The Devil Axe is a fairly rare axe-type weapon in the FES. It is a high-risk high-reward weapon, typically with a low weapon rank and high damage output, but with the possibility of the user getting damaged instead of the target. Damage done to the user upon backfire is the damage that would have been done to the target had the attack not backfired.  In Blazing Sword, The Sacred Stones, and its unused appearance in Path of Radiance, it is known for its high boost to weapon experience for axes upon use.  In its appearance in Echoes:  Shadows of Valentia, the backfire effect is associated with one passive skill, and a second passive skill allows its wielder to recover HP upon defeating an enemy.
The Devil Axe (Japanese: デビルアクス Devil Axe) is a rare axe that was introduced in FE1. It is a high-risk, high-reward weapon: it has exceptionally high raw power compared to other axes, but it has a chance of backfiring and damaging its wielder instead of the target. If it backfires, the wielder suffers the same amount of damage that would have been dealt to the target had the attack not backfired.

The Devil Axe made its first appearance in FE1 and has appeared in nine games of the series with an additional unused appearance in a tenthThe Devil Axe is entirely absent in Gaiden, Genealogy of the Holy War, Radiant Dawn, Awakening, and Fates.
Despite the danger it poses to anybody who would use it, the Devil Axe has some advantages. In addition to its exceptional might, it has a low required weapon rank/level which lets almost any axe user immediately use it, and in the Game Boy Advance games, using it awards a very high amount of weapon experience to increase axe ranks. The risk of having it backfire is mitigated by its wielder's luck stat, although there is always a minimum 1% chance that it will backfire no matter how high a unit's luck isAdditionally, in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia it heals its user when they defeat an enemy, although since axes are usable only by enemies in that game, this does not help the player.

Devil Axe

FE776 Devil Axe.png
Artwork of the Devil Axe from the Fire Emblem Trading Card Game.

A mighty but cursed axe known to harm its user.

Type

Axe

First game

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light

The Devil Axe (Japanese: デビルアクス Devil Axe) is a rare axe that was introduced in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. It is a high-risk, high-reward weapon: it has exceptionally high raw power compared to other axes, but it has a chance of backfiring and damaging its wielder instead of the target. If it backfires, the wielder suffers the same amount of damage that would have been dealt to the target had the attack not backfired.

The risk of having it backfire is mitigated by its wielder's luck stat, although there is always a minimum 1% chance that it will backfire no matter how high a unit's luck is. Additionally, in Echoes: Shadows of Valentia it heals its user when they defeat an enemy, although since axes are usable only by enemies in that game, this does not help the player.
