Duessel (デュッセル, Dyusseru) is a great knight who appears in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. He is one of Grado's six generals, known as Obsidian. He is very loyal to Grado, but their crimes lead him to follow his own beliefs and betray the nation. He joins Eirika's army in Chapter 15, or Ephraim's army in Chapter 10.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Role

As a general of Grado, Duessel appears in many scenes before he joins Eirika or Ephraim's army. Before the war, he had been a teacher in the ways of the lance to Ephraim; however, since the war has started, Ephraim has not seen him. He is known as the Obsidian in the Grado forces.

Duessel first appears in Chapter 3, after the battle is over, in a scene set in Grado Keep. He is with the other two generals, Glen and Selena, discussing the war, quietly questioning the emperor Vigarde's intentions. Vigarde summons them and give them each a new partner; Duessel is partnered with Riev. These two are ordered to stay in the capital, charged with the responsibility of defense.

Eirika's route

Duessel appears in more scenes with the emperor. In Chapter 9, he is ordered to go to Frelia and fight Ephraim. In several other scenes, he is mentioned as one of the Imperial Three.

In Chapter 15, Ephraim arrives from the southeast, riding in with Knoll and Duessel. He helps Eirika in her battle, and after the two twins reunite, he fights with them for the rest of the game.

Ephraim's route

In Ephraim's route, Duessel is still ordered to go to Frelia. In this story, he asks the emperor why he has been trying to destroy Renais and the rest of Magvel. However, Vigarde refuses to provide and answer, instead only commanding him to destroy Ephraim's army. After the battle, a soldier tells Ephraim Duessel has been begging the emperor for answers for days, with no answer in sight. In another scene in the same chapter, Vigarde orders General Selena to find Duessel and kill him, branding him a traitor. She is doubtful, but regardless, she follows his orders out of loyalty.

In the next chapter, Ephraim and his army arrives at Bethroen, a seaside town where Dussel and a few troops are stationed. Selena comes to apprehend Duessel; when he wishes to talk to Ephraim, she threatens to execute him for treason. Duessel flees to a corner, and Ephraim spots him, aiming to save him. They meet, and Duessel joins Ephraim's army. After the battle ends, Duessel explains to Ephraim that the emperor has changed, after one day, Prince Lyon and created a strange "Dark Stone". After this, he joins Ephraim's army.

Personality and character

Duessel is a mature, strong man who is loyal to his country of Grado. However, during the course of the game, this loyalty is shaken by the trials of the war, and he then betrays the country and acts according to his own beliefs. He feels guilty for this, having been branded a traitor.[1] Otherwise, he is good-willed and kindhearted, shown in acts such as his taking time off from his job as a general to find a female captive's daughter.[2] He is quite wise and mature, an old man compared to the rest of the army, and very insightful in others' and his own thoughts. Many look up to him, having had a rank as high as former Grado general. Amelia and Cormag both admire him as a Grado general, while Ephraim knows him as a former lance teacher.

Duessel is a former general of Grado, known as the Obsidian of the Imperial Three: he, Selena, and Glen. However, after the emperor changes and declares war on Renais, during the game, he is unwilling to keep fighting for Grado and betrays the emperor. He had been a former teacher of the lance to Ephraim, and is famous among soldiers of Grado.

He carries a cursed lance called Gavaleus, which caused Valter's insanity long ago. During a battle, Valter took the lance after his own broke, and went mad from the power of the lance. In his A support with Cormag, Duessel gives the lance to him, believing him to have the courage and righteousness to wield it.[3]

  1. "Duessel: I know that I've been branded a traitor. I'm prepared for that. But I do have one regret... I regret that I betrayed my emperor...
Ephraim: You never betrayed him. You remain as loyal to him now as when you swore your oaths. No, it is Grado who has betrayed the ideals it once held dear. And now, as then, you are my teacher. Nothing has changed. No, you are no traitor. If anything, you are the last true man of Grado.

  2. "Duessel: Only recently did she remember that she had once had a daughter. I took time off from my duties and visited the village where she had lived. But the villagers told me her daughter had left the village some time ago. With no clues as to the girl's whereabouts, I'd almost given up hope of finding her." — Duessel and Amelia's A support conversation, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
  3. "Duessel: Valter had broken his lance, and when I wasn't looking he somehow took this one. From that moment, he was changed... He killed everyone--even retreating men. I took the lance from him when I realized what had happened, but it was too late. Madness had awakened within Valter and was coursing through his body. From then on, he hungered only for battle and for blood... It's not as though Valter was a gentle lamb before, but now his appetite for violence increased many times over. It's all because of this cursed lance.
Cormag: ...... That odd light playing around the point... I thought it looked familiar. It was Valter... It's the same light Valter had in his eyes on the battlefield. Valter's insane because of this lance. ...... Sir Duessel, if it please you, would you let me have this lance?
    ...
Duessel: ...... I understand you, Cormag. I'm going to let you have it. I have no son. I had not yet decided to whom I should pass on this legacy. Now I see that leaving it to someone whom I trust and believe in is best. As with me, your admiration of weapons is balanced by a healthy respect. You also have a good eye, and you possess tremendous strength. The day you are able to wield this lance may not be far off at all. If the madness in this lance can be tamed, it may very well be a weapon without equal. ...I never had the courage to wield it, but I would love to see it used righteously. ...I am entrusting it to you. I hope you will use it one day.
