In the Begnion capital of Sienne, Lekain informs Hetzel that Yune's forces have defeated the Disciples of Order at each turn. Lekain then decides to lead a force directly to defeat them. Meanwhile in the Grann Desert, Micaiah has a talk with Sanaki, hoping to mend their relations. Able to sense Sanaki's thoughts, Micaiah deduces that the former feels inadequate due to her inability to sing the galdr of release or hear the voice of the goddess. When Sanaki wonders how Micaiah has such a power, Yune explains that she did not gift it to her, rather she was born with it, likely because of her branded heritage. When Yune says that she does not know why Micaiah could sing the galdr, Sanaki is baffled, believing that, as a god, Yune should know. Yune then states that the gods are not perfect, and make mistakes just as people do; with one such mistake drowning all but Tellius. Yune becomes upset with herself over this, and briefly causes a sandstorm. When Micaiah returns, Sanaki wonders what Ashera's voice is like, having never heard it before.
As they continue to cross the desert, Naesala alerts the army that the Disciples of Order, as well as Lekain, have arrived. Lekain warps next to Sanaki and declares her to be a false apostle. Sanaki asks why this is, and Lekain explains that the apostle is always the firstborn daughter of each generation in Altina's line; Sanaki is not, and is told that she had a sister who was assassinated along with the former apostle, Misaha. Lekain then declares that whoever wins in a battle to the death will be the right one, and warps away. With a chance to end the blood pact in sight, Micaiah orders her army to defeat their assailants. During the battle, as the Disciples seem overwhelming, the Black Knight warps in to aid Micaiah. The army is unable to catch Lekain, however, as he warps away as he sees danger arise.
After the battle ends, the Black Knight asks Micaiah to come with him to the Tower of Guidance alone, though she refuses, not wanting to leave the others behind. He then states that Ashera will cast her judgment again, and that he will come to Micaiah once more, then leaves. Micaiah then tells Sothe that she was unable to obtain the blood pact. Later that night, Sanaki speaks with Sigrun and Tanith. Sanaki speaks of how she feels she is unworthy of Begnion's praise, as she cannot hear the goddess' voice. She worries that, because of this, she has betrayed her people indirectly. Sigrun and Tanith reassure her, telling her that they would remain by her side either way, extolling her for always fighting for the people above all else.
Beginning log
The journey to the Tower of Guidance becomes more difficult, as Ashera's Disciples of Order hound the travelers' every step. Micaiah's ability to sense danger proves invaluable, as it gives her allies advance warning of attacks by the Disciples. Thus prepared for each battle, the group keeps casualties to a minimum. As they travel south through Begnion, Micaiah and her company clash repeatedly with the Disciples of Order. Eventually, the pass through the central mountains and into the lonely wastelands of the vast Grann Desert. They are sustained only by their faith that they will reunite with their companions at the Tower of Guidance.
