated at the Bottomless Canyon—she got lost a little and then tripped and hit her head, so it took awhile for her to reach Corrin, then tells him that what's important is that she's now present and ready to lend a hand. The battle begins at this point.
Once the battle ends, Corrin asks Ryoma and the other Hoshidan siblings to find it in their hearts to forgive him, as her decision may appear to be the ultimate betrayal but he's trying to end the war for everyone's sakes; Corrin and Azura then talk about the decision, after which Azura bids Corrin farewell, hoping that they'll cross paths again. The intro cutscene to the Conquest campaign, "Nohr Intro", plays at this point, followed by the tutorial and formal introduction to the My Castle concept.
Summary
Nohrian and Hoshidan royals clash blades on the battlefield. Corrin is torn between both kingdoms but finally makes a fateful decision...

Your starting lineup for the Conquest route consists solely of either Felicia or Jakob. Felicia is a basic healer—she's fairly solid as a Maid due to her good magic, which makes her a prime candidate for the Flame Shuriken and the Bifröst. Jakob, on the other hand, leans toward being a brawler. He is very useful when reclassed to a combat-oriented class such as a Paladin. As for your Avatar, great care will need to be taken in their creation due to Conquest's higher difficulty. Far and away the best Avatar build for Conquest is a female with the Wyvern Rider class for three reasons: you can complete Chapter 8 without triggering any reinforcements if the Avatar has a mount, Jakob becomes very powerful as a Wyvern Lord, and both of you can get Swordbreaker, which really helps with the two difficult fights with Ryoma that lie ahead. Another good option is a Samurai talent; this gives Corrin Swordfaire and Life and Death, which significantly improve their damage output with the Yato. You are also given control of the Nohrian siblings, but they cannot gain experience. Try not to give them too many kills.
Xander should immediately move into the nearby forest. His role for this battle will be to occupy Ryoma in a duel while you take out the other enemies, so don't bother having him initiate combat with Ryoma. Leo should move into Hinoka/Takumi's range while the others regroup with him. Takumi will then attack Leo and be severely wounded. On turn 2, have the Avatar finish Takumi. Then have Leo wound Hinoka and Felicia/Jakob finish her. On turn 3, move Felicia/Jakob into Yukimura's range and have him/her heal Leo, and move the Avatar next to him/her so s/he can Dual Strike Yukimura. On turn 4, have the Avatar finish Yukimura. At this point, the battle is won. You may not want to beat up a defenseless Shrine Maiden, but you really need the experience and the alternative is defeating Ryoma.
Trivia
- Of the three versions of chapter 6 in Fates, this is the only version where a non-generic character who did not appear in any of the chapter cutscenes, in this case Yukimura, is fought as an enemy.
- On a Birthright cartridge, the game cannot proceed past this point without the player purchasing and downloading the Conquest campaign as DLC.
