“ | Nergal! I will defeat you! Here! Today!! But...even now, there is no hatred in my heart. You who were born human, you who lost the heart that defines your humanity... For you, I have nothing but pity. | ” | — Eliwood, in the Final Chapter of Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. |
---|
Eliwood (Japanese: エリウッド Eliwod) is the father of Roy and is a member of Pherae's ruling monarchy. While he first has a minor role in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade and is responsible for making his son Roy head of the Lycian Army, Eliwood becomes one of three main characters in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, and his backstory and character are more deeply looked into in this game.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
Pre-game
Little is said of Eliwood's past in this game, owing to his relatively small part in the game's story; despite this, his former mentor Marcus does shed some light on Eliwood's past in supports with Lilina. According to Marcus, Eliwood was once considered one of the greatest knights in all of Lycia, a description that also matches Roy; most of Marcus's stories, however, concern his romantic life. In these cases, Eliwood was said to be a kind and caring husband to his equally kind and caring wife; a particularly notable event took place just prior to their engagement, where Eliwood once left for three days in order to return with a rare flower that only grows in Ilia.
In-game
Eliwood appears near the start of the game with Lilina in his castle; although he intends to ride out in order to fight nearby bandits and prevent them from raiding towns, his illness prevents him from doing so, and he places his son Roy in trust of some members of Pherae's army to drive off the bandits. As news comes that Bern under Prince Zephiel has taken over both Ilia and Sacae, and has plans to invade Lycia, Eliwood elects to send his healthy son in place of him; in addition, he hires some mercenaries led by Dieck to assist his son.
Post-game
It is unknown what Eliwood's exact fate at the end of the game is; while Roy does succeed him as Marquess Pherae, it is not stated whether or not Eliwood died of natural causes.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Eliwood can be used in the Trial Maps if the game is completed five times on any difficulty. He is considered one of the better Trial Maps exclusive characters, owing to his very high base stats; while he only caps strength, all of his other stats are acceptable for his level, and he also starts off with rather good weapon levels. Adding to this, Eliwood's stats are sufficient enough to potentially outclass all six of the player's potential paladins, a useful trait among bonus characters. Eliwood's main two flaws are his HP and his resistance; neither are very high for his level or class, and as such, Eliwood should stay out of reach of mages and similar classes.
Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
Role
Pre-game
More is elaborated on Eliwood's past in this game than the previous, owing to him being a playable character. Eliwood is born in Pherae and is the son of Elbert and Eleanora, thus making him the immediate successor of the house if the current Marquess should fall. Eliwood is also stated to have met Hector at a young age in a meeting of Lycian Lords; the two become fast friends, and in a warrior's custom, the children were ordered by Erik, son of the marquess of Laus, to cut their hands and shake with another; Eliwood and Hector chose each other, showing how close the two have become. [6]
In-game
Eliwood first appears in Chapter 7 of Lyn's tale, Siblings Abroad. Eliwood was initially passing through Khathelet in order to meet Hector for their monthly duel. While passing on through, however, he stumbles across the Black Fang and their attempts to accost the siblings Ninian and Nils; as a knight, Eliwood elects to engage some of these warriors while, unbeknownst to him, Lyn also performs her own assault on the group. When coming across an old castle that Nils and Lyn suspect Ninian is being hid in, Eliwood makes his first appearance to Lyn, while holding an unconscious Ninian in his arms. After quickly introducing himself as Marquess Pherae's son, he quickly learns of Lyn's quest to prove herself as the true heir to Caelin and though he offers some assistance, she politely refuses his offer, under the claim that the fight against Lundgren should be her own.
A few days later, Lyn returns to Eliwood, asking for his help due to Lyn and her partners Sain and Kent being depicted as impostors to the throne; Eliwood complies by making all houses in Lycia neutral to the issue, thus preventing anyone in Lycia from helping Lundgren or Lyn. Eliwood then leaves, with Lyn thanking him for his help.
One year after the assassination of Lundgren and Lyn's subsesquent reunion with her grandfather, Eliwood's own tale starts. Amid the disappearance of his father and resulting rumours of his death, Eliwood elects to venture out into other territories of Lycia in order to find him. Assisted by his mentor Marcus, a knight in service of Pherae Lowen, a villager with archery skills Rebecca, two contracted warriors Bartre and Dorcas, and a tactician he has previously met, Mark, Eliwood starts off by first venturing towards Santaruz to speak with Lord Helman. On the way, however, he is stopped by a bandit named Zagan; although he is quickly overwhelmed by his opposition, his friend Hector and his own mentor Oswin come in to save Eliwood at just the right time. After repelling the attack, Eliwood continues to Santaruz, only to find a dying Helman who tells him to "beware the Black Fang". Upon hearing more rumours about the sudden change in temperament of Marquess Laus, Darin, Eliwood continues to Laus with his allies to see if he knows anything about Elbert's disappearance; while he is initially attacked by Laus forces headed by his former classmate Erik, Eliwood repels the attack. To everyone's surprise, however, Darin is nowhere to be found inside the castle. Only a short time after this attack, it is announced that Laus has attacked Caelin, and as such, Eliwood hurries there to save both Lyn and Marquess Caelin, Hausen.
