— Claude to Nemesis

Claude von Riegan (pronounced /'klɒd vɒn 'ɹigɪn/[key];Japanese: クロード=フォン=リーガン Claude von Riegan) is one of the three main characters, alongside Dimitri and Edelgard,[2] appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. He is the heir of the noble family that leads the Leicester Alliance and the leader of the Golden Deer house at the Officers Academy.

Biography

Claude was born the son of the king of Almyra and a noble from Leicester. As a child, he often found himself discriminated against due to his Fódlan heritage. When he left Almyra for Leicester, he was again discriminated against due to his Almyran heritage. This led him to develop a desire to end Fódlan's long-standing isolationism in an effort to bring about a new world where everyone accepts everyone else. He was named heir to House Riegen in Imperial Year 1179 and enrolled at the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery the following year along with several people from his kingdom. During a training exercise with Princess Edelgard von Hresvelg of Adrestia and Prince Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd of Faerghus, he was attacked by bandits hired by an individual calling themselves the Flame Emperor, but was rescued by the mercenaries Byleth and Jeralt. Byleth was offered a teaching position at the Academy as a reward, and their choice of which house to lead would have far-reaching consequences for all of Fódlan.

In all routes, Claude spends the next year studying at the Officer's Academy along with the Golden Deer. Eventually, the Flame Emperor is unmasked as Edelgard, and she assumes the Adrestian throne and declares war on the Church of Seiros in order to destroy the Crest system she believes is stagnating the world. Edelgard launches a full-scale invasion of Garreg Mach Monastery and Claude fights alongside the Church, but the monastery is overrun and Byleth goes missing. Afterwards, Claude returns to Leicester and officially becomes the leader of the Alliance, using his political acumen to maintain a veneer of neutrality and keep the Empire at bay.

Crimson Flower

If Byleth chooses to lead the Black Eagles and defects to Edelgard's side upon learning that she is the Flame Emperor, their return decisively tips the scale of the war in Adrestia's favor. Claude draws them to the Alliance capital of Derdriu intending to either kill Edelgard and win the war on the spot or remove Leicester from the conflict with a minimal amount of Alliance casualties. He is defeated, and may be executed or spared at the player's discretion. If spared, he wishes Edelgard luck before exiling himself in order to prevent the Alliance from continuing a pointless struggle in his name.

Silver Snow

If Byleth chooses to lead the Black Eagles and then chooses to stay with Rhea and the church and go against Edelgard, they will lead a resistance army to stop the Empire and rescue Rhea. Once the army receives troops from Judith at the Valley of Torment, she gives Byleth a letter from Claude. In the letter, he states that he "doesn't know exactly why, but he feels that he can trust them". He tells Byleth that in order to invade the Empire, they must go east and take the Great Bridge of Myrddin, with him distracting House Gloucester's troops so that the resistance army can pass through their territory along the way. By taking the bridge, House Gloucester won't be able to receive the Empire's aid, benefiting Claude's position in the war as well as giving the resistance army a foothold to invade the Empire. After the resistance army takes the bridge, the Alliance engages in a three-way battle with the Empire and the Kingdom at Gronder Field, resulting in massive casualties for the Alliance as well as Claude going missing. Some of the students believe that he is alive somewhere, and it can be deduced from the Verdant Wind route that the somewhere where he is alive would be in Almyra.

Azure Moon

If Byleth chooses to lead the Blue Lions, Claude grants them and Dimitri permission to move through Alliance territory in order to engage the Empire. Claude leads Alliance forces to Gronder Field to battle the Empire himself, and a misunderstanding draws him into a fight with the Kingdom as well; Dimitri emerges victorious, and Claude is forced to retreat. As Dimitri doubles back to retake the Kingdom capital of Fhirdiad, Adrestian forces under the command of Lord Arundel invade the Alliance. Claude lures them to Derdriu to make a last stand and sends a request to Dimitri petitioning for reinforcements. His faith in Dimitri is proven well-founded when Dimitri outflanks Arundel and crushes his forces in a pincer attack. Claude gives him his Heroes' Relic Failnaught and information about Archbishop Rhea's whereabouts, disbands the Alliance and places its territories under Dimitri's governance, and leaves to pursue his own goals.

