Still, we have no choice but to eliminate those who cling to unreasonable ideas of justice. Even if our enemies are the gods themselves...we must never lose sight of our goal. [...] It's not possible to change the world without sacrifice. Dying for the greater good is not a death in vain.
— Edelgard

Edelgard von Hresvelg (pronounced /ˈeɪdəlɡɑɹd vɒn ˈhɹɛsvɛlɡ/[key]; Japanese: エーデルガルト=フォン=フレスベルグ Edelgard von Hresvelg) is one of the three main characters, alongside Dimitri and Claude,[2] appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. She is the heiress apparent to the Adrestian Empire and the leader of the Black Eagles house at the Officers Academy. During the events of Part I, Edelgard disguises herself as the Flame Emperor, an entity working against the Church of Seiros.

Edelgard was born the ninth child of Emperor Ionius IX of the Adrestian Empire. In Imperial Year 1171, Edelgard was taken to Faerghus by her uncle, Lord Arundel, and she quickly befriended her maternal stepbrother Dimitri. When she returned to the Empire in 1174, he gave her a dagger as a parting gift. At some point in her childhood, she and all ten of her siblings were imprisoned by a conspiracy of nobles including Arundel, Duke Aegir, and Lord von Vestra, with Ionius IX helpless to stop them. The siblings were subjected to horrific experimentation in order to implant them with the Crest of Flames, and ultimately Edelgard was the sole survivor and successful test subject. Developing a hatred of the Crest system that had dominated Fódlan for a millennium, Edelgard swore to destroy the Crests and the Church of Seiros which upheld their power by any means necessary and unite Fódlan under the Adrestian banner to create world peace.

In Imperial Year 1180, Edelgard enrolled at the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery along with several of her friends and people from her kingdom. In order to facilitate her campaign against the Church, she took up the disguise of the Flame Emperor, a masked individual conducting terrorist operations against the Church, and made a reluctant alliance with a group known only as "those who slither in the dark". Her identity as the Flame Emperor was known only by a select few, including an Adrestian general known only as the Death Knight and her loyal vassal Hubert. She hired a group of bandits led by Kostas to assassinate Dimitri and Claude, heirs apparent of Faerghus and Leicester, in order to make her eventual conquest of Fódlan easier. However, this was thwarted by the mercenaries Byleth and Jeralt, and Byleth took up a teaching position at the Academy. Their choice of which house to lead would have far-reaching consequences for all of Fódlan.

In all routes, Edelgard spends the next year studying at the Officer's Academy along with the Black Eagles and orchestrating attacks on the Church as the Flame Emperor. Eventually, she convinces Ionius IX to abdicate and assumes the Adrestian throne. After being unmasked as the Flame Emperor in the Holy Tomb, Edelgard formally declares war on the Church. She launches a full-scale invasion of Garreg Mach Monastery, and the monastery is overrun and Byleth goes missing.

Black Eagles

If Byleth chooses to lead the Black Eagles, Edelgard and her classmates become their pupils. Edelgard accompanies Byleth directly throughout their time teaching at the Officer's Academy and occasionally acts against her own interests as the Flame Emperor, either to protect her cover or to oppose the more extreme actions of her "allies". As the school year progresses, Edelgard becomes attached to Byleth and hopes to sway them to her way of thinking. Eventually, Edelgard is unmasked as the Flame Emperor in the Holy Tomb, and Byleth is forced to make an ultimate choice regarding their loyalties.

Crimson Flower

If Byleth chooses to desert the Church to remain with Edelgard, she and Hubert are extremely grateful. Edelgard organizes her former classmates into an elite task force known as the Black Eagle Strike Force. After the Battle of Garreg Mach, Archbishop Rhea takes refuge in Fhirdiad and Edelgard spends the next five years locked in a bitter stalemate with the Kingdom and the Alliance. Eventually, Byleth returns, and with their aid Edelgard is swiftly able to conquer Leicester and either kill Claude or force him into exile. After beating back an attempt by the Church to retake Garreg Mach, Edelgard begins military operations against Faerghus in earnest. She first conquers Arianrhod, a fortress on the western border between Adrestia and Faerghus. Afterwards, she begins a direct march for Fhirdiad. Dimitri and Rhea move to intercept her at the Tailtean Plains, but Rhea is driven off and Dimitri is slain in battle. The group finally arrives in Fhirdiad, and Rhea orders the city burned to the ground in order to slow them down and transforms into her ultimate form, the Immaculate One. Edelgard, Byleth, and the Black Eagle Strike Force engage her in a climatic final battle. Ultimately, the Empire emerges victorious and Rhea is slain. With all of Fódlan under Adrestia's dominion, Edelgard finally begins the reforms she always wanted to bring to the nobility and the Crest system and begins a silent war against "those who slither in the dark" now that they have outlived their usefulness to her.

