Choose Your Legends
“ | Make your choice! Choose legendary Heroes from the entire history of the Fire Emblem series. | ” | — Headline of the official website's about section |
---|
Choose Your Legends (Japanese: 英雄総選挙 Heroes General Election) is the name of a popularity polling event associated with Fire Emblem Heroes. The first Choose Your Legends poll was run in 2017, and has been conducted each year since.
Overview
In the weeks prior to Fire Emblem Heroes's release, specifically Wednesday, January 18th to Tuesday, 31st January 2017, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems held a voting campaign known as Choose Your Legends. Visitors to the campaign's site were allowed to vote for their favorite characters, with the two highest-polling characters of each gender being selected to receive special playable versions of themselves wearing unique outfits. The development of these special outfits was shared through official Nintendo channels. The top ten ranked characters of each gender also featured in a series of 2017 calendar images, which were be released each month throughout 2017.
The candidates for voting included every playable character in the entire series, as well as significant bosses and non-player characters. Characters who appear in multiple games were also counted separately. Visitors could submit one vote per day, and voting with a My Nintendo account also awarded them 200 platinum points for the My Nintendo service.
Near the first anniversary of Fire Emblem Heroes, on January 19, 2018, a second Choose Your Legends event was announced. Fire Emblem Gaiden characters had their images updated to their Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia appearances and all characters original to Heroes were added to the voting pool, while the four winners of the original Choose Your Legends event have been entirely removed (including the Radiant Dawn version of Ike and "Masked Marth", even though it was the Path of Radiance Ike and regular Lucina which won).
On January 21, 2019, the third Choose Your Legends event began, running until January 28. Like before, the winners of the previous two rounds were removed from the voting pool, while the characters who appear in Book III of Heroes were added. In addition, for this round, certain characters who appear across multiple titles would have their votes tallied together for the final results.
On January 22, 2020, the fourth Choose Your Legends event began, running until January 29, working much in a similar fashion to the third event. For this round, characters appearing in Book IV of Heroes, Three Houses, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore were added; the Three Houses selection was unusually split between Part I and Part II incarnations (while tallying their votes together for the final results), while Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore was treated as if it were the only release of Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE making no mention of its original Wii U version.
On January 22, 2021, the fifth Choose Your Legends event began, running until January 29, working much in a similar fashion to the fourth event. For this round, three characters appearing in Book V of Heroes plus Book IV character Mirabilis, as well Three Houses's Ashen Wolves house, were added; Mirabilis and the Ashen Wolves were not introduced in their original games until after the fourth event had ended. One Book V Heroes original, Eitri, did not appear in the poll despite having already debuted prior to the event, suggesting the poll roster was finalized prior to the Forest of the Sage update wherein Eitri debuted.
The sixth Choose Your Legends event began on January 20, 2022, running until January 27, and would be run in a manner similar manner to the previous events. In addition to the remaining characters featured in Heroes Book V, Book VI's Ash, Elm, and Letizia as well as Nifl, Múspell, and Thórr would be the most notable new additions to the poll.
Voting
There are two ways to choose a vote. One may choose the random button to randomly select any character from the ballot or search for a character by game. When viewing characters by game they are sorted alphabetically.
A voter may vote once per day, and if they have a My Nintendo account they can track their previous votes on their Battle Ballot page. Users without a My Nintendo account cannot view their previous votes. If a day of voting is missed the voter cannot "make up" their missed vote, so they become limited to one less overall vote; if there are seven days of voting and the first day is missed one can only vote six times if they make sure to vote every subsequent day.
One voter can vote for the same character multiple times, or they can choose to vote for a variety of characters.

2017 overall results
The overall results were revealed on February 9th, 2017.[2] The highest rankings remained largely unchanged from the midterm results, with Ike and Roy topping the male poll, and Lyn and Lucina topping the female poll. As a show of gratitude for the large number of votes cast, it was announced that in addition to the poll winners, as was originally announced, the second-place male and female characters would also receive special costumes, while the top ten characters of each gender would receive special calendar images.
A later interview with staff from Intelligent Systems revealed that they were highly surprised by Lyn's performance in the poll; they fully expected Lucina to win. They also stated that they were surprised by the overall high performance of characters from the GBA games. As a result, development of the Choose Your Legends character variants took longer than anticipated.[3]
The Choose Your Legend's version of Lucina's lance, Geirskögul, has Ancient Letters inscribed on it, that, when translated using the cipher provided in The Art of Fire Emblem Awakening, state "animeprojectsubcess". The phrase is typically interpreted as "anime project success" though it is unclear what this implies.