Verdant Wind

If Byleth chooses to lead the Golden Deer, Claude and his classmates become their pupils. Claude accompanies Byleth directly throughout their time teaching at the Officer's Academy. Five years after the fall of Garreg Mach, Byleth returns the day before the millennium festival and reunites with Claude and the rest of the former Golden Deer. The two begin a full-scale war against Adrestia, using Garreg Mach Monastery as a base of operations. After killing an Adrestian general named Randolph tasked with retaking the monastery, Claude receives allies and supplies from Judith, the Hero of Daphnel, and launches a counterinvasion of the Empire. At Gronder Field, he engages both the Empire and the Kingdom in a three-way battle and emerges victorious; Dimitri is killed in the aftermath when he tries to pursue the fleeing Edelgard.

Claude presses forward into the Empire and takes Fort Merceus, but the fort is annihilated by "javelins of light" launched by a group known only as "those who slither in the dark". He invades the Imperial capital of Enbarr and successfully kills Edelgard, ending the war. Afterwards, Edelgard's retainer Hubert posthumously informs Claude of those who slither in the dark's intentions and the location of their base at Shambhala, an advanced underground city on the east coast of Fódlan on the border between Adrestia and Leicester. Claude besieges Shambhala and kills the leader of those who slither in the dark, Thales, but Thales manages to resurrect the ancient Liberation King Nemesis before dying. Nemesis raises an undead army and goes on a rampage towards Garreg Mach, but Claude and Byleth kill him and bring peace to Fódlan once and for all. In the aftermath, Claude leaves rulership of the newly formed United Kingdom of Fódlan to Byleth.

In all story routes that do not result in Claude's death, his final fate is to return to Almyra and take the throne as its king.

Claude, King of Unification
Claude returned to his homeland of Almyra and assumed the role of a politically active prince. After inheriting the throne, he worked to improve relations with Fódlan. In addition to establishing new trade routes, he fostered trust by sending reinforcements into Fódlan to help quell revolts by the remnants of the Imperial loyalists. Under his guidance, the peoples of Fódlan and Almyra were finally able to set aside age-old prejudices, and over time, the fallacies of old were all but forgotten.

Byleth, Ruler of Dawn & Claude, King of Unification
After ascending the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth sought to rebuild the war-torn towns and villages and to help guide the reformation of the Church of Seiros. After a few months of peace, remnants of the Imperial army joined with those who slither in the dark and marched upon the capital city of Derdriu. The new kingdom lacked the power to repel the invaders, but when defeat seemed imminent, a battle cry rang out from the east. Claude, the newly-crowned King of Almyra, led a mighty army that broke through the rebel forces with ease. This show of solidarity forever altered the course of history, heralding a new age of unity.

Claude, King of Unification & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose
Claude disappeared from Fódlan after the war, leaving the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz, to support the new United Kingdom of Fódlan in his stead. He proposed revolutionary polices to restore the war-torn region at a rapid rate. When the rebuilding effort was complete, Lorenz turned his eye toward diplomacy, seeking to establish treaties of friendship with foreign nations. Almyra was no exception, and when the two parties met for a summit at Fódlan's Locket, it was none other than Claude, the new king of Almyra, who arrived to negotiate. Some speculated that this meeting had been Claude's scheme all along, but Lorenz and Claude both denied it.

Claude, King of Unification & Lysithea, Scholar of Misfortune
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. When he became king, he asked Lysithea to be his queen with a heart full of love, and with the hope of fostering friendly diplomatic relations with Fódlan. Due to her shortened lifespan, Lysithea declined. Claude, unable to abandon his love for her, gave up the throne to go on a quest for a means to save her. Years later, he appeared suddenly before her, claiming to have found a cure. With her trust and love to guide him, he whisked her away, across the sea. It is unknown where they went.