Eliwood is successful in repelling the invasion and saving both Lyn and Hausen, but despite this victory, Darin is still nowhere to be found; initially unsure of what to do next, an Ostian spy named Leila appears before him and Hector as to give intelligence on the Black Fang. From here, Eliwood learns that not only his father alive, but he also learns of the Black Fang's true intentions, their past, their current leader Nergal, and how Elbert was forcibly accosted by the group onto the Dread Isle. After finding some aid from the Davros pirates, headed by Captain Fargus, Eliwood's group ends up encountering a boat drifting off the coast of the island; inside that boat is none other than the dancer Eliwood rescued a year before, Ninian, but with amnesia.
Eliwood fights his way through the Dread Isle; along the way, he comes across the first sympathetic figure of the group, Uhai, an operative from Sacae who elects to fight with honour. Just before raiding the Dragon's Gate, however, Ninian is also kidnapped from him by the mysterious Ephidel, who orchestrated many of the events that led to the current state of affairs in Lycia. After raiding the Dragon's Gate and killing a delusional Darin, Eliwood and his friends eventually locate his father, alive but shaken. The reunion, however, is cut short; after seeing the face of his father's captor, Nergal, for the first time, Ninian is found in a confused trance, and despite their best attempts to snap her out of her daze, she ends up opening the Dragon's Gate. While Nils does eventually break her trance and causes the gate to collapse in on itself and the death of Ephidel, Nergal still is able to kill Elbert by harvesting his quintessence; even with this, however, Elbert delivers one final act of rebellion against Nergal by almost fatally stabbing him. While the wound does not kill him, it ends up delaying Nergal from immediately opening up the Dragon's Gate again; Elbert himself dies in Eliwood's arms, telling him to continue to oppose Nergal.
Shaken by his death and by the revelation that Nergal intends to bring Dragons back into the world, Eliwood and his comrades decide to seek aid from Hector's older brother, Marquess Ostia Uther. While Uther is unable to provide direct aid to the group, he points them to the Nabata desert to seek "the living legend". After saving the Mage General of Etruria, Pent from bandits in the desert, Eliwood meets Athos for the first time; after seeking his advice and learning more of Nergal's twisted past, Eliwood is sent home by Athos in order to continue fighting against the Black Fang. After spending a day to rest in Pherae, Eliwood travels to Bern in disguise in order to attack the headquarters of the Black Fang. In addition to slaying many of the members of the Black Fang, Eliwood ends up having to solve a problem in Bern's ruling class; Queen Hellene of Bern requests that Eliwood retrieve the Fire Emblem back from the Black Fang so that she may give him the passage to the Shrine of Seals, where the holy weapon Durandal is found. After retrieving the Emblem and stopping an assassination attempt on Prince Zephiel, Eliwood is granted passage to the Shrine and does retrieves the Durandal, but only shortly after Ninian is again kidnapped by Nergal; upon leaving the shrine with the weapon, Eliwood and his cadre come across an actual Ice Dragon. Against his will, the sword ends up attacking the Ice Dragon. While the group initially praises the action, Nergal appears to inform Eliwood that the dragon he just slayed was none other than Ninian, the very girl who he had saved in the past and had spent much time protecting.
Despite this tragedy, Eliwood continues forth, shaken even further by this death, but with a new resolve to stop Nergal. After repelling one last desperate attack from Nergal in Ostia, Eliwood returns to the Dread Isle, and faces off against Nergal for the last time. After defeating morphs of former Black Fang members, Eliwood fights against Nergal and after getting accused of being callous for moving on from Ninian's death so quickly, kills the druid. In his dying breaths, however, Nergal opens up the Dragon's Gate, hoping that the dragons will not only kill Eliwood, but destroy all of the world as revenge for not letting his dreams come true (these dreams are later revealed in Hector's tale). Initially facing impossible odds, Bramimond appears in the battle and with his powers, revives Ninian; using her powers as a communicator for the Dragon's Gate, she is able to slay two of the dragons, but she cannot handle the third one. As such, Eliwood and his army join together for one last battle to defeat the last dragon.