Silver Snow

Azure Moon

If Byleth chooses to lead the Blue Lions, Edelgard sways the Faerghus mage Cornelia to frame Dimitri for regicide and have him executed. Believing Dimitri dead, Edelgard spends the next five years waging war on the Church, the eastern Faerghus territories, and Leicester. Eventually, Dimitri and Byleth return and tip the scale of the war decisively in the Kingdom's favor. Edelgard personally leads an elite detachment to battle Dimitri and Claude at Gronder Field, but is defeated and driven off. After Dimitri recovers from the mental trauma he suffered during his five-year exile, he offers to parley with Edelgard. Accompanied by Hubert and Byleth, the two have a heartfelt conversation about the future of Fódlan, but ultimately conclude that their views of the world cannot coexist and they must settle their differences in battle. Edelgard returns to the Imperial palace in Enbarr. While Hubert stalls for time and is ultimately slain, Edelgard uses the power of her twin Crests to transform into a Demonic Beast of extreme power. In this form, she faces Dimitri in a climatic final battle, but is defeated and returned to human form. Dimitri makes one last attempt to reconcile with her, but Edelgard attacks him with the dagger he once gifted her. Dimitri stabs her in the heart with Areadbhar, killing her instantly.

Personality and character

This section has been marked as a stub. Please help improve the page by adding information.

Edelgard exudes a cold, yet noble and refined aura. She likes talented individuals and dislikes losing control. As a result of the horrific experimentation she endured as a child in order to implant a second Crest into her body, Edelgard despises the Crests and is willing to go to any lengths to remove their influence from Fódlan. However, she has limits regarding what she is willing to tolerate from her reluctant allies, and swears to Byleth and Jeralt that she would have stopped Solon's actions in Remire Village had she known what he was planning. While devoted to her plans for Fódlan's future, Edelgard also has a somewhat self-indulgent side, and her supports with Byleth show her fantasizing about taking a day off to gorge herself on sweets or complaining about Hubert's nagging about work.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Edelgard, Flame Emperor
Byleth and Edelgard ended the tyranny of a godlike being. Byleth was wounded and lost the power of the progenitor god, but it mattered not, as <he/she> and Edelgard had each other. To ensure lasting peace, the two fought against those who slither in the dark, and to ensure a society where people can rise and fall by their own merits, they spent their lives reforming the antiquated class system. They achieved much in their time together, and it is said that they were sometimes spotted leaving the palace to privately enjoy the world they had created. How they spent those precious moments, none but the two of them will ever know.

Edelgard, Flame Emperor & Hubert, Emperor's Confidant
As the new Adrestian Emperor, Edelgard gave all she had to breathe new life into the government of Fódlan. With tireless work, great sacrifice, and her devoted servant Hubert by her side, she instituted new class reforms and helped to ensure the people's independence. Hubert was always close at hand, ready to dispose of unsavory burdens by any means necessary. In their later years, they passed the fruits of their labor on to Edelgard's successor and vanished from the public eye. Though it is said they spent the rest of their lives together, it is unlikely they ever gave voice to the true depth of their affections.

Edelgard, Flame Emperor & Dorothea, Mystical Songstress
As Edelgard's reign as the Adrestian emperor began, Enbarr was restored, and with it, a certain opera house. Soon the Mittelfrank Opera Company put together a war drama depicting the journey and sacrifice of the emperor and her companions, and the starring role went to none other than Dorothea. Edelgard initially forbade the company from staging it, but was eventually persuaded by Dorothea's passionate performance to rescind that decree. It is said that the emperor always set aside time to enjoy the opera thereafter.

Battle quotes

There can be no victory unless I defeat you. So be it!
— Edelgard as an enemy fighting Byleth in Chapter 1.
Edelgard: Dimitri... It's time! We can finally settle the question of who's stronger.
Dimitri: Very well. I accept your challenge. With you as my opponent, I won't hold anything back.
Edelgard: I would expect no less!

— Edelgard fighting Dimitri in Chapter 1.
Claude: Look at that, a real-life princess! I"ll have to be careful not to scar that little face of yours.
Edelgard: Careful, Claude. I'll win no matter what, but you're only making things harder for yourself.
Claude: Losing hasn't even crossed your mind, has it? Ooh, this'll be a bit of shock, then.
Edelgard: To shock was your intention to begin with, was it not?

