Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Edward is the first swordsman in the Dawn Brigade. He has decent base skill and speed but average base strength and mediocre durability. He does well against earlygame axe-users due to his speed, weapon triangle advantage (not in Hard/Maniac mode) and innate Wrath. While Edward has excellent offensive growths all around, without significant babying, he will often be outclassed by Zihark who joins six chapters later already promoted with better base stats, higher crit bonus, more movement, Adept, still decent growths (albeit not as good as Edward's), and an earth affinity.
If resources are put into Edward, he can turn into a powerful Swordmaster and Trueblade through part 3 and onward. His primary long-term weaknesses are his mediocre durability and weak 1-2 range weapons for much of the game. As a Swordmaster, Edward will, on average, cap strength, skill, and speed relatively quickly, so his part 3/4 defenses can be patched with BEXP.
Edward's performance is drastically affected by the difficulty mode. While he is strong in Normal and Easy Mode, where experience is abundant, he struggles to pull his weight on Hard mode. He will barely double enemies in Part 1, he cannot gain weapon triangle advantage on axe users making him less dodgy, and the severe drought of experience and BEXP means that training him deprives other units of badly-needed experience. The result of training him is a slightly more powerful Zihark during the midgame where most of the Dawn Brigade needs to shine. Using Zihark gives the same results with almost no investment, and allows the player to invest the experience that would have been needed to make Edward strong into more useful long-term units like Jill and Nolan. In Hard Mode, Edward is best used as a free deployment chip unit for Part 1, possibly early-promoted with a Master Seal in Part 3, and ignored through part 4.
Wrath is one of the few main reasons to use Edward over Zihark, so if the player chooses to train Edward, it should always be kept on him; otherwise it should be removed soon so other units can take advantage of Wrath. Resolve and Vantage are other skills available through part 1 that complement Wrath. With Resolve, Edward's avoid and crit rate both increases, letting him dodge more and have an even higher crit before they attack. With Vantage, Edward can potentially Wrath-crit enemies before they actually attack. Note that both combinations are not reliable for surviving due to activation rates and Edward's bad durability.
Edward has a light affinity which boosts defense and accuracy. The defense boost is nice but accuracy is often less important for Edward due to his good skill and swords. Nolan and Zihark are both infantry units in the Dawn Brigade that have earth affinities, giving both partners a large avoid boost while benefiting from the extra defense (Nolan also appreciates the slight accuracy boost thanks to axes). Volug and Fiona also have earth affinities but Volug has a much higher movement than Edward, and Fiona has very poor performance and movement through all of her available chapters. Aran is another physical infantry unit with a thunder affinity which also gives extra defense and avoid.

Personality and character
Edward is an energetic, although somewhat reckless, swordsman who is easily excitable. He is a very simple person and believes in Micaiah's oracles without question. He thinks very highly of himself and has a very cheery disposition, but he is very naive, as shown by his belief that if someone says to do something, then it is the right thing to do. His best friend, Leonardo, tries to teach him a sense of responsibility, but often to no avail.