Winners' variants
The variant units for the four winners were released around Heroes's six-month anniversary on August 31, 2017. These variants were revealed in a Feh Channel concerning Choose Your Legends on August 28, 2017.
The variants appear to have been mostly themed around each character's father's classes and weapons. The characters were initially released in the New Heroes: Brave Heroes summoning event, and were added to the general summoning poll afterwards, meaning it is possible to summon them at any time if luck permits. Their initial release introduced a summoning event where the player can make their free pick of one of the four variants; this free pick banner remains even with the introduction of the second free pick banner for Choose Your Legends 2.

Ike: Brave Mercenary |
Lucina: Brave Princess |

2018 overall results
The final results of the second event were posted on February 1, 2018. Like the previous poll, the highest rankings were largely unchanged. Hector and Ephraim remained in the top two spots respectively for the men's division, and while Celica remained in the first place spot of the women's division, Veronica received enough votes to push her up to second place from fifth.
Winners' variants
Like 2017's running, the variant units for the four winners were released in late August. These variants were revealed in a Feh Channel concerning Choose Your Legends on August 20, 2018.
The themeing of the variants is slightly more varied than 2017's. Ephraim is based on his Father Fado, Hector is based on his elder brother Uther, and Veronica is based on her elder brother Bruno; Celica is the exception to the themeing and is instead based on her Gaiden Priestess design.
The characters were initially released in the New Heroes: Arrival of the Brave summoning event, and were added to the general summoning pool afterwards, meaning it is possible to summon them at any time if luck permits. Additionally, like the 2017 batch of variants, the player may select one hero of their choice for free any time after August 21st.

There was no change from the midterm results concerning the positions on who would get the Choose Your Legends-based variants; the highest position to see a change from midterm was sixth in the women's bracket, where Plumeria jumped over Dorothea and Marianne, while the highest position to change from midterm in the men's bracket was seventh, where Byleth overtook Robin.
Another notable performance came from Jorge, who jumped up to twelfth in the men's bracket from outside the top twenty at midterm; perhaps in recognition of this performance, Jorge had a normal variation added to the game alongside the Choose Your Legends-based variants to be distributed via a Grand Hero Battle.

Trivia
- A Nintendo of America tweet for the 2017 running of the event mistakenly refers to it as "Choose your Heroes".[4]
- Jedah was excluded from the eligible voting list of characters in the 2017 Choose Your Legends poll, despite other major antagonists from Fire Emblem Gaiden, like Rudolf, Desaix, and Grieth, being present. The reason behind Jedah's exclusion is unknown; though he was added to the ballot for Choose Your Legends: Round 2.
- Despite being major bosses with legendary weapons, both Bryce of Path of Radiance and Levail of Radiant Dawn were absent from the poll until 2021.
- Despite being added as a playable character in Heroes in 2019, Altina could not be voted for in the 2020 running of Choose Your Legends; she joined the poll in 2021. She is the only playable Heroes character to hold this distinction.
- Despite being called "Thea" in Shanna's dialogue in Fire Emblem Heroes, the 2018 poll still called her "Thite". Her name was corrected to "Thea" for the 2019 poll.
- Tharja (4th in 2017), Marth (4th in 2020), and Chrom (3rd in 2021) placed in the top 4 overall in their respective polls, but because of the rules of the poll stipulating that the top two characters of each gender would receive Brave variants, all were passed over for Brave variants in favor of characters with fewer votes (Roy in 2017, Lysithea in 2020, and Marianne and Eirika in 2021).
- Edelgard is the only character to be featured in a poll after already winning a Brave variant, due to her Flame Emperor identity being considered a separate character; however, she was removed from the poll in 2022.
- The rules on multiple-character vote pooling state that the title that garnered the most votes for that character would gain the Choose Your Legends variation; however, this rule appears to not have been followed upon for Marth, as his Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light incarnation was shown to have garnered more votes than his Mystery of the Emblem incarnation in both the midterm and final results announcements of the 2021 voting event, yet his Brave variant was based on the latter incarnation and the 2022 voting site makes a statement contradicting the 2021 final results announcement in stating that the latter incarnation, not the former, was a winner of that event.