— Edelgard fighting Claude in Chapter 1.
Kostas: Spoiled little noble! Just die like a good little rich kid!
Edelgard: Do you really think being born a commoner gives you the right to kill? Despicable.

— Edelgard fighting Kostas in Chapter 2.
Edelgard: There's no way around it... I accept your challenge!
Death Knight: Oh? This will be fun...

— Edelgard fighting the Death Knight in Chapter 4.
If you stand in my way, I will cut you down until you have no blood left to bleed. What? I was just trying to rally your spirits. Now, to victory!
— Edelgard, fighting Byleth in Chapter 7.
Dimitri: So, it is time to cross blades... I never imagined such a day would come to pass.
Edelgard: If the Empire and the Kingdom go to war, we'll be able to fight as much as we please.
Dimitri: I am sorry, but that is not something to joke about. The thought of fighting you is troubling at best.
Edelgard: In that case, I wonder when you'll be able to stomach facing me in battle... Do you need a few moments?

— Edelgard fighting Dimitri in Chapter 7.
Claude: Hey, Princess! Heads up! There's a rat right by your Imperial feet...
Edelgard: BAH! I-- Huh. How dare you make a fool of me. You will not rile me with such childish tactics.
Claude: Ah, so the sheer terror in your eyes was...something else entirely. My mistake. Anyway, it was only a joke.
Edelgard: You really hope to unsettle me with childish jokes? It won't work. You must stand and fight!

— Edelgard fighting Claude in Chapter 7.
Edelgard: Tomas! No... Solon. I will stop you.
Solon: What?! If you insist on turning your blade against me, then expect no mercy.

— Edelgard, fighting Solon in Chapter 8.
Death Knight: What are you trying to do here?
Edelgard: You're the one who should be answering that question. Stay out of my way!

— Edelgard fighting the Death Knight in Chapter 8.
Kronya: Huh? What are you- Are you here to kill me?
Edelgard: I am. Prepare yourself for death while you still can.

— Edelgard fighting Kronya in Chapter 10.
Solon: So, this is how it is... I cannot let you live!
Edelgard: You stole the words from my mouth. You lost the moment you failed to kill the professor.

— Edelgard fighting Solon in Chapter 10.
Despite what I said, I have no intention of killing you. So why not stand down and get out of my way?
— Edelgard, as a boss in the Black Eagles version of Chapter 11's mission.

Professor... I will make no excuses. Thank you for all that you did for me. In Let's leave it at that.
— Edelgard, as a boss fighting Byleth in the Black Eagles version of Chapter 11.
You wish to interfere? Then your life is forfeit.
— The Flame Emperor, as a boss in the Blue Lions and Golden Deer versions of Chapter 11's mission.
You are the one person I did not wish to make an enemy of...
— The Flame Emperor, as a boss fighting Byleth in the Blue Lions and Golden Deer versions of Chapter 11.
Dimitri: Do not try to say you have forgotten... Do you know just how many people died in Duscur?
Flame Emperor: Why bother with this? Stay silent and fight.
Dimitri: So you want to turn your eyes away from the lives you have trampled? Dastard! You are a monster. The lowliest beast I have ever known.

— The Flame Emperor, as a boss fighting Dimitri in Chapter 11.
Claude: So, you're the fabled Flame Emperor? Go ahead and enlighten me. What are you planning to do with the Crest Stones? What did you use Flayn's blood for? Who's Kronya? Who's Solon?
Flame Emperor: Silence. There is no need for you to know.
Claude: Is it that mask that's to blame for your curtness? If so, maybe I should rip it off and ask again.

— The Flame Emperor, as a boss fighting Claude in Chapter 11.
You will come to regret raising your blade against the emperor of the Adrestian Empire!
— Edelgard, as a boss in Chapter 12's mission.
Think very carefully about whether you wish to raise your sword against the Empire...or if you will offer it to us in fealty. And after you've thought it through, if you still wish to fight, I won't stop you. I will simply use the full extent of my power...and crush you.
— Edelgard, as a boss when fighting members of the Black Eagles in Chapter 12's mission.
I wish you were someone whose heart could be swayed by my words and deeds. If it were so, I would have done anything to make you my ally...
— Edelgard, as a boss when fighting against Byleth in Chapter 12's mission.
Dimitri: You're late. I... We are all tired of waiting. Now, let's separate that sick head from your neck, shall we?
Edelgard: Heh. You never were one for patience.

