Close Ward Icon of the Close Ward skill in Heroes. If magic, staff, or dragonstone foe initiates combat, unit can counterattack regardless of foe's range, disables foe's skills that "calculate damage using the lower of foe's Def or Res," and grants Atk/Res+5 to unit during combat.

Close Ward (Japanese: 明鏡の反撃・近距離 Short-Range Mirror Counterattack) is a passive type A skill which debuted in Fire Emblem Heroes; Close Ward comes in only one tier. Contrary to what its name implies, Close Ward does not deal specifically with range-1 targets; Distant Ward boosts its wielder's Attack and Resistance during combat when a target wielding a red tome, blue tome, green tome, colorless tome, staff, or any color of breath skill initiates combat against its wielder, and also allows its wielder to counterattack regardless of its target's range and disable any of the target's skills that allow targeting of the lower of the user's Defense or Resistance.
