Class change/Family Computer games

From Fire Emblem Wiki, your source on Fire Emblem information. By fans, for fans.

This sub-page covers the class change stats for the two Family Computer games: Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and Fire Emblem Gaiden.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light

In Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, class change is achieved through the use of items specific to each class. Compared to later installments, only eleven classes—six base and five advanced—are connected into class change trees, with the vast majority—including the Lord—incapable of promotion at all.

All stat increases when changing class are based on the promoted class's base stats. If a unit's given stat prior to promotion is lower than the promoted class's base stat in the same, the stat is increased to the promoted class's base stat. If a unit's current stat is higher than or equal to the promoted base stat, the stat is unmodified.

Fire Emblem Gaiden

Alm visits a Mila Shrine, the only occasions where class changing can be achieved.

In Gaiden, class changing is achieved by visiting any Mila Shrine. By interacting with the statue in the center of a shrine, the player is prompted to to promote each unit capable of promoting, one at the time. Each class has a set threshold level for class changing; once they reach this, the player is notified that the unit can change class. Gaiden is the first game to feature a trainee class (the Villager) and third-tier advanced classes.

Alm and Celica both promote in events: Celica promotes to Princess by talking to a woman in Grieth's Fort after clearing it in Act 3, and Alm promotes to Hero when Celica talks to Halcyon in the Sage's Hamlet in Act 4. While Celica's initial class, Priestess, is not exclusive to her, no other Priestesses can promote to Princess. When promoting a Villager, the player is randomly offered a class to promote it to; if the option is not to the player's wishes, they may cancel and try again to get a different offered class. When a Dread Fighter promotes to Villager, they can promote again to any of the five options available to the Villager as usual, looping the process of the class change tree from the beginning.

Most stat increases when changing class are based on the promoted class's base stats. If a unit's HP, strength, skill, speed, or luck prior to promotion is lower than the promoted class's base stat, the stat is increased by to the promoted class's base stat. If a unit's current stat is higher than or equal to the promoted base stat, the stat is unmodified; if every stat is higher than the promoted base stat, the unit receives +1 maximum HP (except for Celica, who does not receive the bonus).[1] A unit's movement is changed to the promoted class's movement, even if this would decrease the stat, and a unit's resistance is unchanged (unless promoting to or from Dread Fighter).