— Edelgard, as a boss when fighting against Dimitri in Chapter 12's mission.
Claude: Here she is—Her Majesty—looking pleased as a dog with a stick. What exactly happened to make you this way?
Edelgard: I'm simply seeing through a promise I made to myself a long time ago.
Claude: Isn't this much force excessive? Thanks to you, my own long-held ambitions are nearly destroyed.
Edelgard: If you don't want them to be destroyed completely, I suggest you turn tail and flee.

— Edelgard, as a boss fighting Claude in Chapter 12.
Rhea: No matter your reasons, I cannot permit you to go on living any longer!
Edelgard: The feeling is mutual. I must put a stop to your reign of tyranny!
Rhea: You must know what a fool you are. The greatest of sins is to make an enemy of the goddess herself!
Edelgard: I have only made an enemy of the church, not of the faith.

— Edelgard, fighting Rhea in the Black Eagles version of Chapter 12's mission.
Dimitri: Must you continue to conquer? Continue to kill?
Edelgard: Must you continue to reconquer? Continue to kill in retaliation? I will not stop. There is nothing I would not sacrifice to cut a path to Fódlan's new dawn!
Dimitri: Enough of this madness! This future of yours is built on a foundation of corpses and tears!

— Edelgard, fighting Dimitri in Crimson Flower Chapter 17
Rhea: An ancestor of the Hresvelgs, who became Adrestia's first emperor... He saved me. Supported me. Gave his all to the cause of defeating Nemesis. That I should find myself here at Tailtean, striking down his scion...
Edelgard: I don't advise presumptions, Rhea. I will not die by your hand.

— Edelgard, fighting Rhea in Crimson Flower Chapter 17.
Edelgard: So it's true. You don't value human life at all. Isn't that right, Immaculate One?
The Immaculate One: Nonsense! Fools who do not accept their own sins are undeserving of salvation! You humans are the ones who betrayed! You betrayed me, and you betrayed my mother!
Edelgard: I did not betray you or her. I never believed in you from the beginning.

— Edelgard, fighting the Immaculate One in Crimson Flower Chapter 18
I will destroy both the Kingdom and the Alliance. Now, with one fell swoop!
— Edelgard, as a boss in Azure Moon Chapter 17
I knew when next we met one of our paths would have to come to an end. Your journey ends here, Professor. Forever...
— Edelgard, as a boss when fighting against Byleth in Azure Moon Chapter 17
Dimitri: Stab your chest, break your neck, crush your head... I will allow you to choose your own death.
Edelgard: I'm not interested in methods of dying. All that matters is when death takes place, not how. And I have no intention of dying today.
Dimitri: I'm sure all of the people you've slaughtered so far thought the same!

— Edelgard, as a boss when fighting against Dimitri in Azure Moon Chapter 17
You shall be obliterated! I will take you out so fast you will not have a chance to lament...
— Hegemon Edelgard, as a boss in Azure Moon Chapter 22
Facing you... I grow weak...
— Hegemon Edelgard, as a boss when fighting against Byleth in Azure Moon Chapter 22
So you're another of the goddess's vanguard. You don't have even a shred of self-awareness, do you? Come at me, so that I may put you out of your misery!
— Edelgard, as a boss in Silver Snow Chapter 19.
This has nothing do to with where you were born. That we are fighting now is only a result of the choices you've made. So I'm going to give that the response it deserves. I will crush you with everything I have!
— Edelgard, as a boss when fighting against an Adrestian in Silver Snow Chapter 19.
Professor... I suppose you think you can defeat me. Is that right? But I will never give up. Even if my arms and legs failed me, I would still find a way to move forward. I will smash that false goddess and her minion into the ground! I will fight to free this world from her vile grasp!
— Edelgard, as a boss when fighting against Byleth in Silver Snow Chapter 19.

  • Cristina Vee voiced Edelgard in the English version of Three Houses's E3 2018 trailer, but does not voice Edelgard in the final game.[3][4]
  • Ai Kakuma, Edelgard's Japanese voice actress, also voices Flora in Fates and Heroes.[5]
  • Edelgard is the only Lord who can potentially turn against the player and the only Lord who is ever fought as an enemy on the story route in which they are a Lord. She is also the only Lord who is also one of the final bosses.
  • If paralogues are discounted, Edelgard has the most appearances as an enemy in a single main-series game, with 6; she is fought in chapters 1, 7, 11, 12, 17, and 22 of the Blue Lions route of Three Houses.
