Eldigan (Japanese: {{ | Eldigan (Japanese: エルトシャン Eltshan), also known by the title Eldigan, the Lionheart (Japanese: 獅子王エルトシャン Lion King Eltshan), was the king of the Agustrian state of Nordion, a full-blooded descendant of the Crusader Hoðr, and inheritor of the Demon Sword Mystletainn. He was a renowned knight who served as the commander of Nordion's Cross Knights order, and he was a close friend of Sigurd of Chalphy and Quan of Leonster. Despite his misgivings about his liege's decisions and actions, he was thoroughly loyal to a fault to Agustria's King Chagall, and in the Agustrian civil war he was torn between his loyalty to his liege and his bond with his old friends. | ||

As the rightful, major-blooded heir of Hoðr, Eldigan followed the Agustrian tradition of being allowed to wield Mystletainn only after swearing fealty to the Agusti royal family, who as the direct descendants of Hoðr claimed rightful ownership of the sword despite lacking the holy blood. Despite not wishing to fight Sigurd, following the downfall of Madino Castle, he was forced to lead an attack with the Cross Knights when Chagall accused his failure to do anything as a sign of treason. While at first he was resolved to die fighting for Agustria, during the fight Lachesis convinced him to try again to convince Chagall to back down. Eldigan agreed and, as one final memento, gave Lachesis a Lands Sword before leaving. On returning to Sylvale, however, his attempt fell on deaf ears and Chagall declared him a traitor in league with Sigurd. Chagall immediately had Eldigan executed by beheading. | ||

This, as well as the aforementioned non-requirement of Infinite Regalia to play Rogues & Redeemers, may indicate that Eldigan may have originally been planned to be playable as a SpotPass character, through either the Genealogy of the Holy War first-generation or "Others" character sets, but was ultimately left off the SpotPass roster and had these assets become unused data within the vanilla Awakening game, later put into use as a playable reward in Infinite Regalia and as an enemy unit in the Rogues & Redeemers maps. | ||

