Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Effie is a Knight who joins in chapter 7 of Conquest and chapter 14 of Revelation. She sports well balanced growths in most areas, with an especially high 80% growth rate in strength, but is held back by her low base HP and speed, which will prevent her from reliably double-attacking. She is further held back by her class's 4 movement; while this is fixable with effective use of the Pair Up mechanic, it can still make her a nuisance to drag around the large maps of both routes she is playable in. In her joining chapter in Conquest, Effie makes for an effective earlygame tank despite her low HP, and will usually deal high damage to enemy Faceless. In Revelation Effie is in a rather unfortunate position, coming around the midgame while being very underleveled and unable to contribute much aside from her pair up bonuses.
Effie comes with the skills Puissance and Defense +2. Defense +2 is very good in the earlygame, but becomes less useful later when the player gets access to better skills. Puissance is a very interesting skill which lets the player unit deal +3 damage when attacking if the unit's strength is at least 5 point higher than that of the enemy. Thanks to her high strength base and growth, as well as the possible boosts from Pair Up and a Strength Tonic, Effie can very quickly make effective use of this skill to deal major damage to low strength enemy units, and even potentially one-shot lighter classes such as Dark Mages and Ninjas. Around the midgame, however, this skill will fall off in usefulness as enemies become increasingly more bulky in both HP and defense, making the prospect of one-shotting them more difficult. That said, it can remain useful if the player invests in a Brave Lance for her, as that will allow her to strike twice, effectively doubling the damage bonus of Puissance from +3 on a single hit to a total of +6 over two hits, potentially allowing her to still one-round KO enemies in the mid-to-lategame. Later on Effie can learn the skill Natural Cover, which is a somewhat situational skill, but can be useful for giving Effie additional durability.
Effie can either promote into a General or a Great Knight. General keeps Effie relatively the same in terms of growths and gives her access to the skills Wary Fighter and Pavise. Wary Fighter prevents Effie from being doubled, but also prevents her from doubling as well. This is not a very big loss in Conquest as enemies tend to have very high speed in said route, and Effie cannot reach the doubling threshold because of her low base speed without receiving significant investment, such as Speedwings, that other units such as Xander can potentially use more effectively. Pavise is overall too situational to be incorporated into strategies and will only be useful on rare occasions. Great Knight gives Effie some much needed speed, though she loses some skill and luck in exchange, and vastly improves her movement. She also gets access to both swords and axes in said class, but because of getting E ranks in both weapon types Effie is going to mostly use lances. While in the Great Knight class Effie learns the skills Luna and Armored Blow. Luna is an occassionaly useful damage boosting skill, while Armored Blow can allow her to survive very strong physical attacks during enemy phase.
On the subject of reclassing, Effie's low magic largely renders both Troubadour and Strategist as suboptimal classes for her. Maid, however, can still be useful due to the effectiveness of hidden weapons and getting the skill Tomebreaker. For these reasons, Maid may be a servicable class to keep Effie in for a short time.
Overall, Effie is an unusually good armor knight in Conquest, with great offensive capabilities in the earlygame, but is considerably less useful in Revelation. Because of mechanics such as pair up and promotion to Great Knight which fix the most common problems with armor knights, Effie is able to contribute well by one-shotting or dealing great damage to enemy units, and can even serve as a decent tank as long as the enemy is not using effective weaponry.
