Class change/Game Boy Advance games

From Fire Emblem Wiki, your source on Fire Emblem information. By fans, for fans.

This sub-page covers the class change stats for the three Game Boy Advance games: Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, and Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

The Binding Blade restored the use of multiple class change items, each associated with multiple classes, as opposed to the single class change item of Thracia; most of these items are either returning from or based on the earlier class change items of Mystery of the Emblem. Compared to its predecessors, like most other facets of the game, the range of classes available is smaller and simplified. For the first time in the series, HP increases by a preset value when changing class, as opposed to not at all (as in Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776) or increasing only to match the class's base HP stat (as in the first three games).

When a unit changes class, they exchange the bases of their former class for those of their new one; the bonuses shown on promotion are the differences between their new class's stats and their former's. For example, changing from Fighter into Warrior will increase a unit's HP by 8, as Fighter's base HP is 20 and Warrior's is 28.

Roy changes class only in a story event at the end of Chapter 21. Weapon level changes are described in terms of weapon experience. In The Binding Blade, 50 weapon experience is equal to 1 weapon level.

Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

The class change system of The Binding Blade remains largely unchanged in The Blazing Blade. The biggest difference is that class changing can now be done from the preparations screen, as The Blazing Blade introduced the ability to use items from this menu. The Blazing Blade also introduced the Earth Seal, a secondary class change item option for almost every class in the vein of the Knight Proof of Thracia 776.

Technically, all three Lord characters—Eliwood, Hector, and Lyn—promote using Heaven Seals. However, the main Lord of the story mode (Eliwood in Eliwood's Tale, Hector in Hector's Tale) in question is unable to use either of the two Heaven Seals obtained through the course of the game, instead doing so in the closing event of Chapter 27E/29H (though this story event ostensibly involves a Heaven Seal). Similarly, Merlinus will automatically change class in battle preparations after reaching Level 20.

Weapon level changes are described in terms of weapon experience.

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

The class change system of The Sacred Stones remains mostly the same as in The Blazing Blade, with the addition of branched class change trees, giving every class save the Lord two class options to promote to, which are actively chosen between by the player at the time of promotion. As with The Blazing Blade, in addition to the individual class change items, there is also a secondary unified class change item which works on all classes except the Lord: the Master Seal.

Eirika and Ephraim promote with the use of items specific to each, the Lunar Brace and Solar Brace. Both are received at the end of Chapter 16, as part of an event; this event gives the player the option of automatically promoting them then and there, or declining and instead receiving their class change item to manually use later.

For stats other than constitution and movement, promotion gains are determined by the class being promoted into; consequently even if multiple unpromoted classes can promote into the same promoted class, such as with Fighter or Pirate into Warrior, the promotion gains will be the same, regardless of which class the unit promoted from. However, constitution and movement changes are the differences between pre-promotion and post-promotion classes. Additionally, it should be noted that male and female versions of the same class are treated as different classes, hence the different promotion gains for Wyvern Knight, as there is no male Pegasus Knight and no recruitable female Wyvern Rider.

Weapon level changes are described in terms of weapon experience.

Trainee classes

The Sacred Stones houses the most robust incarnation of the trainee classes system. In it, there are three trainee classes—Journeyman, Recruit, and Pupil—which have a branching set of three class change options. The maximum level for trainee classes is 10, instead of the usual 20; once that level cap has been reached, the trainee will automatically and unavoidably promote at the beginning of the battle preparations screen of the next chapter/skirmish undertaken, with the player freely choosing the promoted class option as usual.

The first tier "super trainee" classes—each denoted with a (2)—only become available in all playthroughs after the game has been completed both in Eirika and Ephraim's story modes at least once each.

Super trainees

If the player chooses to promote a basic trainee to their respective basic "super trainee" (herein "Trainee (2)"), from there they act as a normal basic unit with a level cap of 20, and in terms of how they promote again: through the use of a class change item at level 10 or above. Every Trainee (2) gets two promotion options: a single normal advanced class connected to their base trainee class's promotion options, plus the option to promote again to another super trainee variation of themselves (herein "Trainee (3)"). As a Trainee (3), they act like a normal advanced class and cannot promote again.

Accessing super trainees of any description only becomes available upon completion of the game twice, once each with both Eirika and Ephraim.