Claude, King of Unification & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open trade routes with Fódlan, and entered into negotiations with Margrave Edmund. During this time, he was reunited with Marianne, who had grown under her adoptive father's guidance into a wise and talented woman. She offered him her aid, and as they worked together to secure friendly relations between their respective nations, they feel deeply in love.

Claude, King of Unification & Hilda, Free Spirit
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to take his place as heir to the throne. His family saw that he had grown strong and allowed him to claim his birthright. When he became king several years later, he made the surprise announcement that he would make Hilda his queen. Having studied with her brother to prepare for this moment, Hilda demonstrated an uncanny talent for diplomacy, and greatly contributed to establishing friendly relations between Fódlan and Almyra. The presence of a Fódlan-born queen for two consecutive generations did much to alter Almyran values.

Claude, King of Unification & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
Leonie returned to Sauin Village to repay her debts and mysteriously vanished afterwards. Some years later, when trade between Fódlan and Almyra began in earnest, the village received notice that the Almyran king would be passing through on his way to Garreg Mach. The village rushed to prepare themselves. When the anticipated day arrived, they were shocked to find Leonie at the king's side. She had gone to visit Claude in Almyra, and had ended up staying to become his queen. Faced with the sight of Leonie in the resplendent clothing of a monarch, her father and the other villagers could do nothing but stand in mute amazement.

Claude, King of Unification & Shamir, Distant Archer
After the war, Claude returned home to Almyra and took his place in the royal family. Some years later he became king, and during his reign, promoted policies to improve relations with Fódlan and protect children who had been left orphaned by the war. After he achieved his goals, he left the throne to a family member and left Almyra. During his travels, he encountered Shamir, who had been wandering the world as a mercenary. It is known that they traveled together from that day forward, but where they journeyed to remains a mystery.

Claude, King of Unification & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open diplomatic relations with Fódlan, and asked Garreg Mach for aid. During this time, he was reunited with Flayn, who had been helping Seteth run the church. She agreed to help, and as they worked together to secure friendly relations between their respective regions, they fell deeply in love. It is said that Seteth never learned of their relationship.

Claude, King of Unification & Petra, Queen of Brigid
Claude left Fódlan, entrusting its future to his friends. He intended to travel to his homeland of Almyra, but his love for Petra instead drew him west, to Brigid. He won her affection, and after receiving the blessing of her grandfather, the king of Brigid, the two were wed. Some years later, each inherited their respective thrones. As the monarchs of Brigid and Almyra, Petra and Claude fostered friendly diplomatic relations between the two regions and Fódlan.

Claude: Look at that, a real-life princess! I"ll have to be careful not to scar that little face of yours.
Edelgard: Careful, Claude. I'll win no matter what, but you're only making things harder for yourself.
Claude: Losing hasn't even crossed your mind, has it? Ooh, this'll be a bit of shock, then.
Edelgard: To shock was your intention to begin with, was it not?

— Claude, fighting Edelgard in Chapter 1.
Claude: Psst, Your Princeliness. You've got a thing for Edelgard, right? Come on, fess up. You'll feel better.
Dimitri: Claude, please. This is no time for idle banter. Your defenses are wide open.
Claude: That didn't get to him, huh? What a shame. I'll find a better way to ruffle him up next time.

— Claude, fighting Dimitri in Chapter 1.
Claude: Coming up with brilliant schemes, I can handle. No problem. But I'm not much for fighting. Go easy on me!
Byleth: ...
Claude: You know that was a joke, right? Jeez, not so much as a smile...

— Claude fighting Byleth as an enemy in Chapter 1.
Kostas: Spoiled little noble! Just die like a good little rich kid!
Claude: Being noble has nothing to do with who you are as a person or how hard your life is. Your logic is illogical!

— Claude fighting Kostas in Chapter 2.
This is a great chance for me to find out if the Sword of the Creator really is all that it's cracked up to be. On that note, you'd better not surrender too quickly!
— Claude fighting Byleth as an enemy in Chapter 7.
Claude: Hey, Princess! Heads up! There's a rat right by your Imperial feet...
Edelgard: BAH! I-- Huh. How dare you make a fool of me. You will not rile me with such childish tactics.
Claude: Ah, so the sheer terror in your eyes was...something else entirely. My mistake. Anyway, it was only a joke.
Edelgard: You really hope to unsettle me with childish jokes? It won't work. You must stand and fight!