Post-game
In all cases, Eliwood returns home to Pherae and becomes its Marquess one year after; in addition, he says goodbye to Mark, claiming that they will meet again, as well as offering him the opportunity to be a godfather to his future child. This child is born years later, as a young boy named Roy; in the Extended Epilogue of the game, which takes place ten years after the final battle, Hector and Eliwood meet again to discuss the recent assassination of King Desmond of Bern, while their children Roy and Lilina become fast friends.
Depending on the player's actions, Eliwood can also be paired up with either Lyn, Ninian, or Fiora. In the formermost and lattermost cases, the two choose to leave their previous roles (successor of Caelin and member of Ilia's Pegasus Knights) in order to marry Eliwood. In Ninian's case, she elects to separate from her brother at his behest in the final moments of the campaign and lives in the human world with a drastically decreased lifespan. Regardless of the case, they become the mother of Roy, though this character dies shortly after childbirth.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Whereas Lyn focuses on skill and speed and Hector focuses on Strength and Defense, Eliwood does not specialize in any single stat and is intended to be a rather well-rounded warrior. While this means that Eliwood is not likely to fail in any stat, this also means he cannot specialize in any stat as well; adding to that Eliwood does not have any particularly high growths, it is also possible for some of his stats to be poor. Eliwood's early game is messy; he lacks Speed to double Fighters, the double effectiveness in The Blazing Blade really downplays his Rapier (besides, the Rapier is a valuable item for the Funds Ranking, though it is possible to do fine even if you consume it entirely), making him not very good in one rounding enemies, but he can really be helped by his good growths. He also can begin to improve his average stats with support options; Eliwood has among the most flexible support options in the game, with his support with Hector notably being one of fastest supports in the game.
Upon promotion, Eliwood gains a horse; while this has the effect of increasing his movement to 7 and gives him Canto in some circumstances, this also makes him vulnerable to weapons that are effective against cavalry, such as the Halberd. As such, players should take note of the weapons enemies wield before directly heading into combat with Eliwood. His weapon level is very good, as D in lances allow him to wield Javelins right away, giving him reliable 1-2 range he lacked before. It additionally will allow him to use utility lances such as the Killer Lance without very much weapon level grinding. He is also one of few promoted characters that can carry promoted Hector, which is valuable in Hector Mode. Promoting Eliwood can be in Hector Mode, however, detrimental to the Funds ranking, since the Heaven Seal is one of the most expensive items in the game. Eliwood wields the Durandal in the very last chapter of the game, however he loses so much speed (7 points of Speed) from it that can be hard to defeat some of the enemies in last chapter.
Overall, Eliwood can perform better in Hector Mode than in his own mode, since he doesn't need to Seize on Hector Mode and can be promoted early. His early game is generally bad, since he lacks a lot of offense, but if you are lucky with his level ups, he can become a good combat unit in the mid-to-late-game, as his mobility and ability to use Javelins after promotion is always helpful.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Eliwood is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Blazing Blade character set. Along with Sigurd and Hector, Eliwood is one of three lord characters to not have a paid DLC version of himself available.
Eliwood is also present as an enemy in the second and third installments of the Champions of Yore DLC series, the second and third installments of Smash Brethren, and the second and third installments of Rogues & Redeemers; he is additionally an ally in Rogues & Redeemers 1.
As with several other legacy characters in Awakening, there is a unique weapon named for Eliwood available through the Barracks or event tiles: Eliwood's Blade.

Personality and character
Eliwood is a very friendly and polite person who remains calm and helpful throughout conversations. He is quite casual and does not judge people at all; he looks at people for who they are and truly cares about all of the soldiers in the army. Eliwood himself states that he thinks of everyone in the group as an irreplaceable friend, regardless of gender, age, or social status.[7] Although he is of quite high standing, he often tells others not to treat him as a lord, but as an equal.[8] Eliwood often tries to be supportive to others' problems and tries to act as both a leader and a friend. On his journey, he is very determined to succeed, first to find his father and then to avenge his father's death.

- ↑ Hector: Well, everyone’s heard the stories. They all know it’s the warriors’ custom. Each cuts his own hands, then shakes hands with his brothers... What man wouldn’t want to do that? Only one had the guts to meet him, tough.
Eliwood: ...You know, back then, I’m proud I took your hand. We are friends, sharing a life-dream now, an ambition. When one is in danger, the other risks his life to protect him... That’s why you came, isn’t it? Because you remembered? - ↑ Eliwood: We are equals, fighting together for a common cause.
Eliwood: I like to think of everyone in this troop as a friend, regardless of standing, gender, or age. All are friends, and all are irreplaceable. - ↑ Eliwood: Please, don’t worry about formalities with me. We are equals, fighting together for a common cause.
Fiora: Equals... But, my lord...
