— Dieck, to Shanna

(Japanese: ディーク Dieck) is an Etrurian/Western Islander mercenary. Formerly employed by Lord Pent of Reglay as a gladiator and bodyguard in the Reglay family's service, he later became a renowned mercenary leader, and in the Disturbance of Bern was hired by Eliwood of Pherae to reinforce the ranks of the Pheraen army under Roy.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

Dieck is the leader of a small mercenary band—composed of Wade, Lot, and more recently, Shanna—that is hired by Eliwood for the war against Bern. He and his men arrive to the meeting point, only to find Roy's army is already fighting off some soldiers. They join the battle immediately, and after rescuing Elen's mistress, they work alongside Roy during the rest of the war.

After Bern is defeated and the war is over, he breaks up his band but keeps working as a mercenary, his fame extending through Elibe.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Dieck is going to be one of your most powerful/reliable units for the majority of the early to mid game, mostly from his high base stats and that the iron blade does not induce a speed penalty. He’ll easily double any unit he fights (except for other mercenaries most of the time) and has enough strength to defeat them in two hits of the iron blade, or leave the kill to another unit by using the iron sword instead. Dieck will be one of the best candidates for wielding Durandal, the first legendary weapon you obtain, since he starts with C rank (101 exp) swords in chapter 2. His promotion also helps with this by giving him a full weapon rank upgrade (+50), so he’ll only need 100 weapon exp to reach S rank (251). Another thing to note on Dieck’s promotion is that he gains a good +2 to strength and speed as well as a massive +4 defense and HP. While E rank axes may not sound that great at first, Dieck will only ever need hand axes and, mostly a choice of preference, a steel axe which weighs him down by 1 point of speed or an iron axe. Either way, Dieck’s high base skill and average luck stat will give him a +30 hit rate from that alone.

Personality and character

Dieck is a mercenary who is serious about his work. Even though he tends to show a more relaxed side, usually facing danger with humor,[2] a life full of hardships has left a mark on him, leading him to distrust others. He is conscious of the difficulties mercenaries have to deal with, and tries to teach Lot and Shanna not to trust employers and other mercenaries too much, but to no avail.[3] In his supports with Lot, he tells the other man how one of his first employers betrayed him. He survived the battle, but was captured and tortured.[4]

Although he acts rude to get people away, Dieck truly cares for his comrades.[5] Yet he does not seem to realize that people can also care for him.[6]

Fifteen years ago, he saved Klein from a lion in an arena, ending up heavily scarred. After that incident, Klein's parents hired him as a pitfighter, and Dieck was considered as a son by them and as old brother by Klein. Some years after, though, Dieck became worried by the complaints and gossips, and so, he left the family. However, the Reglays talked of him to Clarine, who has wanted to meet him since she was little.[7]

Endings

Dieck, Wounded Tiger
Short: Continued his mercenary career.

Long: Dieck broke up his mercenary band and set out to travel on his own. After that, he continued to participate in various battles. Once, an entire legion of enemies fled after seeing him appear on the battlefield... That is but one of the many legends he has left behind.

    Shanna: That's not a problem.
    Dieck: Eh?
Shanna: You wouldn't be thinking things like that.
    Dieck: You never know.
Shanna: I know. So do Lot and Ward. That's why we can entrust our lives to you.

  4. "Dieck: Our squad was sent right in the middle of the enemy lines. We were supposed to go deep into Bern and kill the enemy leader. We waited underground for days...and then the time came. When we went out... dozens of arrows rained down on us.
    Lot: ! Why...?
Dieck: Our employer... He purposely put us there so he could buy time for himself to escape. Our squad was decimated. They killed us all, except for me. They left me alive for torturing purposes.
" — Dieck and Lot's B support, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  5. "Dieck: ...I thought you had some kind of burden, but now I see it clearly... Well, guess I'll go along with you.
Rutger: I have no need for sympathy!
Dieck: Come on, you know how strong I am, right? If you really want to take on Bern, then there's no better ally than me. What do you say?
    Rutger: ...Suit yourself.
Dieck: And so I will. Well then, let's go, partner!

  6. "Klein: You were always thinking the best for us... But did you ever consider the fact that we were concerned for you as well? I don't want us to be in a relation in which we ignore each other when we meet...

  7. "Dieck: Who told you?
