Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade

Role

Clarine is the second child of Pent and Louise, the counts of Reglay. As most ladies of Etruria, she has lived secluded and surrounded by all kinds of luxuries. However, previous to the games' events, she left the family mansion to visit her brother, Klein, who is the current Archery General of their country and whom she greatly admires.

While searching in Lycia, she is captured by Erik, the marquess of Laus, who claims to be able of reuniting her with Klein. His real motive, though, is to offer her as a gift to Narcian, one of the Wyvern Generals of Bern. When presented to Narcian, she mocks him, barely keeping her life thanks to the unexpected invasion of Roy's army. Erik locks her up, so that Narcian can use her later, but Rutger, a mercenary hired by Erik, sets her free and makes her leave the castle amidst the confusion.

Suddenly, Clarine finds herself in the middle of a battle and decides to join Roy's side to stay out of danger. When Rutger appears on the battlefield, she rides towards him and angrily berates him for not treating royalty correctly; her remark about fighting against Bern makes him to defect to Roy's side as well. After the battle, she remains in the army for the rest of the war.

Some time after, when the Lycian Army is fighting bandits in the Western Isles, she finally meets her brother and convinces him to not attack the Lycian Army and to join their cause, confessing how mortifying the Etrurian nobles' behavior towards the islands is.

After Bern is defeated and the war is over, she returns home and carries on with her normal life, gaining the admiration of her peers with her kindness and charm.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Clarine is the first Troubadour you get in The Binding Blade. Because of this, along with being your second healer, she is an invaluable unit in the early game. Thanks to her mount, she has high movement at base, particularly useful thanks to the large maps in the game. She also has a low Constitution, which gives her a very high Aid, allowing her to rescue most player units, and the ability to be rescued by most characters. Her low constitution might seem like a flaw after promotion, but anima magic in The Binding Blade has such low weight that the only tomes she loses weight on are Bolting and the trial-map exclusive Fimbulvetr. This is also without mentioning Clarine's high availability, and her being the only unit with both mounted and healing utility for a large part of the game. Her competition is Saul and Elen, who both lack a mount.

However, she comes with fairly low bases in every area, besides luck, speed, and resistance, and has a mediocre magic growth and poor HP and defense growths. Because of this, Clarine mostly relies on dodging, as she can often be one-shot by physical attacks, and takes a lot of damage from magic-using enemies. Luckily, thanks to the low accuracy of most enemies in The Binding Blade, Clarine can dodge consistently if given a few levels or a support partner, Klein and Rutger being notable examples, but the player should not rely on her dodge-tanking much as she can get one shot easily, and with the low experience gain of staves she will often be underleveled.

Clarine comes with a low staff of D, which allows her to only use Mend and the Heal staff at base, and she will have a hard time building up her staff rank quickly. Once she is promoted to Valkyrie, she can deal chip damage with anima magic. However, she starts with an E rank of anima magic and she is not a good user of higher rank staves thanks to her aforementioned low magic.

Overall, Clarine is a solid unit that is invaluable in the early game and offers great utility throughout the game. However, she faces competition as the game goes on from other staff users with better magic, better staff ranks, or better combat.

Comparison with Cecilia

Once promoted, Clarine becomes the same class as Cecilia. Statistically, Clarine has better speed and luck, while Cecelia has better magic and defensive stats. More importantly, Clarine starts with an E rank in anima, which gives Cecilia an advantage in offense due to her ability to wield stronger tomes. Cecilia's greatest advantage however is that she does not need a Guiding Ring, and while Clarine can be used without needing a promotion, Cecilia will then be significantly better due to higher movement and the ability to attack.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Role

Clarine is one of the characters available to be summoned by players from the game's initial launch. Only one variation of Clarine is currently available in Heroes, based on her The Binding Blade incarnation.

Personality

Clarine is a self-centered and arrogant girl who is often rude to others, although she does have good intentions. She usually looks down on people due to their social status, and takes great pride in her Etrurian heritage, remarking that Lance is not as good as Etrurian knights are. She also seems to romanticize the concept of gentlemen and knighthood, asking either Lance or Rutger to take care of her at all costs,[3] and even authorizing the Pheraen cavalier to kiss her hand.[4]

Despite her mean appearance, Clarine does have a kind side, shown in her support conversations with Rutger and Dorothy. She takes the timid archer under her protection and tries to make her a true lady, helping Dorothy with her self-esteem issues and becoming good friends in the process,[5] while with Rutger, she recognizes some of her mistakes with her treatment of the swordsman and apologizes to him. While growing up, she heard many stories about Dieck, the mercenary who saved Klein's life. She is really happy to have met him at last, as she always considered him an important person.

She greatly admires her older brother, Klein, and strives to become a source of pride for him. Her need for his approval is so big that she is willing to do anything, even to mistreat others. Eventually, he calls her out on it, stating that she is still a child.[6]

Clarine takes great pride in her appearance; despite being in the middle of a war, she suggests Dorothy to wash her hair three times a day.[7] When reminiscing about her childhood with her brother, she mentions how one of her goals was to be the most elegant lady in Etruria. Yet, some time after joining Roy's army, she states that she does not want to go back to the mansion, even though she wants to see her parents.[8] According to her she would have to live a boring life. By then, she has grown up enough to desire a more interesting life than just decorating herself.[9] This shows that she has grown up as not just a snobbish girl but a quite introspective lady.

Clarine: Refined Noble

Today, I'll be introducing you to the young lady of House Reglay of Etruria… It's Clarine! She's as strong-willed as she is charming. At one point, Clarine left home to see her brother Klein, whom she admires. But during her travels, she was deceived by a villain who then kidnapped her, hoping to make her into a gift to the Kingdom of Bern. Things looked dire, but as luck would have it, she was freed by the swordsman Rutger. Having escaped with her life, Clarine took shelter with Roy's army and joined the fight against Bern. During the war, she used the power of healing staves to help her fellow members of the Lycian League. Seeing her stand with them, proud and radiant, her fellow soldiers' hearts swelled with courage!

  4. "Clarine: Even if you are not mine to order... Are we not a lady and knight?

  5. "Clarine: Listen to me. A fine lady must have confidence in herself. No matter how you dress, without faith in yourself, it is completely and utterly without meaning. Do not devalue yourself so. Do you understand?
    Dorothy: Y-yeah, I think.
Clarine: Have confidence in yourself! With me as your teacher, you will be the finest of ladies!
    Dorothy: ...Thank you, Lady Clarine...
Clarine: ...One additional matter... We are friends now, are we not?
    Dorothy: Eh?

  8. "Clarine: I...I don't want to go back to the manse after the war...
Klein: Why not? Mother and Father anxiously await our return.

  9. "Clarine: But if I return to the manse, I will be nothing but a doll once more. Never again to see the outside world, concerned only with decorating myself...
Klein: Well, that is how most Etrurian ladies are.
Clarine: Yes, I know... But being the most elegant in Etruria does not seem as appealing as it once did.
Klein: That's because you're growing and maturing, Clarine. If you stay at the manse, you could live your life without any worries.