“ | A war now would incur huge sacrifices on both sides! Our past is a testament to that. The noble class aren't the ones who suffer in the end. It's the powerless citizens who suffer, and I'm not about to let it happen! | ” | — Eldigan, to Elliot |
---|
Eldigan (Japanese: エルトシャン Eltshan), also known by the title Eldigan, the Lionheart (Japanese: 獅子王エルトシャン Lion King Eltshan), was the king of the Agustrian state of Nordion, a full-blooded descendant of the Crusader Hoðr, and inheritor of the Demon Sword Mystletainn.
Biography
The Lionheart
Eldigan was born as the eldest of two children of the prior rulers of Nordion, the other being his half-sister Lachesis (the two had different mothers from each other[1]), who held him in the utmost respect. As the rightful, major-blooded heir of Hoðr, Eldigan followed the Agustrian tradition of being allowed to wield Mystletainn only after swearing fealty to the Agusti royal family, who as the direct descendants of Hoðr claimed rightful ownership of the sword despite lacking the holy blood.[2] He spent some of his education studying abroad in Grannvale by attending the military academy in Belhalla, where he first met Sigurd and Quan. The three became close friends and pledged their loyalty and aid to each other during their time at the academy.[3] After taking the throne of Nordion, Eldigan became a trusted advisor to Agustria's King Imca.[4] He was married to Grahnye, a noblewoman from Leonster, and around the year Grann 756-757 he fathered one child with her: a son, Ares.[5]
In the year Grann 757, Eldigan received word of Sigurd's army seizing control of Evans Castle in Verdane, and he travelled to Evans to confirm Sigurd's intentions. On hearing the story of Verdane's invasion from Sigurd, Eldigan promised to defend Evans from any potential aggression from other Agustrian lords.[6] His suspicions were confirmed during Sigurd's subsequent sortie into Verdane, when he and the Cross Knights deployed to repel an effort by Elliot of Heirhein to attack Evans while Sigurd was otherwise occupied.
The Agustrian crisis
Shortly after Sigurd emerged victorious in the war with Verdane, King Imca was assassinated by his son Chagall, who succeeded him as the king and immediately set about orchestrating a military build-up and anti-Grannvale sentiment. Eldigan attempted to convince Chagall to end his aggressive actions, but he was ignored in the face of Chagall's deep resentment of him and was arrested. This prompted Sigurd to come to his and Lachesis's aid as they faced aggression from the forces of Heirhein, which in turn devolved into an all-out war between Agustria and Sigurd's small army. In a desperate bid to halt Sigurd's advance, Chagall released Eldigan to negotiate with Sigurd, and Eldigan was furious to see what Sigurd had done seemingly unprovoked. He and Sigurd negotiated to allow Sigurd's army one year to restore Agustria to its prior order and return control to Chagall, but he warned Sigurd that any attempt to betray this deal would result in military action. Following this, Eldigan and the Cross Knights took residence in Sylvale Castle, in order to observe Sigurd's actions in Agusti.
Ultimately, despite their best efforts, the deal did not even last six months. Chagall spent these months rebuilding his military before unleashing an all-out assault to retake Agusti from Sigurd, much to Eldigan's shock. In preparation for the ensuing war, he had Grahnye and Ares travel to Leonster and seek refuge with her parents.[7] Despite not wishing to fight Sigurd, following the downfall of Madino Castle, he was forced to lead an attack with the Cross Knights when Chagall accused his failure to do anything as a sign of treason.
Legacy
The demise of Eldigan was the first of many losses which haunted Sigurd, and was followed quickly by the arrival of Lombard and Reptor to arrest him on charges of treason; indeed, the initial rumors of Sigurd's involvement in a plot against King Azmur alleged that Eldigan was part of it.[8] Following both Eldigan and Grahnye's deaths, Ares was raised by the mercenary Javarro, and came to falsely believe that Sigurd and Eldigan had been longtime enemies until Sigurd murdered Eldigan, leading him to seek revenge against Sigurd's own son, Seliph.[9] It was not until Nanna presented him with a letter from Eldigan that Ares learned the truth. Seliph, for his part, held an immense respect for Eldigan.[10]
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Role
Eldigan first appears as a NPC in Chapter 1, leading an army of eight Cross Knights. He and his army appear one turn after Genoa Castle has been seized, in the upper limits of the map near Nordion, in order to fight Elliot's army and protect Evans Castle while Sigurd fights deeper in Verdane. Once Elliot and his army has been routed, Eldigan's forces will retreat back to Nordion.
Eldigan later re-appears as a boss in Chapter 3, emerging as part of the retinue defending Sylvale Castle after Madino has been seized. He and his army of fourteen Cross Knights will actively attack Sigurd's army and attempt to capture Agusti Castle, but Eldigan himself can be convinced to retreat by having Lachesis talk to him. This will give Lachesis an Lands Sword and prompt the cutscene where Eldigan returns to Sylvale and is executed as a traitor.
In both cases, Eldigan's appearances are the first time in the game that a character wields a crusader regalia weapon in gameplay, soon followed by Quan obtaining Gáe Bolg in Chapter 3 after Eldigan's death.

Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Eldigan is available as a reward for completing the downloadable content chapter Infinite Regalia. While playable solely as a DLC reward, Eldigan has more in common with normal SpotPass units: his portrait reuses old art from Genealogy of the Holy War and he appears in the Rogues & Redeemers DLC series, as an enemy in Rogues & Redeemers 1, 2, and 3, without requiring Infinite Regalia to be installed to display his portrait.
Eldigan's portrait also has a background indicating a SpotPass origin, and unlike other characters obtainable as DLC rewards, Eldigan does not use a generic placeholder portrait when the game does not have access to portraits of DLC characters.