— Claude, fighting Edelgard in Chapter 7.
Claude: Hey, Your Royalness! If you promise to let me have the prize, I'll let you take the honor of victory. Do we have a deal?
Dimitri: Enough of your foolishness! I— Wait a moment. You are trying to anger me, is that it?
Claude: Saw right through me, did you? Well, if there's no deal, I'll just have to win this thing fair and square!
Dimitri: I will happily face you, here and now. Do not hold back, Claude!

— Claude, fighting Dimitri in Chapter 7.
Claude: So, you're the fabled Flame Emperor? Go ahead and enlighten me. What are you planning to do with the Crest Stones? What did you use Flayn's blood for? Who's Kronya? Who's Solon?
Flame Emperor: Silence. There is no need for you to know.
Claude: Is it that mask that's to blame for your curtness? If so, maybe I should rip it off and ask again.

— Claude, fighting the Flame Emperor in Chapter 11.
Claude: Here she is—Her Majesty—looking pleased as a dog with a stick. What exactly happened to make you this way?
Edelgard: I'm simply seeing through a promise I made to myself a long time ago.
Claude: Isn't this much force excessive? Thanks to you, my own long-held ambitions are nearly destroyed.
Edelgard: If you don't want them to be destroyed completely, I suggest you turn tail and flee.

— Claude, fighting Edelgard in Chapter 12.
Heh... So sad that our reunion should take place on the battlefield.
— Claude, as a boss when in Crimson Flower Chapter 14.
Teach... You should have chosen me instead of Edelgard. No point in whining about it now, I suppose. Sorry, but I'll be taking the win today.
— Claude, as a boss when fighting against Byleth in Crimson Flower Chapter 14.
Claude: We haven't seen each other since Garreg Mach. You've grown lovelier than ever, Edelgard.
Edelgard: You're not so unfortunate yourself. And as usual, you're here at a most inopportune moment.
Claude: Well, I'm sure we have much to talk about... But how about we settle things first?
Edelgard: No objections here. Prepare yourself, Claude.

— Claude, as a boss when fighting against Edelgard in Crimson Flower Chapter 14.
Acheron: The declining Alliance will be finished if I kill you. The Empire will herald the new age!
Claude: Only if you manage to kill me. Hm? What's that to the north? Looks like the home of another opportunistic noble is burning...
Acheron: That's...that's my castle! NO!
Claude: That's the declining Alliance at work, right there. Seems like you were facing the wrong way, Weathervane!

— Claude, fighting Acheron in Verdant Wind Chapter 16.
Claude: Aren't you gonna stand aside, Lorenz? Unless we win, the Alliance can't survive.
Lorenz: Even if that's so, to allow you past without a fight would be pure cowardice, I'm afraid.
Claude: You are one stubborn guy.

— Unused dialogue between Claude and an enemy Lorenz in Verdant Wind Chapter 16.
So, you're actually alive, Teach! It's a shame you aren't on our side. Anyway, isn't the Empire your enemy? Us fighting seems like a waste...
— Claude, as an enemy fighting Byleth in Azure Moon Chapter 17.
Claude: Calm down, Dimitri! What does it achieve, us killing each other here?
Dimitri: Move, Claude. I have no time to exchange words with you.
Claude: It doesn't matter what I'm saying, does it? You aren't even listening. But I'm not gonna budge.

— Claude, fighting Dimitri in Azure Moon/Verdant Wind Chapter 17.
Claude: We haven't seen each other since Garreg Mach. You've grown lovelier than ever, Edelgard.
Edelgard: You're not so unfortunate yourself. And you have the aid of the professor. Frankly, I'm jealous. Now's the chance for you and the professor to leave.
Claude: I'm afraid I must decline. Even if we left, we'd just have to come right back.