Personality
A rigid believer in knightly honor and chivalrous conduct, Eldigan was torn between his loyalty toward his friends and his loyalty toward his country. He understood the horrible effects wars had on the common people, and knew his duty was to protect them by ensuring that wars did not erupt.[11] Despite his deep bond with Sigurd, he had a habit of initially assuming the worst of Sigurd's military actions, both when he heard about the Verdane crisis[12] and after seeing what became of Agustria after Sigurd came to his rescue.[13] While at first he felt he could never actually treat Sigurd as an enemy on the battlefield,[14] he was willing to put this aside and fight for Agustria once he felt he had no other choice, but in the end he believed he would rather die to save his friends than in the name of a futile war and that this was the truest expression of a knight's honor.[15] He was close with his subordinates in the Cross Knights, and was moved by their constant loyalty to his command.[16]
His loyalty to his nation led him to hold respect for Chagall, no matter what the man did. He refused to believe the rumors of Chagall's involvement in Imca's assassination without proof,[17] despite Chagall's conduct he saved him from being killed by Sigurd's army during the initial battle,[18] and in spite of all the evidence to the contrary he always believed Chagall could be reasoned with. In the end, Eldigan believed that Agustria would be nothing without its king, and that Chagall's demise would bring an end to Agustria as well.[19]

Trivia
- In Awakening, Eldigan is the only character who is unable to use his signature weapon (Mystletainn) immediately after recruitment; he starts with only a B weapon level in swords, insufficient for Mystletainn.
- In his appearance in Awakening, Eldigan is the first character in the Fire Emblem series to be made available exclusively through paid DLC.

- ↑ "Black Knight Hoðr founded the Agusti Royal Family. He had many children and one of them, his youngest daughter who possessed the Brand, was married off to the Nordion family. From then on, the successor of the Brand appeared within the Nordion Royal Family and they were allowed to take the Demon Sword Mystletainn if they swore an oath of loyalty to the Agusti Royal Family. In terms of bloodline, the rulers of Agusti were Hoðr's direct descendants." — Designers' notes from a Genealogy of the Holy War playing guide, translated by Serenes Forest, Retrieved: June 7, 2015
- ↑ "Remember the academy? We all met at the military academy back in Belhalla. It was the three of us. You, me, and Eldigan. We were talking late that one night. And we took a vow to help each other out if one of us was ever in a bind." — Quan, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

- ↑ "There's been some nasty rumours making the rounds in the Royal Court. It's going around that Prince Quan of Leonster, King Eldigan of Nordion, and yourself are conspiring against His Majesty. They say that explains why you're hiding the Prince of Isaach." — Filat, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "If war breaks out, I will go. All mercenaries will. Besides, I heard that Sigurd's son is commanding the rebels. Sigurd was the sworn enemy of my father. His boy is as good as dead if I get my hands on him." — Ares, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "Look, I hold King Eldigan in the same high regard as my father did." — Seliph, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "A war now would incur huge sacrifices on both sides! Our past is a testament to that. The noble class aren't the ones who suffer in the end. It's the powerless citizens who suffer, and I'm not about to let it happen!" — Eldigan, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "How've you been, Sigurd... So what prompted you to take Evans Castle? You're not formally attacking Verdane, are you?" — Eldigan, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "Sigurd, what's going on here? Your army has gained control of the capital city, and I hear that Grannvale has dispatched officials to each of our castles. You're treating us just like we were a tributary state. Did Grannvale take occupation of Agustria while I was away!? Your answer better be good, Sigurd!" — Eldigan, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "What's His Majesty's rush!? Grr! Now I'll have to postpone my return to the capital! Aaah... I can't fight Sigurd. What to do... what to do..." — Eldigan, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "Lachesis: That's not true! If Chagall withdrew his troops, Sir Sigurd would also back out of this. Please, talk with King Chagall. He can't ignore the commander of the Cross Knights.
Eldigan: ... Okay... I'll give it one more shot. I'd rather risk my life for my friend than this crazy war. That is the way of the knight." — Eldigan, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑ "It's time to go in, men. This may just be our last battle. I cannot begin to tell you what your years of loyalty has meant to me..." — Eldigan, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "Lachesis: Eldigan, wait! King Chagall killed his own father. He's not about to listen to you! You're putting your life in peril!

If I can just speak with him, I know I'll get through to him." — Eldigan, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑ "I did, Sigurd. I saved the king. He is all that's left of Agustrian royalty.