— Claude, fighting Edelgard in Verdant Wind Chapter 17.
So sad that our reunion should take place on the battlefield.
— Claude, as a boss in Azure Moon Chapter 17.
Claude: Hey, how long's it been? Five years? Who'd have thought you'd end up an Imperial general...
Death Knight: So, you wish to die.
Claude: Heh. As antisocial and unhinged as ever, I see.

— Claude, fighting the Death Knight in Verdant Wind Chapter 18.
Claude: It's over, lapdog. Your military rule is at its end.
Hubert: For every step you take along that path, our thorns will cut into your heels.
Claude: Ooh, that sounds painful. I'll have to wear thicker soles for the march.
Hubert: If your boots are too heavy, you won't be able to lift your feet. But enough prattle.

— Claude, fighting Hubert in Verdant Wind Chapter 19.
Edelgard: Your ideals, I understand they're not so far removed from my own. But without sufficient knowledge of this land's suffering, I can't entrust Fódlan to you!
Claude: Perhaps. I daresay it's true that I don't fully understand the history of Fódlan. Still, I've seen many things in my life. Don't worry. I'll finish the job for you.

— Claude, fighting Edelgard in Verdant Wind Chapter 20.
Thales: Ha. It is laughable that base animals such as you would bare fangs at the likes of us.
Claude: I may be a base animal, but I have strong allies. Do you think you can beat Teach and the Sword of the Creator?
Thales: The Sword of the Creator... The blade given to Nemesis. Who do you really think is superior?
Claude: There's a big difference between the living and the dead. The fate of the future lies in the hands of the living!

— Claude, fighting Thales, in Verdant Wind Chapter 21.
Claude: Hey... Can you speak?
Riegan: ...
Claude: Just puppets controlled by Nemesis... Well, they're the strongest puppets I've ever known.

— Claude, fighting Riegan in Verdant Wind Chapter 22.
Claude: I did hear that some good-for-nothing inherited this territory. I guess that's you, then.
Acheron: Who do you think you are? I'm not a good-for-nothing! You are!
Claude: If you were actually good for anything at all, I'd at least expect you to recognize who I am...

— Claude, fighting Acheron in Land of the Golden Deer.
Claude: How could you commit such crimes in the name of Almyra? It's because of two-bit miscreants like you that Almyrans suffer so much hate!
Bandit Leader: Sh-shut up! Say what you will, we're the real navy of Almyra!

— Claude, fighting the Bandit Leader in Sword and Shield of Seiros.
The Wind Caller: I smell those detestable 10 Elites... Who are you?
Claude: I'm the grandson of the grandson of the grandson of the elite Riegan. Now tell me who you are!
The Wind Caller: I am your family's enemy. If you carry the blood of the 10 Elites, you cannot be permitted to live.
Claude: What do you mean by that? And what's that Crest on your forehead?
The Wind Caller: No more talk. If you wish to survive, you must destroy me!

— Claude, fighting the Wind Caller in The Sleeping Sand Legend.
Claude: That looks just like Miklan's Black Beast... Could a Hero's Relic be at fault?
Wandering Beast: Hero... There is a word that takes me back.
Claude: Takes you back? You... Are you...
Wandering Beast: After so long, I cannot speak of it.

— Claude, fighting the Wandering Beast in Forgotten Hero.

Fire Emblem Cipher

Claude is currently featured on six cards in Fire Emblem Cipher. These cards and other Japanese Cipher parlance denote his name as (クロード(フォドラ) Claude (Fódlan)) in order to differentiate him from Claud, who character-wise is identically-named in Japanese. English-language fandom parlance is divided on whether or not it has need to make such a distinction for themselves, along the lines on whether they prioritize the latter character's official Nintendo of Japan romanization (Claud) or fan translation patches (Claude), with the latter group needing methods to keep the two distinct while the former group having no need to make distinction between the names. As this wiki's stance on the Genealogy character lies on his Nintendo of Japan romanization, this wiki has no need to make usage of any distinction methods, and thus this character's name will be listed as simply "Claude" in the below table.

Five of the below cards' epithets are still in raw, untranslated Japanese; these need translation.
